DH was a Royal Marines officers. Buglers everywhere!

AlbieJiggered · 29/03/2026 16:54

Box set doesn't bother me. I think of it as a set of something in a box.
Grammatically, it's not correct, but it doesn't grate. Pack lunch does grate.
Barb wire is funny, it sounds like a cartoon character.

Just seen on MN- taking a back ( taken aback!)

AlbieJiggered · 29/03/2026 20:56

Corniche (Cornish) Grin

butterpuffed · 29/03/2026 22:56

Corniche is a type of cliff path, if that's what they meant.

A Corniche ice cream would just be wrong!

Its a pity we don’t use the word for our coast paths, we could have the Cornish Corniche.

Oh god - 'dophinwa' potatoes is my favourite!

Is it bad form even on Pedants' Corner to point out a spelling mistake in someone's username? If so, apologies. In my defence, it is German and I'm a German teacher! It's 'Schnitzel' not 'Schnizel' Von Krumm.

I know but the correct spelling was already taken! 🤷‍♀️

MagpiePi · 30/03/2026 10:33

Have just seen ‘a Belton braces scenario’ on another thread.

I didn’t know Belton was a centre of extra sturdy trouser accessories manufacturing. 😁

How infuriating! I think my inner pedant would have made me choose something else Grin

ChimpanzeeThatMonkeyNews · 30/03/2026 10:57

On a CV, i read ‘i have lots of experience on the cold face’.

AlbieJiggered · 30/03/2026 11:02

@butterpuffed , It was "I have a daughter called Merryn. Its corniche and at 15 we are yet to meet another child eith her name, have met one adult one."

butterpuffed · 30/03/2026 11:05

Haha!! Definitely wrong 😅

ChimpanzeeThatMonkeyNews · 30/03/2026 11:06

@AlbieJiggeredI read that 10 minutes ago! 😂

AlbieJiggered · 30/03/2026 11:09

I wasn't the one who corrected it - I shared it with you instead. A lot of the names suggested are misspelt. Smile

When I was a child I thought it was ‘Moorish’ - I think I may have first heard the word being used in relation to Turkish Delight so it seemed to be related to exoticism, ‘full of eastern promise’.😂

ThePhantomofAllKnowledge · 30/03/2026 22:09

I thought I saw an autocorrect or voice-to-text error when someone asked another person if they visited a restaurant "off ten," but then they repeated it when they were corrected. ("No, I mean as in "do you go there off ten?")

What a bazaar misunderstanding. 😆
