My cat has been poisoned

Devastated is an understatement. Charlie began to look dizzy yesterday, I then found him barely conscious, took him to the emergency vets where they concluded he's been poisoned with anti-freeze.

My poor baby is fighting for his life, vet has given him vodka (?!) intravenously but I am feeling horribly miserable after doing some research and learning they often don't recover. He is only 2 and usually healthy. Seeing the vet at 7.30 to find the results of his bloods now they have done everything they can - this will then prompt either further treatment or euthanasia.

I went to warn my neighbours, who informed me their FOUR cats were killed the exact same way, and never told us?!?!? Have informed RSPCA and police. I am really struggling to deal with the fact this is most likely a deliberate poisoning.

Charlie was showing early signs of renal and kidney failure yesterday but has made it through the night and these bloods will tell us if the treatment has helped. Feeling very very sad right now.

I guess I am just posting in the hope that someone knows of a cat who has survived this :( Please keep your fingers crossed for my precious Charlie :(

Bloody hell, I'm sorry. That's shocking. I really really hope he's ok. Will keep my fingers and toes crossed for you.

TheBolter · 17/06/2012 17:16

Oh Scooby I am so sorry, I now have two cats but was devastated when I lost one two years ago.

Sending lots of positive thoughts and prayers to little Charlie xxx

RandomMess · 17/06/2012 17:20

How utterly utterly awful Sad

BetterOnACamel · 17/06/2012 17:21

Shock I'm so sorry OP, what a horrific thing to happen! Poor Charlie, I'd be completely devastated. Sending you a ((BIG HUG)) and keeping it all crossed for Charlie - and hoping karma really gets back at whoever would do such a heinous thing to an animal!

Wheresmycaffeinedrip · 17/06/2012 17:21

Oh my God I'm so Sad and Angry on your behalf. Your poor, poor cat I really hope he pulls through.

Did your neighbours know you had a cat? Maybe they didn't realise and so that's why they didn't say anything?

EauRouge · 17/06/2012 17:23

Oh no, poor Charlie :( I hope the fuckers that did it get caught. Fingers crossed for Charlie.

QOD · 17/06/2012 17:24

Omg that's so sick. Poor baby

Doodlekitty · 17/06/2012 17:24

Oh god, that's horrific. Fingers crossed for you.
Our dog suffered similar 2 years ago but hers was not deliberate. She got poisoned by blue green algae which usually kills within 12 hours. We got her to vets and she was given charcoal and a drip and was fully recovered within a day. It's terrifying but some of them, like my girlie, defy the statistics. Thinking of you

AdventuresWithVoles · 17/06/2012 17:24

Scarey, does rumour mill have any ideas who or why?

edam · 17/06/2012 17:28

Oh, I'm so sorry, poor Charlie. Am sending very strong wishes for a recovery. How horrible.

ScoobyDoo2012 · 17/06/2012 17:30

No we live in a really quiet town everyone is older middle class, yes neighbours knew. We have another cat who is - thank god - healthy. We are not letting her out of the house, not sure what to do about her. Thinking of buying a cat lead. It was apparently in our local newspaper a few months ago, but we only found out yesterday.

My ds keeps asking when he's coming home, he's only 4 so doesn't understand :( We got Charlie when our precious cat was run over and killed aged 14 2 years ago and it's coming up to the anniversary of his death, this is just mortifying.

I can't decide what I'm feeling the most- anger or sadness. I just want to scream and cry (and fucking kill whoever did this). The vet has been amazing. He stayed 3 hours after his shift, fighting for Charlie. We stupidly don't have insurance so are running up a large bill fast, he even bought the vodka out of his own money (and informed us it was the most expensive bottle he's ever bought- the more expensive- the purer).

Every time the phone rings I'm convinced they are going to tell me we have lost him. Oh god this is a living nightmare.

That's awful Sad I know that anti-freeze is very tasty to cats but some horrid person has blatantly left it out in their garden or something!! Can't see how else 4 cats in the same area would suffer the same fate Sad

edam · 17/06/2012 17:34

Why don't the manufacturers put something in anti-freeze to make it taste horrid to cats, so they spit it out after one tiny taste?

TwllBach · 17/06/2012 17:39

That's Awful OP, I'm so sorry Sad I'd be devastated if that was my cat - I can't believe someone would do that on purpose?

I've got my fingers firmly crossed for you.

VivaLeBeaver · 17/06/2012 17:40

I had a cat with very similar symptoms but vet reckoned it was rat poison not antifreeze. Cat came staggering into the house and collapsed.

Cat was given loads of Vit K to combat the internal bleeding. Is your vet sure its not rat poison?

My cat survived. Hope yours does. Awful, awful thing to happen.

ScoobyDoo2012 · 17/06/2012 17:43

epetitions.direct.gov.uk/petitions/12547

I have had everyone I know signing this today, it's a petition to get a bitter substance added to antifreeze so they don't eat it. I have set up a Facebook group and am making posters to put everywhere in my local area.

As far as I see, Charlie is fighting- the least I can do is join him in his fight. He's being so brave. They've put him by a window, and apparently has a hangover due to all the vodka they administered last night.

Do these people not realise the pain the cause?! Or do they just not give a shit?! They should be put in prison, I don't think that would be in any way an over-reaction. What if my ds had somehow consumed it?! Grr the anger is setting in again.

PullUpAPew · 17/06/2012 17:44

So sorry to hear this. I hope the Police/RSPCA are supportive. Fingers crossed for Charlie, your vet sounds great.

ScoobyDoo2012 · 17/06/2012 17:44

Hmm he didn't mention rat poison? Just said anti-freeze based on his bloods. I know they are giving him vitamin K and calcium. Will research rat poison now...

OP posts:
VivaLeBeaver · 17/06/2012 17:45

Well I guess if antifreeze affects blood values the vet knows what he's talking about. I would think if its rat poison their clotting would be low or something......

ScoobyDoo2012 · 17/06/2012 17:47

His clotting is low, when they tried to fit catheter he began to bleed very easily :S

OP posts:
PorkyandBess · 17/06/2012 17:54

How absolutely heartbreaking for you.

Could this be deliberate? Would a cat drink antifreeze if it came across it?

I really hope he pulls through, your vet sounds fab.

PorkyandBess · 17/06/2012 17:57

Okay, have just read your petition thread so I understand how cats could come to drink it.

How awful, I will be adding my name to petition.

ScoobyDoo2012 · 17/06/2012 17:58

Hi, based on our neighbours 4 cats and cats from the other side of the village all dying from the same thing we suspect deliberate. And yes, from what I understand antifreeze has a sweet taste that animals are drawn to :(
