Presumably you saw her with both parents? What were they?

Why 'presumably'?

I have a well bred dog from a reputable source and it is not the norm for a breeder to have both parents. In fact, that is a red flag.

Wanttobeok · 31/01/2024 20:05

That's a Pit Bull and clearly isn't being walked because no dogs claws get like that if they are...and you have kids. Fucking wonderful

I would expect to see the puppies with their mother and have at least some evidence of the father. I asked as the OP purchased from her friend so it isn't beyond the realms of possibility to have seen both.

Out of curiosity, why would you see it as a red flag for the breeder to be able to introduce you to both parents? I don't mean that the breeder has to own both, just to know who they are. I don't know a responsible breeder who would have an issue with this.

To be able to give you info re the stud/father in an ethical scenario, yes but not 'introduce' or 'show' you the father, no. Definitely yes to see mum with the puppies.

MalcolmTuckersSwearBox · 31/01/2024 20:21

"You saw her with both parents" suggests that the breeder had both the male and female in their home. This is highly unusual in a reputable breeder's home and is a massive red flag for a dodgy set up.

I agree. Where I was going was that this was apparently a friend. If I were getting a puppy from a friend who was a breeder, who lives just up the road, it isn't beyond the realms of possibility that I might pop along to meet the sire. In usual circumstances, definitely see with the mother, with details of sire.

In this instance, I don't think anything was planned.

If you buy a dog like that and keep it in a house with your children you clearly don't like kids very much

Nevercloserfortherestofourlives · 31/01/2024 20:55

Becky, how much are you exercising and training this dog ? When and how much do you walk and train her ?
She looks like she needs at least an hour to two hours a day to be happy. Her claws are far too long. I never have to cut my dogs claws because they wear down on walks. You cannot keep a dog like that (no matter what type, pit bull, X-L Bully, Rottie, Boxer or any other type of big breed like she is) without proper training and exercise.
If you do you’re waiting for a disaster to happen. Please protect your children.

Nevercloserfortherestofourlives · 31/01/2024 20:59

Also, if she’s had a season she’s ready to be spayed at 18 months. Not too early under those circumstances.

Becky332 · 31/01/2024 17:52

Ok and this is what I have said she was sold too me under that breed when she was younger and like I said I can see she does not look like that breed now

A Banter is a rare breed. She would have cost a lot of money. And not many people will be breeding them, so I imagine you have all her registration papers with KC etc? If not (and I'm guessing not) you've been very naive. And now either you will pay via a lot of money for spaying registering etc - or, more likely, she will. With her life.
There really needs to be a much better way of regulating breeding and selling of dogs in the UK when anyone can breed any dog, badly, and any fool with enough money can buy it.

It isn't always a red flag. Good breeders may have different lines, with their own dogs out for stud. But yes, not common. And almost certainly not what happened here anyway.

I think context is everything. With our puppy I didn't ask anything about the father because he was a well known stud dog who has won his class of Crufts two years in a row and his full bio including test scores in on the stud Kennel website. We met the puppies with Mum and spent a few hours with them, choosing our puppy, initially from 3, then narrowed to two. We sat in the kitchen/diner of the house, watching the puppies as they roamed, watched the mum interact with them, etc. Then we went back a few weeks later to collect her.

OP, am sure you are feeling defensive right now, but I think it's sensible to take a moment to think about the whole thing. My understanding with pit bulls is that they can appear to be good pets but IF they bite, that bite is incredibly strong and dangerous. And you never know when that moment would come. I would not have one in my house with children. If they are under-exercised (through having a busy life etc) that only increases the risks.

This!

Please reconsider this OP, even if you don't respond to us. Please protect your kids!

I am a dog owner and a dog lover but I will ALWAYS maintain that you never truely know what your dog is capable of until/if they show you, and then it's too late.

Even the smallest of dogs have potential to be aggressive and do damage.

@Becky332

How are you getting on?

oakleaffy · 02/02/2024 09:08

LizzoBorden · 31/01/2024 16:39

She may not be an XL bully but she's definitely a bully breed that you never wanted, you can't afford to register, you've bought from presumably a backyard breeder as you have no papers, she has horribly long nails and you're bringing up around children. I'm questioning quite a lot of the thinking that you've got going on tbh.

Those are talons- those nails desperately need clipping- and it looks like a dog that could easily become a problem if not muzzled and leashed.

Dogs need lots of care and training- it costs in terms money and time-
The only thing that is “ Free” is exercise.

if someone can’t “Afford” a mere £90 odd pounds for exemption, how can they afford a large ( presumably uninsured) dog that will need routine worming treatments and vet fees.

All animals cost money to keep well.

Do you, looking back, see how ridiculously irresponsible it was to introduce this dog into a family home knowing so little about the breed?

Now you're pretty sure she's a pit bull, what measures have you taken to safeguard your children?

And I also wonder why the dog's nails are so long? I'm not a pit bull fan but it's not fair to leave any dog with nails too long.

Thanks for your comment her nails are all sorted now

So I take her out in the mornings for half an hour before I take kids to school then when I get back home I’ll take her out again for an hour and then again later on for another hour , she is a very happy dog to be honest and she is well cared for to be honest people are saying it looks like she doesn’t get walked etc because of her nails but she does go out quite a lot of the times . Training I haven’t kept on top of to be honest but she does know all basic commands and does listen too me very well

You have a dog that's a breed you're unsure of, but you know potentially includes Pit Bull in the mix, and a child in your home, and you 'haven't kept on top of' training'?

Can you honestly not see how completely irresponsible that is when it comes to the welfare of both to your child and dog?

Gloriosaford · 12/02/2024 12:31

That a animal is a Pitbull and therefore already illegal.
If I saw that I would report it immediately.

Traumdeuter · 13/02/2024 14:00

How’s the muzzle training going?

tempnameforadvice · 17/02/2024 23:48

Another child death waiting to happen. Absolute chav mentality. Judging so, so hard.
