Your and you're

And when to use an apostrophe.

OP posts:
TheCanterburyWhales · 07/04/2020 12:56

@LyingWitchInTheWardrobe Smile you and I go back years. I was Bucharest back in the day.

PieceOfMaria · 07/04/2020 12:57

That would be time well spent indeed.

But someone will tell you you are a twat for thinking that it matters.

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 07/04/2020 12:57

Can I add boarder and border as that's making me feel quite stabby at the moment

This I agree with. I learned to accept the would of, I came to ignore the loose, I manage when I see the devine, but the boarders worry me, I have images of a horde of snowboarders. Or was that a hoard? Grin

LittleMissnotLittleMrs · 07/04/2020 12:58

Can you borrow me a ...
Breathe and breath

PieceOfMaria · 07/04/2020 12:58

I see boarder for border EVERY BLOODY WHERE at the moment.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 07/04/2020 13:00

Hello Bucharest, we do indeed. Nice to see you again. Grin

rc22 · 07/04/2020 13:01

I am getting a little irritated by people telling me what I am 'aloud' to do during lockdown. I can't get too excited about it all though.

PineappleDanish · 07/04/2020 13:05

YANBU.

Also lose and loose, his and he's, been and being.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 07/04/2020 13:08

PieceofMaria, A twat for thinking it matters? No. Posting to put other people down for their SPaG? Yes.

There's a difference between having a discussion about what words mean and checking them for yourself, that's what Pedants' Corner was, and it was a great place to check.

It was never what this thread is, ie. a put-down and designed so, used for a group snide-fest against 'perpetrators'. The fact that so many errors are made by so many busily critiquing seems to be lost on the thread too.

I can't believe that some posters are seemingly incapable of nuance; they certainly are when it matters to them. Perhaps berating people for incorrect/misuse of SPaG is on the 'fun' list for some? I don't know or care but these threads always cause upset which says a lot.

Firsttimelottie · 07/04/2020 13:08

OP,

You suggest that we learn the difference.

As you've gathered our attention, why don't you TEACH the difference?

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 07/04/2020 13:09

Firsttimelottie, a great idea!

TheCanterburyWhales · 07/04/2020 13:11

It isn't that it doesn't matter.

It's that this is a parenting forum, not a literacy class.

I'd love to see some of you hold your own with actual decent writers and users of English on MN though. People who write beautifully and have a command of English usage which is second to none. Who, strangely, never seem to feel the need to start twatty posts like the OP to humiliate others.

Jocasta2018 · 07/04/2020 13:13

Prostate & prostrate.
An acquaintance had investigations into prostate problems so we heard about his possible prostrate cancer. Thankfully all was well with him but I do wonder why the doctors never corrected him.

Crystal87 · 07/04/2020 13:14

Alot of people on this thread are defiantly discusted.

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 07/04/2020 13:15

Surely we are aloud that, Crystal?

LivingOnAnIsland · 07/04/2020 13:15

This hasn't been a parenting forum for a very long time.

1Wildheartsease · 07/04/2020 13:16

I quite (or quiet) like the use of 'loose' for 'lose'.

'Loosing' weight sounds a positive and powerful act.

Thighmageddon · 07/04/2020 13:18

I can't be arsed to check, has the Op been back?

I'm chuckling away to myself with the fact they've had their backside royally whipped.

MsTSwift · 07/04/2020 13:20

Can anyone give me any advise?

I am weary of getting a take away.

I don’t want to loose my cat

BearSoFair · 07/04/2020 13:20

Definitely and defiantly

TheCanterburyWhales · 07/04/2020 13:22

I think they have probably been back. Just not as we originally knew them Wink

I'm heartened to see this reaction. There are threads not in Active anymore started by a group of nasty pieces of work specifically to talk about other posters' English.

SpillTheTeaa · 07/04/2020 13:25

Your out of order OP Grin

tallah · 07/04/2020 13:30

I hope people use this time to stop being stuck up pricks. You going to?

DrivingMsCrazy · 07/04/2020 13:31

I know the OP is coming in for some flack but certain errors do grate! "Alot" does my head in. How hard is it to just tap that little space bar in between?

iklboo · 07/04/2020 13:39

Agree 'alot' and 'abit' are grating. They are even highlighted on spellcheck as errors.

Loosing weight sounds like you've put it on a trebuchet Grin
