How much do you 'ignore' your children?

Have just been out with two families - friends of ours- who have kids about the same age, and I have to confess, I am amzed by the extent to which they actively 'ignore' their children trhoughout the whole afternoon.

By this I mean they seem to 'zone out' from all the various requests/ questions/ constant 'to-ing and fro-ing' that seems typical of under- 6s??

As a result they actively seem to enjoy themselves more, manage to have 'adult' conversations (which I gave up years ago )and it seems that their kids eventually give up and go and sort out themselves whatever it is they want....( which seems like a good thing I suppose)

I can't decide whether I'm just a mug with my kids and let them dominate my life too much... but I simply CAN'T ignore them - it seems really rude and uncaring somehow??

not even all mners who I msn with dont know which schools my kids go to. they know their christian names but not even their full surname

MarsLady · 12/09/2005 00:30

well it probably wouldn't help if I told you to look out for the large black woman with the booming laugh now would it? Especially as the school is full of black children lol. Anyway, I would need her permission to describe her fully and say who she is. I have you here, so I can get something from you and then she could introduce herself and I won't be in trouble with her for indentifying her to a complete stranger.

QueenOfQuotes · 12/09/2005 00:32

I won't

Vaunda · 12/09/2005 00:33

well i for one have had enough of the idiotic comments being thrown at me. I will bring my son up the way i see fit and if nobody else likes it then tough crap. I do a bloody fine job with my son and always have done. He is totally spoilt and will continue to be so. He goes to a great school and i am proud of everythign he does. He is not a perfect child or fantastic at everything. He does excel at a lot of things and I am within my rights as his p arent to be proud of this and talk about it without idiotic doubting from others. After all this is a free country.

QueenOfQuotes · 12/09/2005 00:34

ooooooooo she's finally craked [wonk]

MarsLady · 12/09/2005 00:34

don't go vaunda... you haven't told me how I can get my sister to identify you.

I'm not bothered how you choose to bring up your son, apart from my earlier post about remembering that he is a child for such a short time. But I really do want to meet you now.

jampots · 12/09/2005 00:35

Mars- she's the white one

Vaunda · 12/09/2005 00:36

Marslady fine if you want to meet me tell me when and where and well do so. But lets leave the kids out of this eh?

Vaunda · 12/09/2005 00:37

QoQ i haven't cracked i am off to watch a dvd. KISS live in Las Vegas...... ohhhh as i am such a liar and cause so much doubt maybe KISS don't exist or maybe they never played Las Vegas in 1999

sparklymieow · 12/09/2005 00:37

MY son is disabled, and he is a well mannered boy. He had a reading age 2 1/2 years above his actual age, his spelling is 2 years above and his maths is 2 1/4 years above his age. He does very well, but he is a child and I treat him as one. He plays with children his own age, all of them without disabilities (apart from his sister) And yes I ignore him sometimes but he is old enough to entertain himself and I have 2 younger dds to see too.

MarsLady · 12/09/2005 00:37

but there may be other white ones. She said that there were 3 mixed race children in her son's class.

I wanted to meet her. I bet my sister would love her!

Vaunda · 12/09/2005 00:39

ohhh mars if thats meant to be a threat/insult/ or a form of saying my sister and i would ridicule you well hres 30p go tell someone who cares but as i said lets leave the kids out of this eh?

MarsLady · 12/09/2005 00:39

excellent! Shall I come to Camberwell or would you rather meet in the middle of London?

But why won't you tell me what you look like so that my sister can make sure that I'm not meeting an axe murderer?

ghosty · 12/09/2005 00:39

I have just spent 2 HOURS ignoring my 19 month old daughter trying to catch up with everything I missed while NZ was sleeping ... 2 HOURS ladies ... she has eaten crisps and popcorn and I put the DVD on repeat play
So I have been roaring with laughter ... growling with anger (Jimjams, just say the word and I will go for it all guns blazing .... Gangster voice "You mess wid my pal Jimjams, you mess wid me!" ) PS ... love the photo of my little mate btw ...
Shaking my head in amazement at the RBS etc ...
So I get to the end ... go back to active convos and no less than 100 more posts have come up ...

Sigh .... more popcorn darling?

Vaunda · 12/09/2005 00:40

how about the silver buckle in camberwell green or maybe mcdonalds your choice.

QueenOfQuotes · 12/09/2005 00:40

PMSL - craked? [wonk]?? think I meant Cracked and

MarsLady · 12/09/2005 00:40

no threat. Sorry I have dial up and so the page takes ages to post a message and by the time my message comes up half a dozen have gotten in the way.

I don't remember asking to meet your son though! Just you!

Vaunda · 12/09/2005 00:42

no mars but you are going to get your older nephew to look out for him hmmmmm all innocent is it?

as i said you decide Mcdonalds or the silver buckle in cambrwell green

MarsLady · 12/09/2005 00:42

ooh I don't do McDonalds. Don't know the pub (I think it's a pub) you mentioned. Remember it is my sister that lives down south, not me. lol.

How about Starbucks in Marble Arch? Then we can both get back in time for school pickup?

QueenOfQuotes · 12/09/2005 00:43

she didn't say she was going to get the nephew to beat him up FGS!

And he can't be that much older - no more than 4yrs!

Vaunda · 12/09/2005 00:43

Ghosty,
if you have a problem with something i have said to jimjams then please do tell i am all ears or rather as this is a screen i am all eyes.

jampots · 12/09/2005 00:43

vaunda - you're insinuating that Mars nephew is someone threatening your ds - which knowing mars is not the case at all. She comes from a very caring and decent family.
