My vote would have to go to 'definitely' - seems only about 1 in 10 get that right.

Okay, it's not a spelling mistake, but I hate the way "ask" is pronounced.

It's not "arksk".

sophiebbb · 30/03/2008 23:27

I saw some grafitti once

"f* of"

which made me laugh!

PS Is that how you spell grafitti???

VeniVidiVickiQV · 30/03/2008 23:28

diarrhoea

Pavlovthecat · 30/03/2008 23:28

necessarily. or is it neccessarily? or nesessarally? or neccesarally? Shall I go on?

margoandjerry · 31/03/2008 10:03

Anyone who finds definitely difficult, here's what I do. Think "finite" - it's the same word basically. Nobody would spell finite wrongly and that makes definite easy.

Appalling seems to be beyond a lot of people.

I've seen it spelt "appauling" so often I've begun to doubt myself. I even checked "to appaul" in the OED just in case and was relieved to find it is not listed, but at the rate it's being used it'll probably worm its way in there before long....

In my job, I see "ammend" and "add" (as in advertisement)an awful lot, because I work with a bunch of Noddys.

The worst one was this morning. I had an e-mail from a colleague about one of his clients. He was e-mailing to apologise that he couldn't be more "persific about the deetales" I work in publishing, fgs. One of the pre-requisites of the job is being able to spell!

Another commonly mis-spelt word is controversial.

margoandjerry · 31/03/2008 16:45

"persific about the deetales"

Bloody hell. That's the worst one I've seen.

VeniVidiVickiQV · 01/04/2008 00:05

Oh today from a company that specialises in "corporate intelligence" I saw the following on an invoice:

"You're ref: xxxxxx"

Gah!

UnquietDad · 01/04/2008 12:03

liaise/ liaison
publicly, NOT "publically"

Then there is the new "conflation" tendency:

anymore
nevermind

and so on.

Furball · 01/04/2008 12:27

I can't spell hemmorage or anuyrism and it crops up quite alot as I suffered a brain one about 10 years ago.

FleurDelacour · 01/04/2008 14:19

minuscule (often pronounced/spelt miniscule)

Araldia · 01/04/2008 17:24

Necessary was one I struggled with at school until a teacher commented "It is necessary for a vicar to wear one collar and two socks"

flyingsaucers · 01/04/2008 17:26

urksmode
grantificallation

always get them rong.

SorenLorensen · 01/04/2008 17:30

I think if you are going to send your children to independent school you should at least spell it correctly - I see that one a lot on here.

I can't spell that little island off Wales - Angelsea, Anglesea, Anglesey, Angelsey...

UnquietDad · 01/04/2008 17:55

"I think if you are going to send your children to independent school you should at least spell it correctly - I see that one a lot on here."

And ditto for grammar school!

UnquietDad · 01/04/2008 23:08

onomatopoeia

It's one I always have to check.

Oh, and another one people get wrong:

agoraphobia

(Not agrophobia, nor agorophobia)

And - where do people stand on the judgement/judgment issue?
