Try your local gallerys, if you are looking for something really unusual your local art institute probably have a yearly sale.

foxinsocks · 14/01/2007 18:15

come to think of it, our 2 sofas are not even the same colour

none of our artwork really matches with anything (nor do the frames) and it does make everything look a bit higgledy piggledy but tbh, there's more to worry about in life really isn't there!

there are a lot of places online that sell fabulous prints

must go sort kids out but will post some links later if someone else hasn't

100PerCentCod · 14/01/2007 18:16

no its horrible
of COURSe we hthink tis nice
DOH

paulaplumpbottom · 14/01/2007 18:16

Its too contrived if everything matches.

motherinferior · 14/01/2007 18:18

I have just got round - inspired by this thread - to ordering this print which will co-ordinate with DP's Muslim origins. And indeed with the cats.

Wheelybug · 14/01/2007 18:20

We have some original art - a couple of paintings done by a friend's mother who is a relatively renowned artist in her field. They gave us one as a wedding pressie and DH bought the other with soe money he'd had for his 30th. We also have a couple of originals we've picked up on holiday - one from sri lanka an done from Cornwall !

Also have a number of prints from holidays.

KezzaG · 14/01/2007 18:34

Depends how much you want to spend really. We have an Artisan in our town and have some Paul Horton, Peter Smith and John Wilson. John Wilsons are modern pictures of galleries with stick people looking at classic works of art, so I can say I have a picasso in my living room LOL

Fillyjonk · 14/01/2007 18:39

i like that mi

have you seen the exhibition?

its rather fabulous

higgldy piggldy is the way to go

best if not even the sofa cushions co ordinate with each other

otherwise it looks like you're trying too hard . oooh i do feel strongly about this.

oh mrs b-ram frames...yes i know of them. they are fab but...

tiiiiight month/year/decade

also lots of things to frame

motherinferior · 14/01/2007 18:41

Nobody could accuse the decor of the Inferiority Complex of trying too hard.

Fillyjonk · 14/01/2007 18:43

yes

and in no way was my last post born of insecurity

my house is in no way a shit hole with prints taped to the wall

oh no

Carmenere · 14/01/2007 18:44

I have a couple of Japanese original paintings done by dp's martial arts sensei who is an esteemed artist too, I also have a coupel of original pieces done by artist friends and my sil is a professional artist. One of my favourites is a Chinese painting on silk of a single magpie-type bird that I found in a charity shop for a tenner. It has a rank frame but it is lovely and in the future I will get it reframed.

I love art and I think(mainly due to the fact that I know lots of artists) that buying original art is a really good way of investing money, you can get really good bargains. I intend, in the future, to buy as much as I can.

Bucketsofdynomite · 14/01/2007 19:33

I have Japanese woodcut prints in my lounge, they're 1920s and I love them because they remind me of modern Japanese animation, you can really see where cartoons started, all black outlines and colour.
My mum paints giant pictures of vegetables and is supposed to be doing me one sometime, must chase it. She did a fantastic 3' long chili for my sis & BIL, think I want an aubergine.

WriggleJiggle · 14/01/2007 19:52

This summer dh and I had a 'summer of art'. We bought ourselves art materials and had a go ourselves (very embarasing, but great fun and highly recommended). We also bought a few originals that we fell in love with whilst trapsing around galaries.
My fav
Rievaux Abbey by Ed Kluz
dh's fav
Colin Smithson

We even commisioned our own piece

Carmenere · 14/01/2007 19:57

Lovely pictures Wrig

OliveMumsnet · 14/01/2007 20:01

We have an original Vettriano in the dining room and a Banks one we commisioned in our bedroom.

Banksy is best mates with DP

WideWebWitch · 14/01/2007 20:05

I've got a lovely nude limited edition print which dh bought me when we were going out together, I love it. But we haven't got around to hanging it up, it's leaning against the wall in our room. I cannot remember the artist's name, it's a woman. I might go and look.

paulaplumpbottom · 14/01/2007 20:07

Olivemumsnet, while I am not a huge fan of Vettriano my DH is and he would be insanely jealous. He keeps wanting to purchse one but I haven't let him yet.

I have a nice Picasso lithograph of a woman's head (1940s so very simple and figurative) cost about a £1K about ten years ago. A couple of paintings from the same period and lots of framed black and white photographs of the three children and dh and myself as kids which are in the hall and up the staircase, plus odd things, like some original photographic prints such as one of Noel Coward and some little pencil sketches bought in little galleries for less than £20. For the children's rooms I have some beautiful pictures done by an artist friend. I would like more paintings.

funnypeculiar · 14/01/2007 20:13

olivemumsnet - my sister is remotely of you - big, huge banksy fan!!

PrettyCandles · 14/01/2007 20:21

I have a wonderful, large, freehand embroidery made by my grandmother when she was in her teens (so it's nearly 100yo). It's in desperate need of restoration, but has pride of place on the wall of our living room.

WideWebWitch · 14/01/2007 20:23

I went and looked, the artist is Ann McGill.

paulaplumpbottom · 14/01/2007 20:23

I like that sort of thing to. I collect antique samplers.

WideWebWitch · 14/01/2007 20:25

And I have some framed posters advertising my dad's plays (he was a playwright sometimes) too and haven't got around to putting them up yet either.

Glassofwine · 14/01/2007 20:30

Olivemumsnet - Does he accept commissions from anyone or just friends? You are very lucky
