MIL bought baby boy doll with willy for my DD

I am pregnant and expecting a baby boy. MIL (very kindly) bought a baby doll with a very obvious willy… in preparation?

I don’t think my DD who is 3 needs to understand the anatomy of her little brother yet until I say so? She hasn’t been asking about private parts yet let alone little boys?!

When I saw her she then finally said ‘I hope it was ok to give it to her’… is it just me or is this odd?

DH said it was a good idea to ‘prepare her’ but I think the opposite? Am I being a bit OTT? 🤦🏻‍♀️

I think the real issue is, it’s your call what yor daughter sees and knows not your mil’s. Has she overstepped before

Would you say the same if mil bought a girl doll for a grandson?

I do care about these things and would have taken the doll straight off your daughter and told the MIL it was inappropriate. But I don't subscribe to this woke let it all hang out and keep nothing from children from the outset nonsense.

Goodness me, it is a part of the body, a part of the body that 50% of people have.

In other countries the human body is accepted not hidden, creating secrecy.
Naked saunas, appropriate language used for body parts, a much more relaxed and open attitude.

BauhausOfEliott · 07/12/2025 11:12

OP, she’s going to see her baby brother naked all the time. There’s absolutely no reason why she shouldn’t know what boys and girls look like. It’s normal for children to understand that boys and girls are different.

You make some really good points. If poor old grandpa was having his pads/diaper changed, you wouldn't have little children watching, would you. If it was me, I certainly wouldn't want my grandchildren gathered around and being grossed out by it. It should be private as possible, no matter the age.

Exactly, I know babies are unlikely to feel undignified by it in the same way but this isn’t a good example to be showing children of how we treat anyone. I always used to skip the pages in the Topsy and Tim books that had the children showing their digust that the poor baby had bodily functions and can’t stand it when my DH makes such a song and dance about a nappy change. Why can’t it just be done quietly and discreetly with as little fuss as possible

Why on earth would she be seeing him naked all the time, mine don’t see each other naked and only the baby if they happen to walk in at bathtime

I think people are actually saying YABU.

I think it is great - much better than the dolls we had with simply a rounded off shape at the front with maybe the merest hint of a butt crack.

What I wouldn't do is point it out - any more than you would his shoulders or neck etc. Just answer straight if she asks and get on with life. I actually think, provided it is all introduced without great fanfare, it was a really thoughtful idea of MIL.

I agree and if the daughter had had an older brother they would likely have been put in the bath together and she'd know what little boys look like anyway.

Goldwren1923 · 07/12/2025 11:18

You are very prudish

it’s a great present

are you Amish or something?
You think your daughter womt see you changing your son’s nappy?

I was embarrassingly old before I knew the outer bit was the vulva and it was only when teaching Sex ed with Year Two children about boys and girls being different that I actually looked at the vocab list and twigged. There has to be something wrong with a society where a woman in her 30s who is pregnant with her first child doesn't know what her own body parts are called! So absolutely no need for foo foo or twinkles or any of that crap (or twinky winkys ewwww).

What did it really matter if you know the exact anatomical word for each part of the genitalia?
it’s just a man made up word to identify a body part? Sure you don’t get so hung up on knowing all the exact anatomical parts of the rest of your body unless your doing a biology exam

JFDIYOLO · 07/12/2025 11:49

Why should we teach children anatomically correct language?

6 7 GIF

Her reason is odd, I don’t think she needs preparing. But I wouldn’t mind a doll with a penis. My daughter (3) has a doll with a vulva. Not just a hole.

no idea how I added a gif ha ha!!!

VikaOlson · 07/12/2025 11:54

I'm a childminder and our baby dolls have either a penis or a vulva - no parent has complained yet! 😂

MouseTheDog · 07/12/2025 12:13

I’ve only read the first couple of pages so apologies if it’s been asked but…if it didn’t have a willy how would it be any different to the dolls she already has? Literally the only visual difference between a boy baby and girl baby is the penis?

Loveapineapplepizzame · 07/12/2025 12:17

Totally overthinking. There’s loads of nurseries that have these anatomical dolls

I bought my then aged 9yr old DD some of the Schleich horses for Christmas one year - lots of giggles from her bedroom when she discovered a lot of the horses had full balls and a penis on them!

GammonAndEgg · 07/12/2025 12:20

DD had a doll like this and called it Baby Willy 🤣🤣

It would be more woke to pretend that under their clothes all people are the same and people or parents just choose to either wear clothes and act as a girl or a boy.

That would be stupid but how would it be 'woke'? People seem to be using 'woke' to refer to anything they don't like. It's really annoying.

CatchTheWind1920 · 07/12/2025 13:19

It's just a body part. Eventually she will ask when she realises boys have something different...she's not far away from the age where they start all the questions.

are you ok with increasing your children’s risk of being abused then? And decreasing their ability to seek help if it were to happen. Some people have very strange priorities!

EvangelicalAboutButteredToast · 07/12/2025 13:27

Well that depends. How odd does it look?

That's weird. It happened the other day to a poster as well - and the gif had the number 67 in it like that as well.

You’re concerned about allowing your daughter to see a plastic tinky winky but not an adult man’s penis.
There are a lot of ways to make sure you don’t expose yourself to your children there’s really no excuse other than you don’t care

And why should she care?

CurlewKate · 07/12/2025 16:33

Can someone who would object to this doll explain why?

Trendyname · 07/12/2025 16:39

AlwaysHopefull89 · 06/12/2025 23:23

For the Willy element specifically I think… DD has loads of dolls already but without a willy element (not delibrate just the ones she wanted over Xmas and birthdays)

Edited

Is this some sort of education / training doll for your dd?

The biggest reason it matters is because children not knowing the names of their genitals is a safeguarding issue. Children are less likely and able to disclose serious sex abuse if they are embarrassed about talking about their body parts (which is what we teach them when we use silly nicknames) and if they don't have accurate language to describe what's happened to them.

Women who are embarrassed of their body parts and don't have the language to comfortably label them are less likely to seek medical attention for reproductive health issues. Women literally die of embarrassment every year because they feel too ashamed to see a GP before it's too late. Men too.

But more broadly, if you're going to say "why does it matter?", then why does anything matter? Why do we bother having words for things in any context? Every word is "man made up".

BeMellowAquaSquid · 07/12/2025 18:43

I had a boy doll in the 80s with a willy and as far as I can recall I’ve been left with no obvious signs of trauma

I mean I don't need to know my elbow is called the humeroulnar joint but I do probably need to know it's not my upper arm or my hand?!
