@Walking2024now30days what shitty irresponsible advice. Crazy how people that are into these sorts of dogs get the reputation that they do

@Becky332

where did this woman up the road get her from?

you really should have prioritised her life over your kids presents & parties. You could have bought them a small surprise & promised them a present when you had more money becayse 'doggy NEEDS this so they don't take her away'. Kids understand that stuff

I'm really am sorry about the family stuff & of course you don't need to say what has been going on!

you do need someone to cut her nails, get a price off the vets & off local groomers. Perhaps get the groomer/vets to show you how to do it.

I do think she's gorgeous, & as 'we are where we are'. I'd decide that she's a 'red lab' x 'something & get that in file at the vets. Keep working on the muzzle training & use it at all times & do whatever else is required & keep her out of trouble so she sails under anyone's radar & pray. A LOT!

Someone can't "just decide she's a red lab"! She looks nothing like a lab but looks a LOT like a pit bull or a bully.

Sorry OP but you've got yourself into a tricky situation that could have been avoided with some planning and foresight. This has been in the pipeline for a long time now and there was no suggestion that the laws were going to be halted. What breed is she insured as?

puddypud · 31/01/2024 18:20

Irresponsible dog ownership at its finest.

murasaki · 31/01/2024 18:25

@Becky332 you can ask me not to judge, but I am , and hard.

tempnameforadvice · 31/01/2024 18:30

This thread is exactly why we have the new rules. And OP seems to be exactly who I think of when I think of owners of dogs like these. Also judging hard. Unashamedly.

eggsandbitcoin · 31/01/2024 18:37

Go on, get the boot in. That’ll help.

berksandbeyond · 31/01/2024 18:42

Shouldn’t you be on netmums?

flusterbluff · 31/01/2024 18:54

@OzziePopPop Similar people to those you bought her off? Or a fully qualified vet? Cos I’d be amazed if a vet suggested spaying this late! She’s safer spayed, from all sorts of problems including various cancers. It’s honestly a good choice for the dogs health.

This is just incorrect. Many dogs suffer greater risks if neutered too early. Particularly larger breeds. If neutered before growth plates have fused, dogs can have higher risk of joint disorders. Particularly breeds like labs and retrievers who are already prone to hip issues.

Yes, but the dog is now 18 months. She could have been done from 12-14 months perfectly safely (according to my v experienced vet) depending on exactly how big she is. I foster for a large animal charity and have taken over 50 dogs in for neutering/spaying, we do all of them only when the vet advises and I’ve had St Bernard’s here that we had done before 18 months (as the vet felt it was safe). I doubt this dog has a spay planned any time soon…

A lot of irresponsible idiots tell vets a load of bull to try and get round the legislation. They think by telling the vets it’s something else and having it noted as a specific crossbreed that it’ll be safe from the current restrictions. What these twats don’t know is that vets don’t decide on if a dog is an XL bully/Pitbull etc. Vet records mean absolutely nothing if a dog is suspected of being a restricted breed.

Irresponsible people like you are exactly the reason these dogs needed to be banned.

Absolutely this .
It never ceases to amaze me how dim some people are . No sense and no money . All dogs deserve better .

timetofetgit · 31/01/2024 19:14

She doesn't look like an xlbully, so you don't need an exemption. Nor does she look like a banterdoggo. She does however look like a pit bull which is also an illegal breed (red nosed or American Pitt)
Op, her nails are too long, she needs to be spayed, however before you spay her I'd suggest you do a DNA test to double check her breeding, if she's a pit bull you might want to consider pts. I know it's unpalatable, she's a lovely looking dog, but is owning her really worth the risk?
For now keep her muzzled when out walking. No excuse not to muzzle no matter how much she hates it (she will eventually get used to it, my Ddog has to be muzzled on walks because she's on a special diet , unfortunately she's also a walking dustbin!).

MalcolmTuckersSwearBox · 31/01/2024 19:16

Muzzle train her with a proper bite-proof muzzle and keep her on lead, at the very, very least.

AuntieMarys · 31/01/2024 19:19

You are exactly the sort of person who shouldn't own a dog.

todayshappening · 31/01/2024 19:25

@timetofetgit you do know that xl bully's are made up from various bull breeds including pit don't you? And 18m is too young I have an xl and he's not being done until June. He's two in July and that's when he'll be fully mature.

I didn't spay my giant breed until she was 5 years. It was the best choice for me and no regrets. Dogs needs hormones whilst growing and early spaying is not recommended.

Along with anyone else who thinks it's acceptable to buy a dog of unknown breed from 'the woman down the road'.

HappiestSleeping · 31/01/2024 19:32

Becky332 · 31/01/2024 17:52

Ok and this is what I have said she was sold too me under that breed when she was younger and like I said I can see she does not look like that breed now

Presumably you saw her with both parents? What were they?

sprigatito · 31/01/2024 19:34

That thing is the Platonic idea of a fucking pitbull . Couldn't be more obvious. HOW are people this clueless?! It's insane that you can just buy something like this from "a woman down the road" and move it in with your kids, then a few months down the line you're looking at it thinking..."oops.. may have accidentally bought an illegal, overbred, unpredictable monster". Madness.

@Alwaysalwayscold

no she's not.

its the thugs that encourage them to be aggressive, that use them to show they're big tough men.

1984Winston · 31/01/2024 19:36

It doesn't matter what a DNA test says, If her measurements make her of 'type' (Pitbull or XL) and its passed the time to exempt her you have an illegal dog, you either PTS or keep her knowing you could be in trouble if someone reports you. (I've worked in vets and we saw plenty of pitbulls, we wouldn't have reported one unless it was aggressive so still get her spayed)

Iwannerbeyourslave · 31/01/2024 19:52

BloodandGlitter · 31/01/2024 17:17

Not defending OP here but a lot of vets now recommend spaying/neutering later in larger breed dogs to allow the growth plates to close.

Yep, our Retriever will be spayed around 18 months to reduce cancer risks in later life. It was advised by our vet and is the new norm for such breeds.
