How much do you 'ignore' your children?

Have just been out with two families - friends of ours- who have kids about the same age, and I have to confess, I am amzed by the extent to which they actively 'ignore' their children trhoughout the whole afternoon.

By this I mean they seem to 'zone out' from all the various requests/ questions/ constant 'to-ing and fro-ing' that seems typical of under- 6s??

As a result they actively seem to enjoy themselves more, manage to have 'adult' conversations (which I gave up years ago )and it seems that their kids eventually give up and go and sort out themselves whatever it is they want....( which seems like a good thing I suppose)

I can't decide whether I'm just a mug with my kids and let them dominate my life too much... but I simply CAN'T ignore them - it seems really rude and uncaring somehow??

I loke mathamoo's "Lord of the Flies" analogy.

And custardo put it much more sccunctly than me in her post of 1:26pm.

I'd have still iked to see a genuine debate on what Gameboy initially posted about. I am "guilty" of ignoring ds on many an occasion, and do sometimes feel guilty about it - but am not sure if I should, IYSWIM, as ds seems to be an extremely happy, self-confident and assured wee boy.

Not sure whether it is because as an older mother (I'm 44) I am more "naturally" selfish - or whether I am just naturaly self centred?!

STOP POSTING TILL I GET BACK!!!!

donnie · 12/09/2005 15:06

this thread is freaking weird.......

steffee · 12/09/2005 15:22

Vaunda, you're right, the topic on this thread has turned pathetic and tedious, but I was not causing trouble and resent you implying I was. I genuinely thought you had insinuated that Marslady's nephew was a bully because that was the subject at the time you made your comment. You could merely have said I was wrong, without going on to insult me.

It seems as though you've been on this thread all day long, do you work? And does your dh work? (you said you might send him to pick up your ds from school)...

QueenOfQuotes · 12/09/2005 15:23

QueenOfQuotes · 12/09/2005 15:33

suedonim · 12/09/2005 15:36

SecondhandRose · 12/09/2005 15:55

We're not talking about the kid who was on Terry Wogan with the bow tie, collected antiques and wanted to be PM when he grew up are we?

Kelly1978 · 12/09/2005 15:56

I am beginning to wonder if Vaunda is just the cleverest troll ever.

GeraldGiraffe · 12/09/2005 15:57

SHR- comparisons have been made i think

SecondhandRose · 12/09/2005 15:59

Hey GG - My DS came top of the class in a spellings test last week but I'm not bragging.

GeraldGiraffe · 12/09/2005 15:59

BEGINNING to wonder? She is clearly either up in the clouds with the fairies and has lost all touch with reality or she is a troll troll troll. i'm inclined to believe the latter, as she has so patiently posted back on here under attack. i'd have scarpered if i had been a newish mner with that much aggro.

SecondhandRose · 12/09/2005 16:04

Isn't that boy off Wogan now called Vanessa or something? Very pretty though.

GeraldGiraffe · 12/09/2005 16:04
Grin
Kelly1978 · 12/09/2005 16:05

lol. I just thought she was exaggerating and a little out of touch to begin with.
