Oh thanks for that, @vera99 I'll look into it a bit more

Kissingfrogs25 · 21/10/2022 21:14

I have heard Boris has now reached a 100 backers.
Penny has stalled.
Its a done deal once the vote arrives with con party.
You may not agree with this outcome, but he has a massive mandate to lead. Sunak has none.
Soon you can vote and decide.

Not according to the Guido Fawke's spreadsheet

There's something oddly reassuringly about a spreadsheet

HRTQueen · 21/10/2022 21:21

I think the reason MP’s are backing Johnson is that they believe if anyone can win an election now he can

I don’t think he will but I’m certain he will pull back some voters.

if he wins he will work on the mandate that he has to finish what he started he is responsible there will be no election called and lots of apologies

Meant to say - I think a GE is crucial. Up here there is huge demand for a GE and Scottish independence is getting a boost in support thanks to the Tories.

I don't want a GE I want the Tories and their voters to own this whole sorry mess. It's only going to get worse come winter and the Tory wrecking ball has too much momentum to be deflected. There will be crisis in the NHS, strikes all over, continued Brexit shitshow fall out, and people dying from cold and hunger. Even if Labour got in tomorrow, they couldn't turn this around, it would all be happening under Labour and the Daily Mail and Express would have headlines every day blaming them and their fucking stupid readers would believe it.

Some Tory MPs and members would have also made this calculation and will have worked out they can blame Labour for everything and Tory voters are stupid enough to believe them.

Ha yeh there is, especially against the madness. I also like the bar chart.

Not sure why some names are bold

MarshaBradyo · 21/10/2022 21:29

I don't want a GE

I don’t blame Labour if they don’t want a GE pre winter.

Best bet is Sunak gets it and tries to sort out stuff first. If Labour get it there’s going to be a line of various parts of society expecting more money, and there won’t be any.

LeMoo · 21/10/2022 21:35

I bet Keir Starmer has a spreadsheet

MrsLargeEmbodied · 22/10/2022 08:18

does mumsnet have any party members?

GreatHonkingPudding · 22/10/2022 08:55

Either way this is the end of the Conservative Party, isn't it? They haven't been "conservative" since Brexit.

Their policies are so mad that the people attracted by said policies to join/stay party members can't be trusted to choose their leader.. and their MPs aren't much better.

Their two best choices to get us through the economic crisis they have created appear to be the guy they just got rid of six weeks ago who took a lot of of holidays, had a lot of parties, had babies, got married, wrote a book, had an extensive dressing up box, had no scruples about using another country's misfortunes as political cover, didn't bother reading what was in his red box or going to COBRA meetings about one of the biggest threats the world has ever known, that ordinary people on Mumsnet watched coming for months and lied to everybody, all the time, every day.

Or the guy who cost the country billions by not doing his job properly when he was in charge of the economy before.

Nothing says "we're the party to see you through this economic crisis" like being the party who caused this economic crisis.

Saying, "we've been in charge for 12 years and the economy's now in such a mess we're going to make public services even worse, but it's not our fault" isn't much of a vote winner is it?

They're finished.

They won't even be "the opposition" next time.

Now it's just a case of how much lower they drag our country before we get rid of them.

Alexandra2001 · 22/10/2022 09:05

Plenty will vote for them, the polling is terrible atm but there isn't going to be a GE anytime soon.

The Tory plan will be to blame the nations ills on the previous Govt..... that Boris is heading up a "new" government... & the right wing media will back this 110%.

They've 2 years to get this narrative in peoples minds, a lot will depend on the war in Ukraine.... if or when that ends, a lot of the worlds economic woes will go too, oh and you can bet Bojo will try to claim credit for that too (should it happen)

Abhannmor · 22/10/2022 09:34

@GreatHonkingPudding Arguably haven't been Conservative since the Budget of 1981 started to smash up the Post War Settlement.

I remember reading an article back then saying basically ' Thatcher is not a Tory ; she is a Whig"

But I didn't really get it tbh. As a yoof I didn't know much about Whigs!

But now it makes more sense. In bad times Tories make noises about One Nation. But it never results in anything concrete. They go back to free market madness like a dog returning to its vomit.
There's no place I'm the party for eg Rory Stewart.

Ted Heath was the last One Nation leader. A lifetime ago now. Under PR they would probably be 2 parties?

vera99 · 22/10/2022 10:03

This is the Tories now dancing around their own grave - hope it's not our country as well.

Croque · 22/10/2022 10:31

"When I grow up, I want to be Winston Churchill"
"When I grow up, I want to be Margaret Thatcher"

But they never did grow up. The End. 😀

HRTQueen · 22/10/2022 10:37

I agree with you Alexandra2001

I would prefer Sunak to win as feel it will be better for the country but think it maybe Johnson as he has a way with voters (party before country)

Abhannmor · 22/10/2022 10:46

If Johnson gets in he'll take a quick look at the Red Boxes of Doom , shout 'Boo-ooring!' and then ? Offski to a bomb shelter in Kiev with his helmet , flak jacket and camera crew.....

nightvision · 22/10/2022 11:19

If Sunak wins (which is unlikely) he'd be out of the door again long before the next GE is due.

Nobody forgets and/or forgives a back-stabber!

Newcatbrowntail · 22/10/2022 11:23

Is Sunak a backstabber? Or someone who couldn’t take the dishonesty any longer

I don't get all the Sunak being a backstabber. Wasn't Sajid Javid at the front of the queue, Sunak and many others followed behind him.

Even if he was first in the queue so what, lots of troubles in the world could have been avoided if someone had followed their conscience and said, "No" very clearly to despicable leaders.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 22/10/2022 11:29

i am confident it will be rishi who wins

Croque · 22/10/2022 11:30

This contest is merely likely to delay a GE by a very short amount of time.

If Boris wins, there will be non acceptance and a GE. They will not even let him stay for 44 days.
Ditto Sunak, the knives are already sharpened. He could even make it to 2024 (but not beyond).
There is enough material out there on both to ensure their death warrants.

It would have been the braver/popular choice to call the GE upfront.

Without proportional representation, things cannot resolve themselves in any meaningful sense.

The mad members attracted by the mad policies want bad Boris. How long can a party survive without members?
