we are fond of art in this house - lots of prints and the like - quite a bit of colourful modern art (Rothko, Kandinsky, Klee) and some other prints we've picked up over time.

unfortunately, neither dh or I have got around to hanging them properly so most of the pictures are sitting against the walls ggrrr

foxinsocks · 14/01/2007 16:51

the other prints I love are old photos of London and the old Railway poster adverts from the '20s-'40s

My husband and I are very fond of oils and have a very nice collection. I collect mostly still lifes and portraits and he enjoys landscapes.

I have a large, framed original photo of a bluebell wood which I'm very fond of in my front room. I also have some 'green man' sculptures, some tree paintings and a metal dragonfly sculpture. So I suppose there is a vague 'natural world' vibe thing going on.
Trouble is, I can't do the 'buy a picture cos it matches the decor' thing so the other pictures don't go and I think my front room lakcs a certain something...
One day I will get round to hanging them in groups, with frames whcih 'go' like you're supposed to.

filthymindedvixen · 14/01/2007 17:17

I love pictures of the sea and would like to start a collection, but we've so little room

paulaplumpbottom · 14/01/2007 17:22

It is a bit cheesy and commercial Cheery but art is subjective and you should go for what you like.

MiaWallace · 14/01/2007 17:26

I have a Dali print - The Meditative Rose - but I'm getting a bit bored of it now so might replace it.

NotAnOtter · 14/01/2007 17:28

i love art and have a lot. and 'pieces' bits of sculpture and the like!

cheeryface · 14/01/2007 17:30

thanks paula, opinion appreciated

MrsBadger · 14/01/2007 17:32

we have quite a lot actually - and we rotate them when we get bored

Living room has batiks from Uganda and a beautiful print of Southerndown (wedding present from PIL)
Hall has pen-and-ink landscape by DH's cousin (wedding present again)
Stairs/landing have charcoal landscapes from Nepal
Spare room has an abstract acrylic from Prague and a thangka.

Also have a three-aperture photo frame with arty b/w shots of the first three places we lived together - Canterbury with cathedral etc, Oxford w dreaming spires and, um, Clapton Pond w a no.38 bus...

foundintranslation · 14/01/2007 17:34

I have a couple of prints by an artist friend, lots of Guardian posters (thank you southeastastra - did the biccies arrive?), a few theatre/bookshop/Goethe Institute posters and lots of photos - mostly of ds and our wedding but one of a fountain in Berlin that I took myself and am very proud of. Also the copy of my D.Phil certificate that had 4 or 5 spelling mistakes in the thesis title - people think I'm a horrendous poser until they read it and appreciate the comedy value

motherinferior · 14/01/2007 17:34

I have recently purchased (ostensibly for DP's Christmas present) a rather nice lino print featuring a naked lady reclining on top of an elephant.

Fillyjonk · 14/01/2007 17:36

we have quite a lot. mainly prints, some original artwork. Some bits by friends.

but no money for frames

can't do the thing where you co-ordinate artwork with your sofa cushions, eeeew.

charliecat · 14/01/2007 17:43

I have one big picture in my front room. Its just cream and brown coloured paint splats in a brown frame.
It was done on new years day 2006, we traced our hands onto pieces of paper cut them out and then splatted paint over them, them removed the hand prints, to leave the outline.
Does match the sofa and the cushions coz I used the paint that had been used in the front room!

MrsBadger · 14/01/2007 17:47

Filly, you could always buy the cheap unfinished frames from Ikea (think they're called Ram, about £3 for a 50x70cm) and use tester pots to paint them the right colour for the contents as a temporary solution.
They're polycarbonate glazed not glass so they're dead light to hang.

cheeryface · 14/01/2007 17:54

so, where can i buy something nice to hang in my bedroom?
any suggestions?

littlerach · 14/01/2007 17:58

Dh bouht me a lovely canvas one, it's red and got different tings onit. Like that makes any sense!!
But it si nice.
it was from a local shop. Think it's nice to look locally and buy stuff that's not mass produced.

We have quite a lot of photo type images up, as dh does photography as a hobby. Lovely ones of the girls, and osme of places we've been.

And we got a framed print from a frioend for our wedding.

motherinferior · 14/01/2007 18:01

Please tell me people don't buy things to co-ordinate with the sofa cushions.

Come to that our sofa doesn't co-ordinate with the sofa cushions.
