My cat has been poisoned

Devastated is an understatement. Charlie began to look dizzy yesterday, I then found him barely conscious, took him to the emergency vets where they concluded he's been poisoned with anti-freeze.

My poor baby is fighting for his life, vet has given him vodka (?!) intravenously but I am feeling horribly miserable after doing some research and learning they often don't recover. He is only 2 and usually healthy. Seeing the vet at 7.30 to find the results of his bloods now they have done everything they can - this will then prompt either further treatment or euthanasia.

I went to warn my neighbours, who informed me their FOUR cats were killed the exact same way, and never told us?!?!? Have informed RSPCA and police. I am really struggling to deal with the fact this is most likely a deliberate poisoning.

Charlie was showing early signs of renal and kidney failure yesterday but has made it through the night and these bloods will tell us if the treatment has helped. Feeling very very sad right now.

I guess I am just posting in the hope that someone knows of a cat who has survived this :( Please keep your fingers crossed for my precious Charlie :(

scooby

So very sorry to hear about Charlie, how people can do this to an innocent animal is beyond me.

Do you mind sending me a pm with the area this happened in, I am also in Chester and now very worried about letting my cats outdoors.

Thanks x

So sorry about Charlie Sad

I haven't read the whole thread so I apologise if I'm repeating anyone, but it seems this has been going on in Upton since at least May. It's disgusting.

Hi Scoobydoo, so sorry to hear about your cat charlie. Our lovely cat Jack was killed in exactly the same way 5 weeks ago and we are still heartbroken! We know who did it and have informed the police, but they have not got back to us. It is just heartbreaking isn't it? Can you post a link to your facebook group so I can join? We miss our lovely jack so much, they certainly are a big part of the family. He was so special! Sending hugs, know exactly how you must be feeling. It's devastating!

I have worked in vets for 15 years and seen this so many times. Sometimes its because people put down poision down for the rats mice etc then kitty comes along and eats them. Then the cat is ill. The way rat poison works is the main ingredient is Warfarin. This is a blood thinning agent, thus it bleeds the animals inside out. They bleed to death. Its horrendous and very cruel. Cats generally react by looking dazed and wobbly, drunk etc or just very flat, mouth ulcers etc. Kidney and Liver failure is part of the course, this can be controlled with medications and fluids given I.V to thin them out. Sometimes if caught early enough can turn them around. Cats then generally will always have damaged Liver/Kidneys and generally need to be on a specific diet made by someone like 'Hills'. Some cats will pull through, some unfortunately wont. Its very hard to prevent this and often its not deliberate as you dont often see antifreeze lying around. Its generally done like i said..we poision the rats, cats eat them! I hope your kitty pulls through and that its caught in time. xx
