Sign this Parliamentary Petition to update the Equality Act to make clear that a woman - a female of any age - has the protected characteristic of “Sex”, and that this is biological, and cannot be trumped by a man with a Gender Recognition Certificate which miraculously makes him a woman even on his birth certificate; or a man with Gender Reassignment (another of the 9 characteristic under the Equality Act).
Gender Reassignment only requires a girl’s name and new ‘pronouns’, say, or perhaps a pop of lipstick, or even just an assertion of a ‘feeling of being a woman’ to have force. This man went on to put on some leggings and a blond wig and said he was a woman.
A Gender Recognition Certificate, currently given on the basis of gender dysphoria, and the requirement to live in the new gender for two years, actually allows a change of sex on someone’s birth certificate.
Neither a GRC or Gender Reassignment requires surgery and in most cases that option is not chosen.
There needs to be more clarity about what sex means in the law because these designations - Gender Reassignment, and even more so GRCs, - are leading to sex based spaces for women being withdrawn for fear of discrimination litigation even though, in principle, the Equality Act allows some sex based exceptions.
“Sex based” is unclear unless it is made clear that “Sex” in the Equality Act means biological sex not “legal” sex.
