What date did you get married?

Just wondered when people got married and if there was any particular reason for choosing a certain date.

We got married on the 17th February. Nothing to do with it being near Valentines day. I get very hot and sweaty in the summer and didn't want a shiny face and wet armpits on my big day
Also its a bit of a miserable time of year as everyones getting fed up with the winter. Thought it would give everyone something to look forward to. Also we knew it would be cold so people didn't have to worry about what to wear (British summers are so unpredictable!)

I sound like I'm trying to justify my reasons for choosng February!

Wonder what is the most popular month?

3rd July, just like Aero and triplets it was 1982, so have I been married the longest?

Twinkie · 27/09/2004 10:56

12th June - pissed down seriously all day!!

This time - well who knows!!

mothernature · 27/09/2004 11:01

27-08-88- hubby born in 1966 - mil born 1944- granny born 1922 - should have got married a year sooner, then ds1 would have been born in 88 not 89 carring on the coincidence..

Another one for 16 may - chosen becasue it was a Saturday in the middle of May - and May is usually a good month for weather in Scotland.

As it happened, that year (1998), it was the one of TWO (yes, just two) good weekends we go that year (the next one was in September) - just as well, as the reception was in a marquee at ym Mum & Dad's! We had the most glorious wedding, and effectively had a great graden party in beautiful grounds (the azaleas were all out, and the blebells were out in the ground going down to the loch) so the place looked gorgeous and everyone was really relaxed. We then had a ceilidh late into the night - which was one of those balmy evenings..... Brings back lots of good memeories!

Dejags - we then flew off to South Africa for our honeymoon - a couple of nights in Jo'burg (to see my granny), then a week in Stellenbosch before driving up to Sabi Sands and three nights in Exeter game Lodge. Fantastic!

Sorry Alibubbles,
It wasnt 1982, not sure where you got that from, and no you havent been married the longest, we can beat that!

pollyanna · 27/09/2004 14:29

We were 16th May 1998 too! We booked the day quite late (probably because of the cup final).

Tessiebear · 27/09/2004 14:30

TRIPLETS!!!! I do know roughly how old you are and i DO want to meet you!

suedonim · 27/09/2004 14:41

I can beat you, too, Alibubbles, though I don't know about Triplets. It will be 32 long weary years for us this year.

16th May was Scottish Cup Final Day too. Dh found some of our (male) guests hovering near the TV (French doors into the house) - and he told them to switch the TV on to see the score (this was while I was getting the "pretty" photographs taken, and everyone was enjoying bubbly in the sun , prior to the sit down meal).

They looked at him horrified, saying, "we can't do that, it's your wedding", to which he replied, "Precisely, it's MY wedding - and I'm saying it's OK!"

whymummy · 27/09/2004 16:14

oh titania,i've just seen this
thank you so much

whymummy · 27/09/2004 16:16

happy anniversary to tommy's mum and dad too

meanmum · 27/09/2004 16:24

31 December 1999. My mum was having a Millenium New Years bash so we pretty much gate crashed it and got married there. Tightwad you could say as obviously mum and dad paid for the lot . We didn't have a honeymoon but that's actually worked out brilliantly as now every holiday we go on I say it could be our honeymoon which gives me licence to spend, spend, spend.

lou33 · 27/09/2004 16:26

14th June 1995

alibubbles · 27/09/2004 16:44

triplets, got my punctuation in the wrong place! I meant to put 3rd July like aero, I was 1982. I thought Suedonim would be longer than me as I know she has quite grown up children.

triplets · 27/09/2004 18:11

Ok I had better come clean, we got married in 1978, so just had our 26th a/v last week! Oh Tessiebear you seem to know me very well!

Cam · 28/09/2004 10:56

I've been married twice, once on a cold miserable January day (the marriage didn't last) and second time on a hot sunny beautiful Saturday in May (9th) - guess which I prefer?

teabelly · 28/09/2004 11:10

June 4th...we'd already booked a holiday and this was the day before. DH didn't exactly propose he just sat there one night and said we could move or get married that year...needless to say I organised as much as possible as quickly as possible before he could change his mind!

tallulah · 28/09/2004 12:51

September 24th. It was the only Saturday in September that our vicar could guarantee he'd be available for when we booked it (a year in advance!!). Turned out to be the most popular day of the year for weddings when we tried to book the reception, photographer, florist, cars etc etc! (1983)

Had originally planned for June, but friend at college pointed out that September would be an extra 3 months savings... (& have always envied people marrying in June ever since!!!!!)

Don't remember getting engaged. Bought the ring in April but presumably told everyone on my birthday in May.

(Since had 2 DSs in September so we have a mad week or so of 3 birthdays & an Anniversary.. I hate September!!!!!! )

Dingle · 28/09/2004 13:01

OMG, Fio, what a coincidence!!
I can remember searching everywhere for a nice but plain basque to wear under my dress(I was a slim thing then)and on the day I didn't bother with it- my dress was boned and it was just far too hot. Poor old DH, didn't have tops but his tails were a really thick heavy wool. We were both glowing with hapiness.

susanmt · 28/09/2004 16:22

29th December 1994, coming up for 10 years!

We wanted to get married before dh graduated as he was then going to launch into a year of ghastly junior doc stuff, and I knew for the last 6 months of his course if Iwasn't in the same house as him I'd never see him and he'd never pass his exams. The summer before that he was away on his elective placement, and Christmas was the next time I had much of a holiday (teacher). It was also a handy time of year for people to be able to come to the wedding, all dh's relations from N. Ireland etc.

It was great, a lovely crisp winters day. We went all festive with bright red flowers (bridesmaid had a foliage boquet which was gorgeous), velvet cloaks (a la Scottish Widows advert), warm filling food and a ceilidh - it was great.
