My vote would have to go to 'definitely' - seems only about 1 in 10 get that right.

OP posts:
Bink · 26/03/2008 21:01

Youngvisiter - it was Dan Quayle.

Who also said "A mind is a terrible thing to waste. You take the United Negro College Fund model that what a waste it is to lose one's mind or not to have a mind is being very wasteful. How true that is."

theyoungvisiter · 26/03/2008 21:01

oh lord - even worse! I should have guessed.

I think diarrhoea is partly a problem because it's spelled differently in the US (diarrhea) and I don't know about anyone else, but my web browser tries to correct my spelling using the US dictionary.

It always makes me do a double-take every time I type it out as I think, ok, have I got that wrong?

Twiglett · 26/03/2008 21:08

on here it's appalling

that's the word they can't spell

appalling

tortoise · 26/03/2008 21:09

I always struggle to spell guarantee.

theyoungvisiter · 26/03/2008 21:10

Lol Bink - that quote is great! It's making my eyes hurt just to read it. On a par with "there are known knowns..." etc etc

dinny · 26/03/2008 21:11

definitely (definately - gah!!)
diarrhoea (variously)
disappear (dissapear)
broccoli (brocolli)

margoandjerry · 26/03/2008 21:28

oh yeah - MN regulars:

appauling
here here.

Liberty is currently plastering the compliment/complement mistake all over its windows. "To compliment the China exhibition, we are showcasing the finest Chinese designers"

PaulaYatesBiggestFan · 26/03/2008 21:30

mn regular that drives me nuts is 'devestating'

WendyWeber · 26/03/2008 21:32

Per say for per se, and other similar bits of foreign confusion.

llareggub · 26/03/2008 21:36

I keep seeing "skeptical" everywhere. Is it an alternative spelling?

theyoungvisiter · 26/03/2008 21:38

It's the American spelling I think llareggub

GooseyLoosey · 26/03/2008 21:40

ds (4.10) was helped by a TA to spell a word at school yesterday, it was "suprise". It was not a one off as several children had spelt it this way!

MoosMa · 26/03/2008 22:15

Blu · 26/03/2008 22:33

Reading a book to Ds tonight I realised that I have spelt and pronounced anemone wrong all my life. I thought it was anenome. Although now I have written it I realise I have always said 'anenome' and written 'anemone'.

Liaise.

alarkaspree · 27/03/2008 11:10

Oh I can't say anemone either. I know how now, although I said anenome for many years, but it always comes out anemonenomeprettyflower.

RoxyNotFoxy · 27/03/2008 11:15

Talking of anemone, I know someone who knows she says Candem Town, but can't stop herself. No matter how often she rehearses it mentally, it always comes out wrong.

margoandjerry · 27/03/2008 11:22

I still struggle not to say par cark.

BumperliciousAteTooManyEggs · 27/03/2008 11:40

QOD I posted a thread on this recently, it's I can't bear it, as in bearing weight or something, unless you are saying you can't bare your bum!

sarahsixtoes · 27/03/2008 11:47

I found this book really interesting and useful for my kids -
i before e (except after c)

blueshoes · 27/03/2008 12:10

manoeuvre (British), maneuvre (US)

blueshoes · 27/03/2008 12:12

oops that is er. Drats, still cannot spell

fluffyanimal · 27/03/2008 12:21

One of my students wrote recently in an essay that someone was being put on a peddle stool (meaning pedestal). I laughed for ages over the mental image that created.
