Ciao, hello, welcome!

OP posts:
francagoestohollywood · 14/10/2008 14:30

There is a cobas strike, I don't know as yet if it will have consequences on the dc's school day.

I think we are ok with books, we got loads of english books. Right, off to get dd.

OP posts:
Rosa · 14/10/2008 16:35

I thought it was transport as well Friday am I wrong and its just schools???
I was thinking about all this re training as well as how can somebody who has been teaching maths for the last X years also teach history or geography . Mind you up until I went to secondary school I had 1 teacher a year and it was a private school ( posh !!)BUT that was 20 years ago erm no 35 years ago and they were obviously trained in all areas.
Dd hasn't brought any pics home yet from school - She is still into scribbles but manges squiggle circles and puts apples on trees and blunts all the pencils !

happychappy · 14/10/2008 19:24

Hiya, sorry went to bed last night.

Fano is quite small but always loads going on. We not actually in town but just outside a tiny village which we like.

Yes there is a strike on Monday but not in my kids school. I'm disappointed I thought I'd get a lie in.

francagoestohollywood · 14/10/2008 21:02

I think it is both transport and school. boh!

Rosa, there was just one maestro at the elementari in past, but as you said they were trained in all the subjects.

Happychappy are you on the hills?

OP posts:
happychappy · 15/10/2008 07:26

No I'm inland about 5km. We at the bottom of a hill, hidden from view. We have a village dinner on Friday. I'm really looking forward to stuffing my face.

PippiCalzelunghe · 15/10/2008 08:26

uhh I love sagre!!!!

happychappy · 15/10/2008 09:32

I now have a very busy weekend. Church sunday and theatre, sunday a lunch and then a birthday party!

Monday I'm staying in bed in the morning!

Rosa · 15/10/2008 11:05

I think Dh will not be coming to Milano on Friday then !!!!
I had so much fun at sagre in the past I used to go to lots in Tuscany and Umbria from the cherries to the truffles great fun !
Spent the morning in SIL roof and we have the old carrozzina ( DH literally went and got SIL keys of house !) and the pedanetta will not fit as the brake is in the way - but as I said for the first month neither of us will be alone with 2 so we can decide what we need to do to transport the sisters ! so guess what I am washing and cleaning another pram this pm - but seeing as I used it last it was well covered !
There was a mini strike here of teachers this am - It does sound a real mess when do they expect this to be in place by next september if it gets passed ??

francagoestohollywood · 15/10/2008 11:22

at village dinner. Plus, I might be biased as I'm marchigiana for 1 quarter, but I find that food in le marche is divine!

Rosa, I see that the pram saga is still going . It is a shame I left my double buggy in a charity shop in Exeter. Mind you, I don't think that a double buggy in Venice would be that convenient!

Brangelina · 15/10/2008 11:23

Well, I've just rescheduled my meeting on Friday in case of problems, I have no intention of struggling to get somewhere. No one's mentioned any problems at school though, so hopefully that'll be OK.

at those of you who live in rolling hills, HC with her colline marchigiane and Sputnik with her laziali ones. Where is Sputnik btw? Was she going on holiday or something?

Sagre I've not been very lucky with, the only ones we've spotted in time round our way are for salami or quaglie, not really much use to me, insomma.

Glad you finally got hold of the navetta Rosa, that must be a relief! Are you going to look on ebay again or counting on this seeing you through the 6 months?

I have a quick question - prompted by the many dentistry threads on here, I've been wondering if I should be taking DD to a dentist for a check up. DP's friend is a dentist and he reckons there's no point with milk teeth, but the consensus in the UK seems to be quite different. I've asked pediatra in the past and she also told me DD was too young. What do you guys do?

francagoestohollywood · 15/10/2008 11:52

I'd take her to see a dentist when she's around 4. Find a friendly one, who won't charge .

Yes, where is Sputnik? I'm sure Gio is bargain hunting in zara home, but where is that sputnik woman??? (control freak emoticon).

So are you coming to milan or not? not even a quick randez vous at super polo?

OP posts:
Brangelina · 15/10/2008 12:00

I might manage a morning in Milan, I just didn't want to have to be somewhere at a certain time then getting stressed because I was held up somewhere. I'm going to watch the news tonight and decide on the basis of what they say.

I have my peanut butter, so Superpolo strictly not necessary, however I have run out of smoked tofu. Hmmm, tis tempting, but I spent 120 euros at Auchan at the weekend and bought nothing. We did shell out of Scarabeo though, so that explains some of it. Do people have scarabeo parties here? I'm getting quite bored of beating DP all the time, I need more of a challenge.

Rosa · 15/10/2008 13:10

Peanut butter - could eat some of mums biscuits but I hate the stuff otherwise !! Mind you peanuts are a no no so I have been told at the mo !
There is an online mumsnet scrabble game you could try that. I have an free cd rom that was in the torygraph I think i have never played it.
We are going to start with this navetta ( not in the wash yet as dd di pipi twice in her pants )then see how we go- I have found a second hand double via a friend if we decide to go down that route it is more from Jan onwards when there could be times when am alone and if dd will not stay attached to me I have mad mum visions of her running off into a canal.
We are going to try and see with this blessed pedana If my father comes out to see dd2 when she is born he is fab and making things attach / work that shouldn't.
Lordy me what a saga you are right- The other Navetta is taking up space and I might just give it to the nuns when they do a second hand sale !
Dentist - I was told in UK that she should just have a check when you go so they get used to it and then a proper check up from 4-5. Nipotina (6) has had 4 fillings already in her milk teeth but they were rotten. She had toothache and so SIL took her.

Brangelina · 15/10/2008 13:32

Oh have they started with that advice here too? I was told by my gynae that since I was English I might want to follow it, but it wasn't official advice in Italy yet. Peanut butter is a staple food in this household (peanut butter and marmalade sandwiches on rye bread, yum!), so I decided not to follow the advice as it would have been too stressful finding an alternative.

Have you taken your DD to the dentist in the UK then? Do you have an Italian dentist yourself or do you get checked when you go "home"? I don't have a dentist myself atm, keep meaning to get it sorted but somehow never get around to it. 'm not scared or anything (I actually find it a relaxing experience), just lazy.

Rosa · 15/10/2008 14:47

I have a UK dentist that I see yearly. Last time I went he had a sort of feel in her mouth and advised me to keep doing it so she gets used to it. ( she bites me when I try !!) However she is good about cleaning her teeth and opening wide so we can see when needed .
DH has an Italian dentist as well but he prefers the Uk one as its cheaper !
Lordy me warm again here !

happychappy · 15/10/2008 17:30

My DD is 10 and needs to go to see about braces, at the mention of that word I hear my pockets emptying!

francagoestohollywood · 15/10/2008 21:25

Brangelina, looks like ds won't go to school on friday morning as his maestra will be on strike. Shall we reschedule for next week?

Yes, that is the advise in the UK with regards to take small children to the dentist. I took ds last yr, he was 5sh. I spent yrs in the UK without a dentist and then signed up to a private practice near our house. It wasn't cheap. But they were extra gentle. Will need to find a dentist here, but yes, I can already feel my pockets emptying.

Rosa, when I was pg I was never told to avoid peanuts, but then I don't eat peanuts, except from the mm&s ones...

OP posts:
PippiCalzelunghe · 15/10/2008 21:33

I wasn't told first time round and ate loads. so did the same second time...

francagoestohollywood · 15/10/2008 21:40

Actually, when pg second time my lovely midwife didn't bother telling me what I should,/shouldn't eat. but she was lovely when I was rang her convinced I had listeria . She then told me to stop eating smoked salmon, to be on the safe side.

Sputnik · 15/10/2008 22:42

Haven't gone anywhere, just waiting to see when anyone would notice I'm gone

No seriously, I've got my mum and dad over so been a bit busy. And have also been doing DS's inserimento at the nursery. It seems to be going ok, tomorrow I'll be leaving him for the first time.

It's funny, seems like yesterday DD was at the same nido and I was pg!

Welcome Happychappy, I remember a nice restaurant in Fano.

Rosa · 16/10/2008 07:24

See Sputnik you have been missed !!!
Hope inserimento all going ok - how is your dd getting on now ?
Nonni wonderful things am counting the days until mine ( well half ) arrives.
Top it all I have dds cold now I just hope mine does not last as long as hers or I will be sneezing in the sala parto.
Foggy and close here this am was up at 4am looking for pullmini as we had 15 pax to get to the apt and the boats could't run. Dh was out with them and thank heavens we found 2 at 5.15 - NO taxis about either either via radio taxi or 24 hr switchboard flippin nightmare - times like this this place. drives me insane !!!

Brangelina · 16/10/2008 08:11

Franca - yes we should reschedule. My meeting is on Monday now but I was thinking of coming down later in the week for some mindless shopping.

Blimey Rosa at your pullman odyssey. I remember the nightmare when it snowed here a couple of years ago and I had to get 2 clients home to the UK with all the airports shut. Finally got them a flight from Torino to a different UK airport and they got home late morning the next day. Why they couldn't stay in a hotel for the night I don't know, the next morning the snow was all melted and the airports open, they would have got home the same time. I suspect they just wanted to make me sweat.

Welcome back Sputnik, you were missed. I noticed you got mentioned on the round-up. Fame at last, eh?

francagoestohollywood · 16/10/2008 11:11

Hello Sput! Hope you ds settles well in his nido. Haven't received the round up yet... but nice top have celebrity friends !

Brange, best days for me next week will be tuesday and friday.

Rosa at 4.30 wake up. Shall I CAT you then?

OP posts:
Rosa · 16/10/2008 12:25

Oh sorry forgot to do the profile thing - yes pls do am off to get a bit of shut eye as taking dd for haircut this pm . Went and got blood tests have very low ferro and need to drink more water as looks like the infection could come back if not careful. Ferro supplements say could counter work with antiacid stuff so am loathed to take - this pm going to buy spinach !!!

Brangelina · 16/10/2008 12:44

Rosa, snack on dried fruit/raisins, little snacks throughout the day to offset any bruciore di stomaco. Mixed nuts and raisins is ideal but v. difficult to find here. If you can get hold of an English Xmas cake that is very rich in iron too. Can you stomach eggs or is that acid hell? Alternatively buy some wheatgerm and stir it into your porridge, along with molasses. I am the fount of knowledge of obscure sources of iron......

Franca, I will email you, am not sure what days I have "free" as yet.
