My cat has been poisoned

Devastated is an understatement. Charlie began to look dizzy yesterday, I then found him barely conscious, took him to the emergency vets where they concluded he's been poisoned with anti-freeze.

My poor baby is fighting for his life, vet has given him vodka (?!) intravenously but I am feeling horribly miserable after doing some research and learning they often don't recover. He is only 2 and usually healthy. Seeing the vet at 7.30 to find the results of his bloods now they have done everything they can - this will then prompt either further treatment or euthanasia.

I went to warn my neighbours, who informed me their FOUR cats were killed the exact same way, and never told us?!?!? Have informed RSPCA and police. I am really struggling to deal with the fact this is most likely a deliberate poisoning.

Charlie was showing early signs of renal and kidney failure yesterday but has made it through the night and these bloods will tell us if the treatment has helped. Feeling very very sad right now.

I guess I am just posting in the hope that someone knows of a cat who has survived this :( Please keep your fingers crossed for my precious Charlie :(

I am so sorry.

MonaLotte · 20/06/2012 09:06

So sorry about Charlie :( xxx

I hope they catch the evil bastard who did it.

MarshmallowFarm · 20/06/2012 09:16

So so sorry Scooby. Have been keepig everything crossed for Charlie. What a truly horrendous experience for all of you.

Have you told the police? It is murder. How can people get away with murdering innocent creatures. I am not a Daily Mail type but in this instance would like to proverbially lock them up and throw away the key. Whoever has done this needs to be brought to justice.

Animals don't have enough of a voice in this or any other country. When you are feeling strong again please complain about the RSPCA's ineffectual response. I for one give them a lot of financial support in the belief that they care what happens to animals. Clearly in this instance they didn't Angry

Thinking of you and your family. RIP lovely little Charlie Sad

BetterOnACamel · 20/06/2012 09:28

I'm so sorry Scooby. Sad
I do hope whoever did this gets what's coming to them.
RIP little Charlie.

So sorry to read this Scooby.

I love the Wiccan saying - brought more tears to my eyes. And I am a great believer in Karma, so whoever did this will get their just desserts.

The RSPCA are pretty useless imo.

Big hugs for you and your family.

ScoobyDoo2012 · 20/06/2012 10:08

Thank you again everyone. I did go to the police, who said they would have a "friendly word" with people in area, but never heard back. They said there's not much they can do.

Keep dreaming about Charlie. In work today trying to hold it together. I have lost hope in many national charities including RSPCA and will donate to local causes in future.

The last place I am going to try in our local cat protection charity, maybe they will be helpful. Going to tell ds Charlie has gone to live with the vet who's looking after him.

Tell the local paper as well. My local one was very interested when my cat was poisoned and wrote an article.

ellenjames · 20/06/2012 10:32

Ormiriathomimus · 20/06/2012 10:42

This is the email I have just sent to the rspca

I would like to complain about the recent handling of my case. I contacted the RSPCA on Sunday after discovering my cat had been poisoned using anti-freeze. Sadly, my cat is not alone, our local area seems to have seen a spike in such cases over the past few months. I informed my call handler that my neighbour had lost 4 cats to anti-freeze poisoning, and others nearby. I was told I would hear back shortly, and never did.

Frankly I am angry and disappointed with how this has been dealt with. As the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals I expected this to be treated with the upmost concern. If you, the RSPCA, are not interested, then what hope do other animals in my area have? How many more have to be killed before action is taken?

I have a young child living at home and currently we do not know whether the anti-freeze is distributed in victim's gardens or if these cats are finding it. I consequently don't feel happy to let my son, or remaining cat, out of the house.

I have spoken with the local press who were saddened by your response. Our community is being targeted. Cases of these poisonings seem to be streets apart, but all within an uncomfortably close radius. We are left wondering if it is a potential gardener who is responsible.

I am taking all action I possibly can including engaging in social networking and distributing warning leaflets in my neighbourhood. I have spoken to people who donate to the RSPCA who have been left angry and wondering what their money is being spent on, if not a case like this. I have lost all faith in this charity.

So, so sorry for you all. Poor Charlie.

It's a wicked, evil thing to posion someone's beloved pet. I hope they die a miserable painful death too.

redrubyshoes · 20/06/2012 11:58

So sorry Scooby. I signed that petition years ago to put a bittering agent in anti-freeze and nothing has been done.

I despair I really do. Maybe something will happen if the Prime Minister's cat gets poisoned.

Moodykat · 20/06/2012 12:11

Poor Charlie and poor you. We currently have a spate of this going on around us, has been in the local paper. It is sick and the people doing it are cunts. No other word for them.

PedanticPanda · 20/06/2012 12:47

So sorry to hear about little Charlie :( we have the SSPCA here in Scotland and they are completely useless.

PedanticPanda · 20/06/2012 12:52

I've joined the group and posted it on my wall with friends tagged to encourage friends to join

ScoobyDoo2012 · 20/06/2012 13:17

Thank you. redrubyshoes wow I didn't realise how long this had been around. Hopefully with social networking so big this will help. How many more poor cats need to die. It is too late for my Charlie, and we are heart broken. But I want to stop this happening to anyone else, wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy.

Scooby I am so so sorry Sad Your poor beautiful Charlie and also you and your family tooSad.

You are right to be incensed. 'Friendly word' from the police? Oh that'll do the trick. What a jokeHmm. There never seems to be 'much they can do' about anything. God what a lawless vindictive world we live inAngry

And the rspca could be doing so much more too.

This is appalling and so easily avoided if only the ingredient in anti freeze could be changed.

hellymelly · 20/06/2012 13:49

Oh Gosh I am so terribly sorry to read this thread. That has to be the worst possible way to lose a loved animal, to have had him murdered by someone. And you still have the fear hanging over you as there is clearly someone sick in the neighbourhood. I agree that leafleting every house is a good idea, as if someone misguidedly thinks that it will make the cats ill, rather than kill them, then the info will be out there, and all your neighbours with pets and/or small children will be on high alert. Maybe let the local radio station know too?
Really feel for you, and am very sad about your lovely cat.
Sounds as though you had an amzing vet who really did do everything to give him a chance.

elastamum · 20/06/2012 13:54

Really sorry to hear this Sad

Unfortunatley the RSPCA are underresourced and pretty useless. We had a horse near us that was terribly ill and untreated. After 8 calls to the RSPCA over about 3 months I accosted the owners, forced them to sell it to me and took it to my vet who put the poor thing down as it was too late to be saved.

I then got a call from the RSPCA the next day asking how they couold help!!!

foolserrand · 20/06/2012 14:49

I'm so sorry for your loss, poor Charlie. Have joined the Facebook group, signed the petition and implored my friends to do the same.

ChuffMuffin · 20/06/2012 17:16

I'm so, so sorry to hear. Hellymelly is right, it is murder. I hope the person who has done gets a well deserved metric fuckton of bad karma.

You should definitely contact The Chester Chronicle.

I'm so sorry again, big hugs to you and your family.

changeforthebetter · 20/06/2012 17:24

So sorry about Charlie.

Petition signed Brew

PorkyandBess · 20/06/2012 19:56

So sad to hear about your lovely cat.

edam · 20/06/2012 19:59

I'm so sorry Scooby. Your vet sounds like a good 'un, seems he did everything he could possibly try for Charlie.

Sometimes I really wish karma worked so bastards like the swines who poisoned Charlie get what they deserve...
