The exemption scheme closed today at noon and there is no mechanism to exempt a bully type dog now. The advise was if you were unsure for any large bully/staffy type dog that meets the height criteria (or might grow enough to meet it when adult)and a significant proportion of the description (vague) and does not have KC papers to say it’s another recognised breed (Mastiff, Rottie, Cane Corso etc) then to exempt as a precaution, and at some point there will be a way (mentioned in the legislation but details unclear) to un-exempt if a DLO agrees the dog does not meet type. It’s illegal as of midnight to own a dog that meets the description without a certificate of exemption, and the penalty is up to 6 months in prison or an unlimited fine. In practice it’s unclear who will police this - unless a member of the public reports your dog or it causes trouble then you may be ok, but if it is reported then the dog will be seized and you will face criminal charges unless you can prove it’s not an XL. I’d suggest you have the dog muzzled and on a short lead at all times and this reduces the chances of anyone reporting you.

If she’s a pitbull you’ve got a problem anyway. What was she sold to you as?
And yes, she doesn’t look like an XL she does however look very much like a red nose pitbull.

They’ve told me a banter bulldoggo I think that’s how you spell it not sure

holycrabsticks · 31/01/2024 17:00

Wtf is wrong with you?

Take it to the vet and ask what to do.

boogaloola · 31/01/2024 16:39

How long have you had her, OP? And what breed was she sold to you as?

I’ve had her since she was about 11 weeks old she is now 18months old and was sold to me as a banter bulldoggoe sorry unsure how to spell the last bit

There's bugger all enforcement of the MANY pit bulls wandering around currently. The police have fuck all funds to deal with most crimes. So long as your dog is well behaved and trained I'm sure it will be fine. If asked I'd go with lab/shar pei mix. She easily could be.

She may not be an XL bully but she's definitely a bully breed that you never wanted, you can't afford to register, you've bought from presumably a backyard breeder as you have no papers, she has horribly long nails and you're bringing up around children. I'm questioning quite a lot of the thinking that you've got going on tbh.

You said it much nicer than I would!

OzziePopPop · 31/01/2024 17:04

If she’s 18 months she could have been spayed long ago. Please sort it asap, for her health!

“Too young to be spayed”. Hmmm.

Hmmm ? What ?

oh god loads of people were telling me too wait until she’s at least 18months old so it doesn’t cause any sort of problems 🤷‍♀️ Jesus 🥲😅

Similar people to those you bought her off? Or a fully qualified vet? Cos I’d be amazed if a vet suggested spaying this late! She’s safer spayed, from all sorts of problems including various cancers. It’s honestly a good choice for the dogs health.

ASwimADay · 31/01/2024 17:10

I think you need to speak to a vet asap.

Lollypop701 · 31/01/2024 17:13

Well she doesn’t really look like a banter but she does look pit bullish… basically you need a vet to confirm (and maybe get the nails sorted too)

Strassen · 31/01/2024 17:15

For heavens sake people the vet can't help! The vet isn't going to make a breed determination.

Well if the OP 'can't afford to have her exempted', then I don't suppose spaying is happening any time soon.

Indeed. What could possibly go wrong? Did so much research on the type that she doesn't even really know what it's called.

BloodandGlitter · 31/01/2024 17:17

Not defending OP here but a lot of vets now recommend spaying/neutering later in larger breed dogs to allow the growth plates to close.

I know, I was trying to just think of the dog and press the urgency that way 🙁

MalcolmTuckersSwearBox · 31/01/2024 17:19

Those saying 'she's a breed you never wanted' to the OP, that's not strictly true.

I hadn't heard of the 'banter bulldogge' described by the OP, so looked it up. It's a 'designer crossbreed' of boxer x bull breed/s. Therefore, technically that could be a boxer x pitbull and meet the spec for this crossbreed. The OP's dog could be a boxer x pitbull who inherited mostly pit characteristics but has the slenderness of a boxer.

I can definitely afford it but just couldn’t do it at all for today or before as I’ve had a lot too pay out and was thinking if she is a pitbull they are already banned so what in hell do I do with her as I don’t want to be getting into any trouble as I have kids aswell

Another clueless owner of what may now be a banned dog. Super.

Patchworksack · 31/01/2024 17:22

Vets have been specifically told that we can’t certify if a dog meets type criteria or not. The only person who can is a police dog legislation officer.
I would suggest given that you have committed a criminal offence if she does meet type that you endeavour never to come to a DLOs attention.

InASnowGlobeSpinning · 31/01/2024 17:22

That dog doesn't look like an xl bully but it does look like a pitbull - why would you buy a dog whose history and parentage you don't know anything about and bring it into your house with your children? Pitbulls are banned for a reason; it's not about getting into trouble for owning one but keeping your children safe.

Walking2024now30days · 31/01/2024 17:24

viques · 31/01/2024 16:19

Also make sure your dog is spayed and microchipped, though that is just good dog ownership so I expect you have already done that.

@viques

🤣🤣🤣🤣

yeah right.

@Becky332 why why why have you not done something about this before now?

why have you ended up with this puppy if you can't afford it?

do you even have insurance?

YNK · 31/01/2024 17:25

You will get good advice from 'DDA Watch'.
Keep her under control at all times (to protect her) and if questioned be honest about her being a cross-breed.
If she is taken due to 'type' do NOT sign anything without advice from the above charity.

I had a long-legged staffy who was seriously the best dog I ever had - loving, loyal, gentle and very laid-back, but I was always conscious that she could possibly have failed the measurements.
Your girl looks gorgeous and reminds me more of an American Bulldog which isn't a restricted breed.

Excuse me ? You don’t need too come on here and be horrible , the lady I bought her off only lived down the road and have known her for years so I trusted her when she had told me she was a different breed which she isn’t . About clueless owner at least I am trying too get help and ask questions
