My vote would have to go to 'definitely' - seems only about 1 in 10 get that right.

On our local freecycle adverts it is always 'greatful/greatfully' rather than 'grateful', it really bugs me.

Nancy66 · 26/03/2008 14:15

Yes, reminds me - the double LL on the end. Helpfull, usefull etc.

I also get really wound up by people that pronounce the letter Aitch 'haitch'.

loads of people confuse lose and loose

TrinityTheProgressingRhino · 26/03/2008 14:18

I get really annoyed with the lose and loose confusion.

theyoungvisiter · 26/03/2008 14:21

accommodation.

Usually spelled acommodation or accomodation even on professional ads.

Agree with lose and loose.

Practice/practise (in fact most of the ice/ise words)

Led/lead

Oliveoil · 26/03/2008 14:23

brocolli (broccoli?/broccolli?)

I saw a taxi with "ring and your there" on the back

could have been worse, could have been "their"...

zippitippitoes · 26/03/2008 14:26

No1ErmaBombeckfan · 26/03/2008 19:00

PrimulaVeris · 26/03/2008 19:04

The correct usage and spelling of their/there/they're and its/it's

When I see it in printed literature and on web sites I begin to see red

Bink · 26/03/2008 19:13

my bugbear is "alright"

MadameCh0let · 26/03/2008 19:15

No I'd say about 60% of people can spell definitely!!

Diarrhoea Only about 5% of people get that right. And I'm not sure I was one of them!

Tutter · 26/03/2008 19:15

weird

often comes out wierd

nailpolish · 26/03/2008 19:16

diarrhoea

ive seen it a million different ways at work

diahorrea being the most frequent

MadameCh0let · 26/03/2008 19:17

Blimey nailpolish! What's your work??

nailpolish · 26/03/2008 19:18

lol

im a nurse

Bink · 26/03/2008 19:19

But to be honest most of these (the "there" confusion, even the "accom" thing) are just water off my back - ie they get a Molesworthian "diskard" reaction & no further attention is paid to the writer or the substance.

I only mind when something or someone ought to know better - like the Sunday Times Culture bit printing a grocer's apostrophe, or a supposedly high-literary novelist using "alright".

MadameCh0let · 26/03/2008 19:19

Ha ha I've just looked at your profile. I see you are the fundraising co-ordinator for your school pta!?

Ha ha! me too. We should swap ideas some day.

nailpolish · 26/03/2008 19:20

its a thankless job isnt it

(school pta i mean. nursing is too but thats another story )

Miaou · 26/03/2008 19:22

Oh I have trouble with diarrhoea (always want to put diahorrea) and vicious (viscious) - argh

MadameCh0let · 26/03/2008 19:26

Have done the recipe collection book, brown money collection, 'cake shop', 'bad-hair day' (bring in 2 euro).

I'm exhausted chugging donations for a charity fundraiser we are having 17/4. Some people get it immediately and just give you really great stuff for free, but it's so embarrassing when people look at you and say "so, you want me to give you something. For nothing."

Anyway! I've finished chugging so I can relax for a bit now. That was torture.

I don't know how you find the time to be a nurse!

joyfulspike · 26/03/2008 19:29

I hate it when have or 've becomes of, could have/could've could of etc grr

zephyrcat · 26/03/2008 19:33

I can't do weird - or wierd?

Tutter · 26/03/2008 19:35

naily, my mum once taught in a very rough part of barnsley (there are some non-rough bits btw ). one morning one of her pupils brought in a note that read along the lines of "our kevin were off school yesterday because he had diarre diorrh dhiar the shits"

true story

margoandjerry · 26/03/2008 19:37

No restaurant is able to spell Caesar as in Caesar Salad. It's always ceaser.
