Ear piercing of babies, what do you think?

Sometimes i think i live in a romany gypsy camp the number of babies i see with pierced ears and jewellery dangling from their little wrists. Having never adopted the courage to get my own ears pierced, i cant imagine piercing a little baby's ears. Its brutal and so common! What gives with this practice? In my opinion, its mutilation. The dangling bracelets are a health hazard to little ones, and i fear they could break their arms if they got them tangled in their sweaters.

What gives with this?

Good point Toothache. has anyone seen a child wearing lipstick or mascara?

duster · 01/04/2005 22:30

OK I've done the tattoo.

I'm putting the hair extensions in next.

Exactly what i just said. what kind of parents have they got. Pierced ears on babies is a reflection of the ignorance of the parent in my opinion. Its common, unecessary and gilds the lily so to speak. I dont think ear piercing makes any kind of common sense and it speaks to me of the parent just keeping up with the joneses. What does the ear piercing represent? That you have a girl baby? Or a boy baby who you want to be butch or cool or trendy. Its sick.

I would strongly dispute - from very painful experience!

Apart from that I just think it looks horrible...but apparently I am only 15% chav so perhaps I'm not the best person to comment

Hey,......... follow me, I have found an old air raid shelter. DH has promised to bring food and water and let us know when the coast is clear.

I once saw a toddler on a bus with three hoops in each ear, two gold chains around her neck and a signet ring on her finger. The worst thing was the ring because her mother plainly hadn't noticed that the ring was too small and digging into her daughter's finger. It looked very painful to me but then I suppose if it had been looser the child could have swallowed it and choked.

Tbh it made me feel quite ill. I think piercing young children is horrible anyway but this was excessive. At what point does it become child abuse?

nutcracker · 01/04/2005 22:34

Snafu - To my HORROR I was 30% Chav.... but once I had purchased a piano on Ebay and stopped travelling by bus my score fell to an acceptable level! PHEW!

Think I'll wait until Dd's earlobes are big enough to take those HUUUUUGE gold hoop earrings before getting them pierced.... otherwise, whats the point???

debs26 · 01/04/2005 22:34

yes, gold triggers the worst reaction. friend told me i was prob allergic to nickel so would be ok with surgical steel but cant cope with that either. she said i must just be wierd

Yes kama, and it is also 'a fact' that if it does happen to you it's excruciating. So I can't imagine why anyone would run the risk of putting a baby through that for purely cosmetic reasons.

I'm really surprised at this - so many people feel so strongly! I don't think I'd want my boys to have their ears peirced but I really don't have a problem with it. Don't think it's tacky/yucky/common. Lots of cultures tattoo/peirce/scar etc, dont' have a problem with that either, though Pixel's bus toddler sounds a bit much! How would you get a kid like that through airport security? What if it wandered dangerously near a magnet!!!

Evesmama · 01/04/2005 22:35

i can see how this ones gunna end up!!!

mamadadawahwah · 01/04/2005 22:36

Who said anything about you nutcracker? this is what i think about parents who pierce their babies ears. Thats my opinion. and yes i dare, cause its disgusting. There is a resounding nay on the thread about this and there is simply no justification whatsoever to do it. Remind yourself, this is my opinion and i am entitled to think it. You may be the best parent in the world, but my immediate reaction to the sight of baby piercing has been made quite clear.

Lololol toothy - i think it was the holidays to ibiza that did for me. Of course, that was long before it became eye-beef-er, don't you know...
