Welcome to the new thread ladies! I have put it in here as we have been dicussing the films and the books, so didn't think it fitted fully into the book/film section!

The Ministry of magic can only detect magic being done, not who actually does it. So when Harry performs magic at the Dursley's, he is the only wizard in the vicinity so they assume it is him who is doing it. That is how he gets blamed for Dobbie's spell.

If there is lots of magic going on, at the Burrow or in Diagon Alley for example, the ministry cannot ascribe spells to any particular person.

Also, very young children cannot control their magic. So when Harry vanishes the glass, it is unintentional so he does not get into trouble. But by age 11 when they go to Hogwarts, the children are expected to be able to behave.

I wondered about Hermione practicing spells too so perhaps she was practicing on the train or in Diagon Alley or even possibly practicing at home before she got her letter.

Do I qualify for geekdom too?

LovingTheRain · 07/08/2009 21:23

Riven, you are truly a HP expert! Maybe they don't do magic at the Burrow because Mrs Weasley would tell them off and as she can be scarier than the Ministry sometimes...

Here's a list of mistakes in the books. Might make for interesting reading.

Yes, I think they rely on parents to police this for them - and I think Mrs Weasley would take this responsibility seriously

LongtimeinBrussels · 08/08/2009 12:57

Riven, no need for the , should be a !

Parent are supposed to police their children from doing magic. It says so in the book. Ron said he couldnt see the malfoys stopping Draco, but Mrs. W was a stickler for the rules and wouldnt let them.

I think muggle borns wouldnt know they cant use magic out of school before they start, because it doesnt tell them in the letter. So the ministry wouldnt punnish them.

greensnail · 08/08/2009 20:29

Oh now there's a great question Riven.

They never seem to speak, but maybe its more that they generally choose not to speak, but can if needed.

daffodill6 · 08/08/2009 20:52

Getorf and Lovintherain - But where will they set the wedding in the DH pt 1 ?? The Burrows was burnt down in the HBP film but not in the book??????

GodzillasBumcheek · 08/08/2009 21:14

There wouldn't be human guards there as well cuz they'd go bonkers too?

LovingTheRain · 08/08/2009 22:38

I think it will be repaired by magic for the next film! I also have it on very good authority that the Weasley's house will be used for atleast one other scene involving Harry and possibly others!

I have Question from the GOF movie. At the end, Hermione says "Everything is going to change now isn't it?". Two questions.

  1. Was this line in the book?
  2. What do you think she meant? I was thinking maybe along the lines of them growing up/relationships etc. What did you think?

I have some more questions but wonders if anyone knows the answer to my GOF question?

rain I cant remember the exact wording from the book .. but Hermoine certainly said something like this if not these exact words

I think she just meant that the wisarding world was going to become a very scary and sad place to be in the next few years

LovingTheRain · 09/08/2009 19:24

Ah okay. Thanks Frasersmummy

DD and I are now up to Order of the phoenix. When Mad-eye looks into the cabinet in Grimmauld place, how does he know that it is a boggart in there since no-one knows what shape a boggart is hwen it is in its hiding place?

Heated · 09/08/2009 22:09

Find the last 3 novels a much better read with judicious use of a thick black marker pen; which is what her bloody editor should have done.

LovingTheRain · 09/08/2009 22:20

After finishing HP1 today, I have a few questions

The first, well it isn't really a question, more of an observation.

At the beginning of chapter 16: Through the trap door, The words read
"In years to come, Harry would never quite remember how he managed to get through his exams".
Now, surely, for the observant reader, this is not just a throw away comment. JKR said right from the start she knew what was going to happen at the end of book 7. Do you think she put it there for that reason? Obviously is no use to a reader when read alone, but if one were to re-read this comment during the later books, it does appear to suggest that indeed Harry would live all along!

Question in next post!

Question was, Who Owled Dumbledore to go to the ministry of magic near the end of book 1? Was it a hoax summons? We know that when he got there he realised he needed to be back at the place in 'which he had just left' so was wondering if it was Quirrell who sent that owl under Voldermort's instruction?

OP posts:
greensnail · 09/08/2009 22:45

LovingTheRain Its 7 years from the first book to the last, it could be interpreted as in years to come, but before the end of the series...
I always assumed it was Quirrel who sent the owl to get Dumbledore to the ministry.

Pacific I think Lupin was wrong when he said no-one knows what shape the Boggart takes when its hiding, because Mad-Eye knows (but maybe he hasn't told anyone ). Either that or the Boggart knows its being looked at so changes.

Hmm, am I just making excuses for JKR?

LovingTheRain · 09/08/2009 22:46

greensnail - I did think that, but in years to come sounds like a lot of years away!

OP posts:
greensnail · 09/08/2009 22:55

yes, i suppose being 17 does seem a long way away when you're 11 though. Or being 11 seems a long time ago when you're 17.

GodzillasBumcheek · 11/08/2009 19:00

Mad-eye would have known it was a boggart because it would have assumed the shape of whatever he most feared, innit

LovingTheRain · 14/08/2009 20:41

Anyone still reading? I am on POA at the moment
