My vote would have to go to 'definitely' - seems only about 1 in 10 get that right.

spelling is ok, but I have a mental block when it comes to typing tornadsos

see tornadoes

think it's because the asd letters are too close together.

TigerFeet · 27/03/2008 12:41

I wanted to type manoeuvre in a post the other day and had to look it up

Not sure that I've remembered it correctly though

I struggle with access/acess and accross/across

Generally spelling is pretty good though (typing not always so good)

soph28 · 27/03/2008 13:01

Generally Definitely!

I always have to look up Haemorrhage.

CristinaTheAstonishing · 27/03/2008 18:43

"At least they haven't written "Demonic" have they?" Funny that, perhaps people go "Demonic? Surely not. Domonic? Yeah, that sounds right."

CristinaTheAstonishing · 27/03/2008 18:45

Specialty or speciality?

Swedes · 27/03/2008 19:28

Definitely definitely. Also Caribbean.

fluffyanimal · 28/03/2008 10:09

Oh dear - look at MN front page Discussions of the Day - someone quick tell Tech how to spell caesarian!!!

branflake81 · 28/03/2008 10:39

I've noticed a lot of people on MN write "ishoos" - is this a deliberate, post-ironic, specific-to-MN misspelling because if not I'm shocked.

margoandjerry · 28/03/2008 13:04

fluffyanimal, just came on to post the exact same thing!

snottyshoulders · 28/03/2008 13:12

There was a sign up at work saying
"joannes leaving card is in the quite room" Grrrr

Nancy66 · 28/03/2008 13:18

Not a spelling issue but the wrong use of 'myself' really makes me grind my teeth.

The H.R manager where I used to work always sent out memos/emails that ended: "please feel free to come and have a word with myself at any time."

I've historically been a competent (or even good) 'speller', but my spelling has suffered since coming on Mnet. Somehow, my eyes are now open to so many possibilities that never would have occurred to me before....

Also, will admit to being enough of a pedant, that I check the dictionary to make sure I have correct spelling if I am unsure.

moomooface · 28/03/2008 14:07

Speaking of things we struggle to say, I always trip up with abominable... I have to say very slowly and deliberately "a bomb in a bull" otherwise it comes out all wrong.

And I remember being quizzed at school on how to spell diarrhoea - not one person in the class could get it right (there was a prize if we did!) and, because of that, I've been able to spell it ever since.

loobylooby · 28/03/2008 14:09

liaison - commonly the 2nd "i" is missed out, i.e. liason

moomooface · 28/03/2008 14:14

Earlybird - I don't think you're being pedantic to check the spelling of words in the dictionary. Conversely, I think the frequent misspellers of this world are arrogant/ignorant not to do so (although I am of course sympathetic to those who are dyslexic, like my DP).

Checking the dictionary is good practice - give Earlybird a gold star

Earlybird · 28/03/2008 15:18

moomooface - thanks for gold star.

I tend not to be a fast-and-furious poster, and also don't join in on the 'chat' threads much. I mostly post in (what I believe/hope) a thoughtful way, which gives me the time (and inclination) to check spellings. Also, even though I don't 'judge' those who spell incorrectly, I have ingrained habits/standards for my own posts...

And for the record, for some reason I have trouble spelling 'recommend'.......

Swedes · 29/03/2008 10:52

Separate. My old English teacher taught me that separate is a rat to spell. S E P [a rat]E

catok · 29/03/2008 14:39

"You don't get nothing for free these days"
So you may have something without charge, presumably!
Double negatives have always irritated me, and using 'top story' to describe world-shattering news. 'There's a lot' or 'there's many' are just wrong!

Maidamess · 29/03/2008 14:42

I ALWAYS mess up DEFINITELY. Is that right?

Also their (thier)

LaidbackinEngland · 29/03/2008 14:50

The number of times I see 'counsellor' spelt 'counsillor' or 'councillor' ..... particularly on mumsnet.

Grouchyoscar · 29/03/2008 14:54

I can never spell PARALLELL

See, I told you

clam · 30/03/2008 23:11

Practice/practise. Can't anybody spell this one correctly in context? It's the same as advice/advise, yet people are OK with that.

Remotew · 30/03/2008 23:14

For 'their' just remember its 'the' and the ending then you will get it right everytime.

Remotew · 30/03/2008 23:18

I HATE double negatives. I never use them I make sure DD does'nt either, however, its street talk and very trendy so difficult to stop it overlapping into the acceptable.

I anyone says to me 'I did'nt do nothing' I reply well what did you do?

Aero · 30/03/2008 23:20

So many people on our local freecycle group seem to have no idea that 'chest of draws' makes no sense whatsoever. I want to scream 'it's drawers' at them on a regular basis!
