This petition is about single sex exceptions in the Equality Act, which need to be made easier to implement in law, by making clear that the protected characteristic, ”Sex” means biological sex, not sex by being transgender ( no surgeries necessary).
It is not clear because the meaning of “sex” has become confused and there can be perceived clashes with the Gender Recognition Act, and with the other protected characteristic under the Equality Act, Gender Reassignment.
We need the word “sex” to be clear throughout the EA, so organisations may confidentially and legally be allowed to provide single sex (biological) women only spaces for women and girls.
Examples of these single sex spaces we need are prisons, lavatories, changing rooms, hospital wards, rape crisis centres, refuges, dormitories, sports where this makes it safer or fairer, girls’ schools and girl guiding.
