Your and you're
Their, they're and there

And when to use an apostrophe.

OP posts:
Snowboarder45 · 07/04/2020 12:02

Poor spelling and grammar can actually hold you back in life. There are simple rules for their/there/they're why not spend this 'extra' time we've been given to improve ourselves? I read job applications and CVs where these errors have been made and all other experience being equal I select candidates based on this type of knowledge, especially if the job will involve written communication.

Pelleas · 07/04/2020 12:04

what does discrete mean?

Discrete means separate.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 07/04/2020 12:04

If it's such a 'fun' thread then why write it in such a patronising way? For the traffic?

Knowing that some people DO struggle with SPaG and get ripped apart for it. Being disingenuous about it doesn't make it any less hurtful.

Darkrainbow · 07/04/2020 12:05

Oh do fuck off dear, as a front line medic I'm a bit busy at the moment (day off today). I went to a failing inner city comp & wasn't diagnosed with dyslexia until half way through my training, doesn't seem to of held me back.
Can I suggest you do a bit of research into literacy privilege and also being a decent human being that doesn't mock people who find different things difficult to you?

gingersausage · 07/04/2020 12:05

@munchbunch12 it means separate.

BeijingBikini · 07/04/2020 12:07

And saying "DH and I" to try and sound posh even when it's completely wrong.

Like "DH and I's house" or "he sent an email to DH and I" or "she was really rude to DH and I".

Just no!

trappedsincesundaymorn · 07/04/2020 12:08

I wouls but I've got a chester draws wot needs sorting.

Blondiney · 07/04/2020 12:10

See also 'weary' and 'wary'.

BeijingBikini · 07/04/2020 12:10

Oh and "I need to loose weight", no you don't

MrsBodger · 07/04/2020 12:11

I think you’ll find pedants’ corner has an apostrophe.
Off now to colour code my sock drawer.

Samtsirch · 07/04/2020 12:11

You cant really go no where’s from here can you OP..?
Thanks for the larfs tho.

ClapForCats · 07/04/2020 12:12

"In regard to" and "with regard to".

NOT "with regards to", which makes me unreasonably furious whenever I see it written.

otterturk · 07/04/2020 12:14

Chose and choose
Lose and loose
Borrow and lend
Specific and the Pacific

Wehttam · 07/04/2020 12:14

Fromage · 07/04/2020 12:17

There, their, they're.

SpongeBobJudgeyPants · 07/04/2020 12:18
Biscuit
BringMeSunshineInMyLife · 07/04/2020 12:18

You have been pacifically asked not to post about this before.

Thedogscollar · 07/04/2020 12:20

How about you rise off your arse and do something bloody useful like volunteer for NHS.
Frontline NHS here, on a day off, we had to transfer two pregnant women to ITU over weekend so don't sit in the comfort of your house and come out with this shit idea.
Biscuit have a fecking lorry load, you are a bloody disgrace

user68901 · 07/04/2020 12:23

bought and brought

BonnesVacances · 07/04/2020 12:25

Can I add boarder and border as that's making me feel quite stabby at the moment.

Cam77 · 07/04/2020 12:27

I don't care what people do as long as they don't write 'lose' as 'loose'.

Bubblebu · 07/04/2020 12:27

OP you could use this time to retrain as an English language teacher to school children so you never have to post a post like this again?
(unless you already are one in which case yikes for you)

suggestionsplease1 · 07/04/2020 12:27

Not grammar, but use of the word 'literal' or 'literally'.

Although I do love some of the examples of how it is used.

"The world is your literal oyster' was my favourite Grin

SoupDragon · 07/04/2020 12:27

How do you feel about people starting a sentence with “and”?

That was my immediate thought too 😂

munchbunch12 · 07/04/2020 12:28

Thanks Gingersausage and Pelleas
