Why is Sandi Toksvig so interested in the C of E?

Sausagenbacon · 28/01/2023 11:15

and why does Justin Welby bother with her?

www.theguardian.com/world/2023/jan/26/sandi-toksvig-laments-untenable-church-of-england-stance-on-gay-marriage

She's not a christian, but feels entitled to have a chummy chat with the Archbishop of Canterbury, who is wet enough to indulge her.

I'm not particularly invested in the subject, and I am an Anglican, but I do think there is something frankly, pitiful about it.

I expect an article in next week's Guardian with a sad-faced Sandy talking about how the local Mosque/Synagogue won't marry her and her partner, and how 'unsafe' she now feels. Or not.

@pointythings it's quite an old-school insult, isn't it, 'Jezebel'? Like 'harlot' or 'she's no better than she ought to be,' said with a sniff and a side-eye.

pointythings · 14/02/2023 16:59

@MeganTheeScallion if you actually look up what certain types of Christian believe, it does actually mean she is accusing me of being possessed. Brian Eno and David Byrne made a song based on found audio of a Jezebel spirit - the lyrics are a disgusting steaming pile of misogyny and they should never have put it on an album, or at least not without a major content warning. I'm concerned that two major artists could somehow approve of something like that.

But it just goes to show that certain branches of Christianity really, really believe in the subjugation of women, and it's in a way satisfying to have annoyed one to the point where the true colours are showing.

MeganTheeScallion · 14/02/2023 17:36

Yikes!

Ugh, it's always bubbling away, right under the surface, with some. So, so much hate for basic humanity.

pointythings · 14/02/2023 17:44

It worries me that some women are so filled with it, and can't even see it.

MeganTheeScallion · 14/02/2023 20:08

It's chilling @pointythings

Proverbs 21:24 A proud and haughty man—“Scoffer” is his name; He acts with arrogant pride.

So what's your point?

MeganTheeScallion · 14/02/2023 20:24

Baha Men, 1:1-2;
"Who let the dogs out?
Who, who, who, who, who?"

See, we can all do it. Doesn't make a convincing argument, though. It's not quite the gotcha you were going for, sadly.

MeganTheeScallion · 14/02/2023 20:25

"Scoffer" sounds like a dog from an Enid Blyton book.

You mean like people who claim to know what God is thinking?

Bruuuuhhhh · 14/02/2023 23:25

The Bible has undoubtedly been used by evil people to fit a particular agenda. I like to think of the wicked, greedy, conniving bishop in Robin Hood Prince of Thieves - a man of the cloth he might have been, but a man of God he most certainly was not. Friar Tuck boots him out of a window towards the end with a "Go to hell!".
I'm non denominational myself, something about organised religion doesn't sit right. It didn't help that for centuries the average peasant wouldn't have been able to read, let alone have access to the Scriptures in a language they could understand! It was wide open to abuse. Very sad - the Bible gives warnings about this sort of thing and the perpetrators who are "wolves in sheep's clothing".

pointythings · 15/02/2023 09:00

@Bruuuuhhhh you are where my late husband was - you have faith but you don't do organised religion. That's a position I respect.

Also you don't go around accusing people of being possessed.

That's not a high bar. I'd say promoting hate groups like carm is just as bad.

pointythings · 15/02/2023 17:15

@Avalavalanche did @Bruuuuhhhh promote that group? I just looked them up - very disturbing.

Bruuuuhhhh · 16/02/2023 01:40

@pointythings He sounds like a top guy!

@Avalavalanche I did not promote them as already explained up thread, I merely quoted an article of theirs to illustrate my point. As far as I was aware it was a Christian apologetics website. And to reiterate, I think the whole "pray the gay away" is a stupid concept.

Maybe look at the sites you lift things from to justify your homophobia.

pointythings · 16/02/2023 09:32

@Bruuuuhhhh well, he was a top guy when I married him. Then life happened and he became an abusive alcoholic. When he died, I was in the process of divorcing him and had previously had him removed from our house by the police after threats to kill me. I cope by viewing him as two people, the man I married and the addict. His spiritual beliefs never really changed though.

That CAMR site is horrific, by the way. 5 minutes of clicking on links was enough to tell me as much.

There's some fun stuff in there. My favorite is this gem:

Women use many tactics to try taking control of leadership, including nagging, deception, and manipulation.
This always results in sin and often, sorrowful consequences (Genesis 27).
When a woman resorts to these tactics, she is trying to usurp God’s good design of relationship roles.
If a woman is to practice biblical submission, she must first learn to trust God’s goodness and sovereignty.

pointythings · 16/02/2023 10:13

@carbonarya no misogyny at all there. No sirree. Nothing to see here, move along.

Amazing that some people really believe that crap.

Bruuuuhhhh · 16/02/2023 10:40

@pointythings Yikes! that sounds horrific, I hope you've managed to move forward with your life.
The website statement of faith seemed innocuous enough, as did the "about us" or similar. I'll make sure to do a bit more digging in future!

Not this again 🤦‍♂️I've got the feeling we've chatted before...

pointythings · 16/02/2023 10:52

@Bruuuuhhhh it's worth clicking on a few links - I focused on the ones relating to women because that is where these types of 'Christian' tend to reveal their true colours quickly and bingo! There it was!

And thanks, it was tough times but we are 5 years down the line now. I'm happily single, kids young adults now. They're still dealing with the fallout in many ways, but life is mainly good.

Bruuuuhhhh · 16/02/2023 10:59

Very glad to hear it @pointythings.

It's concerning that someone might also read a church's statement of faith, agree with all of it and then innocently wander into that sort of mess 😳.

Given that you linked to it to bolster your argument about homosexuality was wrong, it's hardly a huge assumption to think you knew what kind of group they are.
