Yes last week. I can't seem to find anything out. We are all waiting on my sister in law letting us know but she must have her hands full. We don't know how serious it is yet...feel a bit strange packing for a holiday...

LyraSilvertongue · 10/06/2008 13:15

Oh dear, poor brother. Dengue fever
Is he back in this country or still in China?

Berrie · 10/06/2008 21:05

He's here, he's at Kingston Hospital and they are not looking after him if I were not going on holiday I would be down there making a fuss ...

LyraSilvertongue · 10/06/2008 21:10

Oh, I drove past the hospital today. I'll wave next time
Hope you're ok. They'll look after him well there.

LyraSilvertongue · 10/06/2008 21:10

Sorry, I misread the not looking after him bit.
what's going wrong?

Berrie · 10/06/2008 21:39

He was in agony last night and asked for some pain relief. the nurse said yes and toddled off and never came back. He tried again at 4am, again they said yes but never came back. He had a drip in all night which had finished, in the morning he asked if it could be taken out, it's still in. He is being looked after by a registrar who does not know what is wrong. He saw a consultant for a couple of minutes who approached the bed and said, 'What's making you feel pooh then?' They won't let my sister in law's father, a surgeon see his notes. he should have his bloods done every 12 hours but tonights won't be done until the morning. they are talking Typhoid now but they don't really know and want to do a lumbar puncture...

LyraSilvertongue · 10/06/2008 21:44

That's crap Berrie
Keep us posted on how he's doing.
How's the packing going? And how have you been feeling the last few days? Better than last week?

oggsfrog · 11/06/2008 07:53

Oh shit Berrie, that's disgraceful. Somebody needs to give them an earful. He should not have to be in pain. Your poor brother .
I presume they are giving him antibiotics - from what I 've heard it's virtually impossible to make a positive diagnosis during the first week or so of typhoid.
How long has he been back from China?

Berrie · 11/06/2008 08:09

He's been back just over a week now. I wish I could go and help.
I'm feeling fine Lyra. Absolutly normal, if a little stressed with the packing! I don't suppose we are going to know what is wrong before we go away.

oggsfrog · 11/06/2008 09:00

Aw Berrie . What time do you leave tomorrow?

Eigenstate · 11/06/2008 09:11

Oh Berrie, that's terrible. The poor poor guy. You sometimes wonder if the stuff spouted about the crap-ness of the NHS is a tad exagerated, but in this case..... the bloody consultant should be shot. Is it worth contacting someone like the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine and attempting to get him transferred to somewhere that actually understands what they're dealing with? (Sorry, too many years with an alpha male and masterclasses in Official Complaints )

Is he any better this morning?

ZebsRoomofHerOwn · 11/06/2008 09:21

OK, I've changed again. Is going all Virginia Woolf on you any better?

Berrie · 11/06/2008 11:24

Much better!

We thought of that Zeb but it's hard to support them in doing that from here.

We go at 6am

Have not heard anything yet this morning.

Dh's Mum, before she died was blind and had short term memory loss. She couldn't see her food to eat and then forgot it was there. We complained and complained and yet we'd visit and there was a plate of cold untouched food there she didn't know about. She was a diabetic and of course got much worse and was moved from that ward. I'm afraid some of what you hear is true though they've always been very good with me and the kids...stop press...ds had second no reaction skin prick test yesterday and so they'll be calling him in for a nut challenge...signs are good but not out of the woods yet!

oggsfrog · 11/06/2008 11:46

That's good news about ds Berrie . Is dd allergic too?
I know all too well of some of the NHS shortcomings. I did 2 years training to be a psych nurse (quit before the final year) and worked in some elderley psych wards. What I saw in some places disgusted me and was one of my reasons for leaving

Much better Zeb

Berrie · 11/06/2008 11:48

Ne she's clear!

ZebsRoomofHerOwn · 11/06/2008 11:58

God it's grim out there, isn't it? Maybe that's why DH always refuses to see doctors or go to hospitals. As a total ignoramous, my feeling is that nursing started to slide at the same time as they tried to make it more academic, taking it out of the wards into the classroom, or worse, university, and messing about with the perfectly useful SEN, SRN career routes. But that's just my ignorant opinion.

Berrie, I think you're doing really well hanging in there, with so much going on.

oggsfrog · 11/06/2008 12:07

I agree Zeb. When I was training they were just beginning to introduce the academic rather than practical training. I did the hands on version.
They should never have outsourced the cleaning. They shouldn't have got rid of the matron/head nurse arrangement.
It's a mess now .

Oh that's good about dd Berrie. Fingers crossed for ds's nut challenge . what is the nut challenge? How do they do it? Do they advance on him brandishing a peanut?

Berrie · 11/06/2008 13:02

More or less

They'll admit him for the day. They'll put one to his lips...no reaction and they'll give him a biscuit. No reaction and he's no longer allergic. If he does react, he might need to stay longer They'll start with tree nuts which we are pretty sure he is not allergic to then if all is well try the peanuts.

Berrie · 11/06/2008 13:04

My cases are all up to 20kg There is still stuff to go in ...the place is a bomb site I've got 3 hours of lessons tonight

Berrie · 11/06/2008 13:09

Just spoke to my brother...he's feeling a little better and the fever has passed he thinks though he is now exhausted.

ZebsRoomofHerOwn · 11/06/2008 14:33

Good news Berrie.

oggsfrog · 11/06/2008 16:20

Oh that is good news Berrie - it'll make it easier for you to go away now without worrying too much.

Just in case I don't 'see' you before you go - hope you all have a happy, happy holiday and that your db is well on the mend by the time you get back.
Don't forget to bring me a stick of rock

Zeb, how is ds taking all the change?

LyraSilvertongue · 11/06/2008 19:49

Good news that your brother's on the mend Berrie. I'm surprised at his treatment by the hospital. DP was in Kingston hospital when he had pneumonia and he had no complaints at the time.
Hope you have a fab holiday

Berrie · 11/06/2008 20:06

Thanks all!

See you in two weeks. Take care everyone!
xx

ZebsRoomofHerOwn · 12/06/2008 11:51

She's gone!
