Welcome to the new thread ladies! I have put it in here as we have been dicussing the films and the books, so didn't think it fitted fully into the book/film section!

I figured that Avada Kedavra thing out all my myself

sayanything · 04/08/2009 10:40

Wow, you are a fount of knowledge! Thanks Felix and Weegie

LovingTheRain · 04/08/2009 10:47

The world of HP is so complex, I have no idea how JKR can keep all those her ideas in her head for so many years and not get things wrong!

I would love to sit down with her and ask her a billion few questions I would like the answers to!

Re: Bellatrix at Shell Cottage - yes, you could well be right Sassy - I hadn't thought of that. She looks in a terrible mood though!

Re: Sirius' motorbike - Hagrid was 'looking after' it for Sirius, I think: because of course, if there was a huge magical motorbike going begging, Hagrid would want it!

teamcullen · 04/08/2009 15:04

my DCs all lisened to all the HP series on audio book. Stephen Fry reads them really well. The only thing is when we got the DH I took the last 2 CDs out of the box cos my DS wanted to see who died. I ve never been able to find them since.

Amazon sell the books in several languages. I bought DD Harry Potter & PH for christmas in spanish. Her spanish teacher has borrowed it now.

LovingTheRain · 04/08/2009 17:35

I got DD1 the casettes of the first two years ago. She used to listen to them at night

OOOOH I am going to see the film tomorrow!

The first time I have been to the cinema in about two years (too many small children).

It is going to cost me a fortune as I have to pay a childminder to look after both of them, but I am sure it is going to be worth it.

Sorry to digress from the point of the thread, just was so excited I had to share...

LovingTheRain · 04/08/2009 19:34

Enjoy it HumphreyCobbler I've seen it twice now and is my favourite film of the series

It is definitely Hermione disguised as Bellatrix at Shell Cottage. The photo I saw she was pointing her wand at Ron - this was indeed to transform him before going to Gringott's.

Weegiemum, yes all the books are available in French. We have the first three because ds2 took to reading in English later than ds1 but by the time the GoF came out he wanted to read it in English. With dd (10 years younger than ds1 and 8 years younger than ds2) I took both copies of PS and told her to read a page or two of both and choose which one she wanted to read. Although her French reading is more fluent, she preferred the English one for the names and specific vocab, so is working her way slowly through it!

Went to see HBP again today to take a friend's daughter (parents going through a horrible separation). The missing bits and added bits didn't annoy me quite as much as I knew what to expect so I think it might grow on me once I've been subjected to it numerous times (it'll be top of dd's Christmas list if it's out by then!!).

LovingTheRain · 04/08/2009 21:13

Ladies, am I the only one who is getting quite worried that these last 2 films won't do the books justice? I am really hoping they will but I am a little worried all the same!

Re Sirius' motorbike - Sirius went to the Potter's house after he found that Pettigrew had gone missing, and discovered the house had been blown up. He wanted to take Harry, as he was his godfather but Hagrid wouldn't let him as he was under instructions from Dumbledore to take Harry to him at Privet Drive. Sirius then gave the motorbike to Hagrid to get Harry there safely - saying he wouldn't need it anymore.

Im currently reading the 3rd book to my 7 month old DD as she likes me to sit and read to her while she's going to sleep. Its getting to be quite slow work though as she's settling quite quickly at the moment. Am worried that by the time i get to the last book she'll be able to understand what I'm saying and get scared!

Pacific · 04/08/2009 21:43

I have re-read all the books over the last week or so. Now I have a question. Voldemort knows the prophecy and knows that he must kill Harry by his own hand but at the end of PS he tells Quirrell to kill Harry. Why does Voldy do this when he already knows the prophecy?

LovingTheRain · 04/08/2009 22:00

pacific - I think as Voldermort had almost become part of Quirrell, if Quirrell had done it, it would have counted as Voldermort doing it as he was in control of Quirrell IYSWIM. I'm sure someone else will come along soon with their take on it, but that is what I would assume it to mean

OP posts:
ingles2 · 04/08/2009 22:01

...
Voldie knows there is a prophecy, but doesn't know it's exact wording, only the first half Snape overheard and repeated. I don't think he realises he needs to kill Harry himself until after he has regained a body in the GoF.

Pacific · 04/08/2009 22:14

So, if Voldy only knows the first part of the prophecy, when does he figure out that he must kill Harry?

janeite · 04/08/2009 22:15

Yes to Ingles. Only Dumbledore and later Harry know the full prophecy.

LongtimeinBrussels · 04/08/2009 22:16

LovingTheRain, I'm convinced they won't (sadly)!

janeite · 04/08/2009 22:19

I think Voldy hates being beaten - so he wants to kill harry for that reason, prophecy or not. And he has singled Harry out by marking him when he killed his parents, which is why he always thinks it's Harry, not Neville - Harry is Voldie's enemy because Voldie made it so.

I think the films will be ace - glass half full, see?!

janeite · 04/08/2009 22:20

Voldy? Voldie?

LovingTheRain · 04/08/2009 22:21

janeite - I think I need to start thinking along the same lines as you.

Tells self: the films will be great

I am actually really, really hoping they are. Maybe as they are splitting them in to two movies they won't miss out lots of the details they seem to have over the past few films!

MotherPi · 04/08/2009 22:26

Hello, can I pop on?

Love the books, and need to re-read the last two. Read them both so fast that I have no doubt missed huge chunks.

And I'm very excited to be seeing the film on Thursday. Will it live up to the book?

5inthebed · 04/08/2009 22:30

Humphrey, enjoy the film. My favourite bit of the film has to be when Ron eats those enchanted chocolates. Very funny!

Just marking my place ladies

LovingTheRain · 04/08/2009 22:33

MotherPi, enjoy the film Think of it as an edited summary of the books. Try not to compare!! The film works really well on its own and I really loved it. If you've read the book recently, not sure if it will 'live up' to the book so to speak, but as long as they are views as seperate entities, all will be harmoneous in the world of HP

nice new thread

LTR i read an interview that the director of DH did about why he had split the film into two and he basically said he wanted to put as much as he could of the book into the film to give the characters a chance of a fitting send off i was really disappointed that the film is split but after reading that i cant help but think the last two are going to be the best two

i have started to read PS to DD and she (up to now) doesnt seem overly interested il have to be persistent
xx ei xx

FairyLightsForever · 04/08/2009 23:15

I loved the film, but decided a long time ago that book and film are such different mediums (sp?), that you can't possibly compare the two. If I hadn't managed to convince myself, I would have got really annoyed watching the films. I have moved since last reading the books and haven't found the right box yet, but will be re-reading them as soon as I find the box!
