Ear piercing of babies, what do you think?

Sometimes i think i live in a romany gypsy camp the number of babies i see with pierced ears and jewellery dangling from their little wrists. Having never adopted the courage to get my own ears pierced, i cant imagine piercing a little baby's ears. Its brutal and so common! What gives with this practice? In my opinion, its mutilation. The dangling bracelets are a health hazard to little ones, and i fear they could break their arms if they got them tangled in their sweaters.

What gives with this?

If tatto carried out by qualified tattooist, little risk of infection, no worries about catching on threads, etc.

Kama "There is no more risk involved in a tiny stud getting caught on something than a cardigan button hole getting caught on a climbing frame, or a scarf, or a hair tie."

Eh? A cardigan button hole doesn't have an ear attached to it - unless I've been dressing DS wrong?

(Won't pierce his willy till he's out of nappies, btw - that would be CRUEL! )

I don't like it and I don't think its nessecary.
My Niece has wanted hers pierced for a long time and she got them done for her 9th Birthday. My DD's will be waiting at least that long and I will never encourage the idea.

LGJ · 01/04/2005 22:23

I had mine done at 13 and they closed up at about 20.

Can't see the point, if you will pardon the pun.

mamadadawahwah · 01/04/2005 22:23

Uh, did i say anything about you being a bad parent?

I dont know what kind of parent you are. If i see a child with a tatoo, i wonder about the parents!

Definitely a cultural thing in Spain.
I have no problem with it at all, but I don't know what I'd do if one of my boys wanted his ears pierced.
Right, now I'm off to tattoo the baby.

Nemo1977 · 01/04/2005 22:24

think its a bit harsh to say someone is a bad parent for getting their childs ears pierced at a young age..although with my mum i would agree

Xena · 01/04/2005 22:24

This as every subject on here allows everyone their opinion.

Evesmama · 01/04/2005 22:24

i have burberry in wardrobe(its a very subtle duffle coat and cost many pennies but will never where it again]

love chicken and mushroom pot noodles

used to go to blackpool every aug to see chubby brown(think that must take me up to 100%!!)

wear hoop earings(although not the size of my wrist like most!)

lurve pizza hut(went on wed for b.day)

and both me and dp got Pay & Go phones

and...

i was seven when i got my ears peirced..then got them donw twice more when got ollder(as well as adorning several ridiculous looking sovereign/coin/buckle rings)
and got my nose peirced at 16!!!

only wear one pair of earing snow(and only started doing that recently)
and had to let my nose hole close up cos of work..but really liked that, however mmost 90 yr old women round here have thiers done too

ridickularse · 01/04/2005 22:25

I don't like those single bunches on the top of the head either. They look like a Yorkshire Terriers and they look daft too!

nutcracker · 01/04/2005 22:25

Well in my opinion it smacks of ignorance, looks awful and just sends an immediate message to all and sundry, "what kind of parents has s/he got!"

so what do you mean by that then mamdada ???

Pinotmum · 01/04/2005 22:25

Although it's not my thang for my dd I have friends who have chosen otherwise and had their dd's done - these are lovely caring parents so don't agree that this makes you a bad parent.

hunkermunker · 01/04/2005 22:25

Don't like to see boys/men with earrings. Don't know why, don't apologise for it, just would prefer to see an unfettered earlobe on a man.

Allow me that small preference in this harsh world of bland we-must-love-all-people's-choices, for the love of whichever deity you worship!

LGJ · 01/04/2005 22:26

A child with a tattoo

Tell me you are joking..........please.

Nemo1977 · 01/04/2005 22:26

pmsl im 36% chav...but also like u eve had ears pierced no of times when older and had my nose done, also have 2 tattoos..

hunkermunker · 01/04/2005 22:27

(Also don't like to see bald baby girls with hairbands with enormous flowers/bows on. Think they look like mad Easter eggs.)

I accept that tomorrow will be Hang Hunker Day

Lonelymum · 01/04/2005 22:27

I would like to know why having a pay and go phone makes one a chav () Also, yeah so I pinch shower gel from hotels. Does that make me a chav? Do chavs even stay in hotels?(apart from on Ibiza) I thought chavs went to holiday camps. Ooh I am going to get some stick now!

Pinotmum · 01/04/2005 22:28

Used to fancy David Essex and his earring - corr!!

debs26 · 01/04/2005 22:28

i had mine done when i was two, got horrid infection for some unknown reason (few years after they were done) and was on antibiotics for a week, holes closed up. had them redone when i was nine, got to about thirteen and started getting bad reactions. am now allergic to all but titanium. is shame, would love some kinky piercings. wonder if allergy was because they were done so early, anyone know?

LGJ · 01/04/2005 22:28

Hunker

With you...........

LGJ

Toothache · 01/04/2005 22:28

I think when I see children that aren't even walking wearing earrings I just crrrrringe!! It's awful, tacky and not their choice!!

Isnt' the wearing of earrings a vanity thing?? Like wearing make-up. I wear earrings, had my ears pierced at 11 coz I ASKED to have them done. Its a fashion thing in this country.... and I wouldn't dye my babies hair or make them wear make-up.... so, therefore wouldn't get their ears pierced until they were old enough to decide to have them donw (whenever THAT is).

But babies??? NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!

Mud · 01/04/2005 22:29
