MIL bought baby boy doll with willy for my DD

I am pregnant and expecting a baby boy. MIL (very kindly) bought a baby doll with a very obvious willy… in preparation?

I don’t think my DD who is 3 needs to understand the anatomy of her little brother yet until I say so? She hasn’t been asking about private parts yet let alone little boys?!

When I saw her she then finally said ‘I hope it was ok to give it to her’… is it just me or is this odd?

DH said it was a good idea to ‘prepare her’ but I think the opposite? Am I being a bit OTT? 🤦🏻‍♀️

You are being OTT. Children should know the real names of private parts and simply that no one should be going near them, except for safe adults helping with the toilet (PANTS advice).

My niece was hilarious when she said 'penis' in her squeaky little 2-3 year voice 😂

I’m going to go touch grass. That’s enough Internet for me.

I had a tiny timmy from being about 2 and he had a tiny willy and i never thought anything of it. Youre massively OTT

My (prudish!) nana bought my sister a doll with a willy for my sister years ago without realising. My sister was the same age as your daughter and I was a year older ("Irish twins") and I remember being a right gobshite declaring that it was clearly a boy doll. My nana was like, no it's not, it's a girl, so I took it upon myself to prove it and there it was. Little Stephanie became a David and my nana was mortified! 😂😂😂

We were all girls in my mum's family, until I had two boys. Your MIL had at least one son so she's used to things like that so probably didn't consider it an issue!

Blablibladirladada · 08/12/2025 18:24

Did she actually trying to prepare your daughter of 3?? Oh my, people are…crazyyyy!

Missingpop · 08/12/2025 18:29

Goodness you’ve led a sheltered life almost all dolls have the anatomy on them now; I work in a nursery & all of the dolls have there bits & bobs we even have dolls with obvious learning disabilities; heck we gave black & Asian ones too!!

OhMyMirror · 08/12/2025 18:31

I'm almost 40 and my first baby doll was a boy with a wee willy. I got him for my 2nd birthday, 2 weeks after my brother was born funnily enough. His name is Andrew, I still have him. All of my kids have played with him over the past 18 years and he's still going strong.

I think she just bought her a “boy” baby doll to enthuse her about having a brother, rather than buying her a “penis” doll to prepare her for the sight of a penis.

What's crazy about buying a boy doll for a child who's about to have a brother? That seems really normal to me!

Monty34 · 08/12/2025 18:48

What is a bit odd is that she purchased it. Then felt she was unsure, but continued to give it.
People managed for decades with boy dolls without willies. And this may be what was going through her mind.
I doubt it will be an issue. As for 'preparing her' I mean honestly. If you grow up with a baby brother you get to see his willy. And know he has one and you don't. It isn't an issue unless parents choose to make one out of it.
You don't need a dolly to 'prepare' you.

We definitely had dolls with willies in the 80s!

ThatAgileRosePanda · 08/12/2025 18:52

She has actually been very thoughtful and not inappropriate.

TheIceBear · 08/12/2025 18:53

For goodness sake who cares. I remember a girl in my class having that tiny tears “Timmy” doll when I was in school. It had a willy. I don’t understand the concern.

You may well have done. There will be many who grew up without them.

Some people never had dolls at all, not sure what your point is?

She shouldn’t be seeing either of your genitals 😡

I agree i dont understand the nakedness around kids.

However op its just a doll.

You posted that people had such dolls in the 80's. I don't doubt it.
There will many people who did not grow up with dollies with willies as they were uncommon in the decades prior to the 1980's.

Granny in this post may be one of those that did not.

But they won’t be the people having children now? Anyone of an age to be giving birth will have grown up when boy dolls - except Ken and Action Man - had willies.

Reminds me of my sister at that age seeing my brother getting bathed and asked what his penis was. My mum said “that’s what god give little boys to go to the toilet with”. She give a disgusted look and said “It’s as well he didn’t put in on his face”! At least she’ll be prepared!

My post explains the Granny may not have. She hesitated and was not sure if she should have given the doll.
This is not complicated !

Not all doll have the sexe defined first of all and I think it is bizarre to think that a 3years old girl needs to be prepared at the sight of a baby penis.
There is nothing to prepare…is my point.

she got a baby boy dolly cos she's having a baby brother.

why wouldn't it have a willy?

Yes I wouldn’t want that, I don’t think baby girl dolls have such detailed parts do they? I don’t really change baby in front of the other children, can’t stand those books or tv shows that make a huge fuss over nappy changes and saying how stinky it is etc. It’s very vulgar and you wouldn’t talk like that if it was an elderly or disabled person having their incontinence pad changed. kids don’t need to have anything to do with nappy changes

Edited

No you shouldn’t make a big deal of changing nappies, but you can’t always leave the room every time a nappy gets changed. Poor child will feel abandoned.
