Welcome to the new thread ladies! I have put it in here as we have been dicussing the films and the books, so didn't think it fitted fully into the book/film section!

Have found something to wonder about for once.

In HP1 when harry and hagrid have been to diagon alley why does harry get a train back to the dursleys house from paddington when they live in Surrey?

The thought struck me during reading to DS last night

weegiemum · 06/08/2009 15:35

I'm going to see the film tonight!!!

In OOTP, at Harry's "Careers Advice" interview, he is told by professor McGonagall that if he wants to be an Auror he will need NEWTs in about 5 subjects.

So has JKR contradicted herself by saying he doesn't go back to school but does become an Auror? Or do they let him into Auror training because he killed Voldemort and is therefore very good at defence against the dark arts?

But doesn't that mean Quirrel wasn't possessed at all, just a host to a parasitic Voldemort?

oooh Stayfrosty... that was very good detective work. well done you win the medal on the Quirral question.

ITD, JK lives in scotland, or she did when she wrote PS. I wouldnt have a clue either, what trains go from which station as Ive only been to London 4 times in my whole life. Did trains go to Surrey from Paddington in 1997?

LovingTheRain · 06/08/2009 19:18

I'm out! Wahooo

I have a HBP film question!! When SLughorn was cutting those leaves and putting them into his pot, "purely for educational purposes", what did he really want them for?

OP posts:
teamcullen · 06/08/2009 19:30

He wanted them to sell. they where very valuable, just like Aragog's venim.

greensnail · 06/08/2009 20:25

weegiemum I'm sure they would have thought that killing voldemort was as good preparation for being an auror as you could get and so let him off having the actual qualifications.

teamcullen · 06/08/2009 22:09

yes and considering half the aurors are dead they would probably be having a recrutment drive.

MotherPi · 06/08/2009 23:35

Wee-ll, I saw the film and am not sure what to make of it.

It seemed a bit flat.

May need to go again

LovingTheRain · 07/08/2009 13:31

Yes go again MotherPi!! I enjoyed it more the second time. But I loved it the first time also!!

I think after the final battle Harry and the rest would have gone back to Hogwarts to complete their Newts.

Anyway I think he would have got sick of all the excitement and would not have bothered becoming an auror. He probably ended up as a tax consultant.

GetOrfMoiLand · 07/08/2009 13:41

What I want to know is why Fleur and Bill got married at the Burrow and not at the bride's home.

LovingTheRain · 07/08/2009 15:09

GetOrfMoiLand - Harry and Ron didn't, but Hermione did!

I think they got married at the burrow as it was a familiar setting for readers, plus probably safer from Harry, Ron and Hermione who possibly had to leave at any time!

It was because it was safer for Harry, they said so in the book.

LovingTheRain · 07/08/2009 21:05

I wondered that too Riven!
How they were allowed to use it out of school in some cases.

Was that rule just for Harry Bumper?

OP posts:
greensnail · 07/08/2009 21:13

I think they probably kept a closer eye on Harry than other students. There's also a reference that Petunia makes to Lily having done magic during school holidays. So it obviously does go on.

If students aren't muggle born then it would be hard for the ministry to know who is doing the magic in their house. Also, before they start school young wizards are prone to accidentally doing magic, so maybe Hermione got off because of this.
