Ear piercing of babies, what do you think?

Sometimes i think i live in a romany gypsy camp the number of babies i see with pierced ears and jewellery dangling from their little wrists. Having never adopted the courage to get my own ears pierced, i cant imagine piercing a little baby's ears. Its brutal and so common! What gives with this practice? In my opinion, its mutilation. The dangling bracelets are a health hazard to little ones, and i fear they could break their arms if they got them tangled in their sweaters.

What gives with this?

debs26, was your friend's dd really only six weeks?

Lonelymum · 01/04/2005 22:15

Kama, why don't you wait until she is old enough to ask for them to be done? It would only be a year or two later than you are planning to do it anyway, and at least then she has a choice in the decision.

Kama, there are dangers involved. Well, risks at the very least. Risk of infection, to begin with. Risk of earring getting caught on something and ripping a chunk of your child's ear off

my mum got my ears pierced at 6mths old but personally I would wait until my child was old enough to decide themselves if they wanted it. My mum also had my sisters done at about one but the youngest sister was 7 when she had hers done.

nutcracker · 01/04/2005 22:16

Claires accesories will do them at 4mths old i think. I'm sure thats what a friend told me.

debs26 · 01/04/2005 22:16

really. friend was almost in tears. i asked her why and she didnt seem to know herself, except that she wanted some earrings from argos for a christening present.

Errr, I'm not comparing mutilating girls genitailia to some Asian familes piercing their daughters ears, just want to make that clear.

nutcracker · 01/04/2005 22:17

It said i was a potential Chav. Must of been cos i couldn't answer no to the Trisha question.

hunkermunker · 01/04/2005 22:17

Am tempted to get DS's nose done though - through the middle. Or perhaps his eyebrow? Looks SO cute, dontcha think?

Mud · 01/04/2005 22:17

I think its foul and disgusting. little girls are beautiful enough without the addition of jewellry or peirced ears. I think it looks amazingly common.

mamadadawahwah · 01/04/2005 22:19

Well in my opinion it smacks of ignorance, looks awful and just sends an immediate message to all and sundry, "what kind of parents has s/he got!"

At my dd's nursery the teacher is lways asking parents to remove their dd's ear rings or at least put in studs. I know the majority are done for cultural reasons at the nursery but still common sense would tell you not to send them in with hoops.

mamadadawahwah · 01/04/2005 22:19

Ha, i can understand an earring through dh's nose. with a big rope through it too for easy maneouvering/!

I won't be allowign my DD to get her ears peirced til she is 13 if she wants it done. That was when I had mine doen and it was a 'becoming a teenager' thing.

LGJ · 01/04/2005 22:21

Hunker

Just get his willy pierced and be done with it.

mamadadawahwah · 01/04/2005 22:21

Hell, lets get our wee babies tatooed as well. M U M and D A D on each hand.
