MIL bought baby boy doll with willy for my DD

I am pregnant and expecting a baby boy. MIL (very kindly) bought a baby doll with a very obvious willy… in preparation?

I don’t think my DD who is 3 needs to understand the anatomy of her little brother yet until I say so? She hasn’t been asking about private parts yet let alone little boys?!

When I saw her she then finally said ‘I hope it was ok to give it to her’… is it just me or is this odd?

DH said it was a good idea to ‘prepare her’ but I think the opposite? Am I being a bit OTT? 🤦🏻‍♀️

When my DD was 3 she literally asked for a baby doll with a willy for Xmas. She thought it was hilarious because she has brothers. In a normal, everyday household, she's going to see willies! Especially when the new baby is a toddler and runs around half naked for half of his day. Or is that just my kids....?!

Jesus get a life ConfusedConfused DH took her to the toilet in a cubicle!! Rather that than allow her to stand outside on her own at 3!! Ridiculous comment.

You’re concerned about allowing your daughter to see a plastic tinky winky but not an adult man’s penis.
There are a lot of ways to make sure you don’t expose yourself to your children there’s really no excuse other than you don’t care

She shouldn’t be seeing either of your genitals 😡

Are you joking? Did you never take a bath or shower with your baby or toddler? Did you ban your young children from your presence every time you got dressed or undressed? Please don’t say you see something sexual about your young children seeing their parents’ bodies! Everyone makes their own choices but I can’t help but think a child raised in that kind of repressed environment would grow up with some pretty unhealthy views about their bodies. Even more importantly s/he would probably have a very hard time speaking up if s/he were being touched inappropriately.

Tinky winky?

How do Teletubbies come into this?

Halfquarterbag · 06/12/2025 23:28

Can’t you cut it off the doll?

Actually laughed aloud at this.

ItsameLuigi · 06/12/2025 23:31

My kids had a jigsaw when they were toddlers that had body parts on (from lidl- it was like the skeleton muscles organs etc) and my daughter wasn't traumatized by the willy. It's very good to teach them body parts and their correct names.

Tiswa · 06/12/2025 23:31

@AlwaysHopefull89 if she is having a younger brother she probably needs to get used to it!

DS used to strip off for years!

Children being around parents while toileting/ washing/ dressing etc is perfectly normal and healthy when children are as small as ops. In fact during potty training you're literally encouraged to let them see you using the loo.

🤣🤣🤣 you’re joking right

Bubbles332 · 06/12/2025 23:40

I used to teach EYFS and those types of dolls are actually better than the ones with the weird cloth bodies because you can do better large doll play with them. You can give them a bath/ top and tail them and towel them down etc without them getting all soggy.

What happens when you go swimming with a toddler? You surely don't go home in a wet costume!

Onefortheroad25 · 06/12/2025 23:47

Baby boys have willies. She’s going to see this soon when she’s ’helping’ you change her baby brother. No big deal. It’s good the doll looks the same.

ClassicalQueen · 06/12/2025 23:48

It’s a bit OTT, she will see the real thing one day. The ones we have in our EYFS unit at school have lifelike anatomy as well so she is likely to see something similar when she gets to school.

Divebar2021 · 07/12/2025 00:25

There are some very weird people around aren’t there?

Anyway OP of it helps I can remember those boy dolls being around in the 70’s and I dare say from before then. I don’t think anyone thought anything of it.

HoppingPavlova · 07/12/2025 00:41

This is not new. When my adult kids were young we had those Baby Born dolls that ate/drank and sat on a potty to wee. The boy dolls had penis they wee’d out of. It wasn’t that deep.

I was a bit unsure about this element until one day nursery had a stay play session for parents and my dd picked up the naked boy doll and matter of fact said ‘I’ll play with the boy baby then’. No issue just normal/ natural which I would want so unless there is a backstory about mil I think there is no issue.

selffellatingouroborosofhate · 07/12/2025 01:29

Did your MIL buy this? If not, then it's probably OK.

A more serious point: a substantial barrier to me disclosing sexual assault as a primary-aged girl was a lack of permissable vocabulary to describe the relevant anatomy. That part of my body had school yard "naughty" words to describe it but, in terms of words that I could repeat to adults without being told off, it was very much nameless. Your DD needs to know "vulva" to describe her external genitalia and "penis" to describe her brother's, for good safeguarding reasons.
