Joe Armitage
A Conservative MP in a relatively marginal seat told me his Conservative association members have already started sending very strongly worded emails demanding he back Johnson or they’ll no longer support him. I imagine this will be a huge driver over the weekend.

pigcon1 · 21/10/2022 03:37

It doesn’t surprise me but talk about shooting your self in both feet.

Have people really got such short memories? He was useless at the job! It doesn't say much for the rest of the party that the only thing they can think to do is bring back the last person who fecked up the job! It simply wouldn't happen in any well functioning organisation.

Give us a General Election.

👏👏👏👏

Does anyone else feel like they’re in a speeding car and the driver got kicked out by the passengers for being drunk and then one of the passengers volunteered to drive but crashed the car a second later and now the drunk driver is trying to smash through the window to get back into the driving seat?

I think this is as good an analysis of the situation as I have read.

For all you pathetic Sunak lovers who think you have found in your moment of despair a saviour, I say, don't delude yourselves. If you think a smiling and scheming multi-millionaire back-stabber have your interest at heart, then you really got to go back to school to learn how to be a better judge of character.

One who secretly held an American Green Card - until rudely exposed - and whose super-rich wife avoided paying UK tax (so as to further expand their wealth) would be the last person on earth to convince me how much concern he has for me and my country.

HRTQueen · 21/10/2022 06:49

I’m not sure there are any Sunak lovers on this thread nightvision

Iamnotthe1 · 21/10/2022 06:54

This has all been so ridiculous that the cynic in me would believe that this whole thing has been a plot to refresh Johnson in the eyes of the public:

  1. He's forced to resign from office after presiding over one if the most corrupt and scandal-filled governments in our history, with him as a key reason for this corruption.
  1. His replacement is someone who was/is/still remains a vocal supporter of him and his leadership of the party.
  1. She does the unthinkable and actually manages to make every single wrong decision possible, frustrating, terrifying and angering the country, almost as if she was doing it on purpose.
  1. She resigns after a tiny amount of time.
  1. Johnson can throw his hat back in, all his previous acts ignored, as the country's palette has been cleansed by tasting the terrible alternative. After all, he's better that Truss, right?

I wouldn't be shocked in the slightest if this was all pre-planned and Johnson is treating the leadership of this country as some sort of game, because, in truth, that's all it is to him anyway.

sashagabadon · 21/10/2022 07:01

My view is that the Luz drama was / is pre planned but to anoint Sunak. However Boris throwing his hat into the ring has upset the carefully laid out plans as everyone knows Boris will win in a Sunak v Boris fight among Tory MP’s and members. Today show just mentioned Sunak “ reaching out olive branch” to Boris to “ reunite” so that only confirms my suspicion.
I would bet on Boris as PM and Rishi as Chancellor by Tuesday morning

sashagabadon · 21/10/2022 07:02

Queue lots of tabloid headlines superimposing Boris head over Bobby Ewing body in the shower

MarshaBradyo · 21/10/2022 07:04

If it is Sunak and Johnson, and I agree it could be likely, I hope Sunak gets more say on reigning in the spending

He has being right over market reaction in his favour

Benjispruce4 · 21/10/2022 07:07

If they want to lose the next GE, get Boris back.

Advocat20 · 21/10/2022 07:10

I’d rather have Boris back than Sunak the snake! I think they should absolutely bring back Boris, realistically it’s the best choice they’ve got.

A general election at this stage might be worse. For the first time in years though I’m actually contemplating voting labour when the time comes because I agree we need a windfall tax on the energy companies. The only problem is I really like our local conservative MP he’s done a lot for us.

This type of post shows the issue for Sunak when it comes to a GE. I don’t share the view but I wouldn’t necessarily think Johnson wouldn’t do better due to some of these views.

NCFT0922 · 21/10/2022 07:21

@Advocat20 I’m assuming you’re male if you’re considering voting labour? Must not have daughters either.

Yes I agree. Boris loves to spend money and make everyone happy all of the time by agreeing with what they say and then agreeing with the next person and the next etc

sashagabadon · 21/10/2022 07:27

I wonder if he will keep on Hunt or offer him Foreign office or maybe Chancellor and then Rishi FO.
probably have to offer Penny something but hopefully not education.

NCFT0922 · 21/10/2022 07:21

Female DD and voting labour.

I don't want her or any future GC destroyed by the Tories who have under funded maternity services, making the majority unsafe according to the CQC (backed up by the huge number of maternity scandals)

& if the worst was to happen, i don't want her have almost zero chance of her attacker ending up in court & her waiting 3 years to go to trial.

Bramblejoos · 21/10/2022 07:28

I really don't think Rishi is a leader of men. Nor was Boris really, just looked after himself.
Ben Watson or Penny Mordaunt.
You don't need to be a super brain - you need authority to get good people around you.

Bramblejoos · 21/10/2022 07:30

I wonder what happened to that Top Civil Servant in the Treasury that Kwasi got rid of.
Maybe he can be reinstated and help correct the mistakes.

Anniefrenchfry · 21/10/2022 07:37

I have to admit as much as I do believe that Rishi is intelligent in terms of the economy I do think he’s a one trick pony and he will struggle to exert authority and he couldn’t lead them through and election, he simply lacks the gravitas.

of them all I think it needs to be boris, he is the one with the mandate and he is the one who is still commanding the most support.

on a flip note I don’t understand what labour think they will achieve. There is literally no chance there will be a ge, they are all out there pretending that’s not the case and there is a chance, it’s bonkers. That’s the prime ministers decision and neither truss or who takes over will call it. So they need to focus on the policies of the candidates and work in opposition instead of asking pigs to fly,

walkingonsunshinekat · 21/10/2022 07:40

He has being right over market reaction in his favour

Was he, or did he do what he had to do and oppose whatever she said?

Sunak has an appalling record of wasting 10s of billions of public money - PPE, Test n trace, eat out to help out, stamp duty holiday, 1p off income tax, refusal to have a meaningful windfall tax.

The Tories need to have a fresher face and keep Hunt in post.

WalkingThroughTreacle · 21/10/2022 07:44

"This has all been so ridiculous that the cynic in me would believe that this whole thing has been a plot to refresh Johnson in the eyes of the public".

and

"My view is that the Luz drama was / is pre planned but to anoint Sunak".

I think theories like these are grossly overestimating the ability of the current crop of Tory MPs to plan or coordinate anything more complicated than whose turn it is to bring in the cheese and wine, and they'd likely fuck that up.

walkingonsunshinekat · 21/10/2022 07:44

148 Tory MPs voted that they have no confidence in him, 50 of his own cabinet resigned, 65% of the population thought he should resign and he had a 20% approval rating, just 4% higher than Truss at her lowest ebb.

He will be the gift that keeps giving & what if the standards committee find him guilty? another new PM ?

noblegiraffe · 21/10/2022 07:46

Great, Bring Back Boris and let's have Jacob Rees Mogg as Chancellor and Nadine Dorries as Foreign Secretary.

Pretty much the rest of his cabinet resigned to force his resignation so presumably they wouldn't be working with him again, and that was already a cabinet of no talent.

Win an election? Tories are polling at 14%.

Kellie45 · 21/10/2022 07:47

walkingonsunshinekat · 20/10/2022 17:32

Nobody in recent times joins the Labour party or LibDems if they are ambitious, thinking only for their own advancement, you'd join the Tories surely?

As Liz Truss did, when she realised the LDs weren't going to get her into no10.

You don’t know the Labour Party around here. Full of nasty ambitious little power mad people. Even on the parish council. Awful!
