Following on from another thread - I have decided to give up the booze ... ( for January ).
There are a number of reasons why I felt the need to grasp the nettle ( so to speak )

  • 3 alcoholics in my family
  • very over weight
  • my health is suffering
  • I am ( truthfully ) becomming rather dependent and feel that the pros outweigh the cons

Only trouble is ... i know that it will be damn hard for me ....

anyone want to join me

Hello

I dont drink all that much, perhaps 2 or 3 times a year but I just wanted you to know that although i wont be doing the hard work with you, that I am here to listen and offer support or just be a sounding board Not sure how much use I can be but just wanted you to know.

All the best and good luck xxx

OK, I'll steer off the sauce in Jan. Did it last year too; partly because I'm drinking much too much at the moment, not repulsively but in a way which really can't continue in a non-festive season; and also because I find January really hard to handle, and if I steer off the depressant alcohol it might, you know, help cheer me up. I am so very glum and tedious usually.

trace2 · 31/12/2005 17:24

i have just opened a bottle and its urgh, dont know whats up with me

JonesTheSteamingSanta · 31/12/2005 17:25

One of my NY's resolutions is to give up alcohol (at least drinking during the week - always seem to end up drinking a glass or two of wine a night).

Intend giving up totally for January (and also avoiding chocolate and crisps as well!!)

I really need to do this too. I swear I am getting those veins oy face that heavy drinkers get

motherinferior · 31/12/2005 17:28

Yes, I'm also planning to steer off sugar and get back into the swimming pool (major disruption partly through no fault of mine). I really have to take January seriously, I've found.

Mercy · 31/12/2005 17:53

Ok Crystaltips I think I'll have to join you, during the week at least.

Motherinferior, you sound just like me at the moment.

I can't start tomorrow though (excuses, excuses)

Janh · 31/12/2005 17:54

Should do, seriously, like I should give up MN, but that's not going to happen either...

Crystaltips · 31/12/2005 17:55

trace - I am like you - I am getting to the point where I am not enjoying my glass of wine - but it's time to have one IYKWIM ..... surely that's not good

I'm in - I abstained for most of November and the first 2 weeks in December. Have made up for it since though

SNOWaMANda · 31/12/2005 18:07

I'm teetotal in January. I'm also not having sweets or chocolates or bread! I need to lose weight and the alcohol is probably what keeps it on even though I probably only drink once a week and sometimes not that. It's that I drink much more when dd is with her dad.

MrsMiggins · 31/12/2005 18:38

I am not giving up MN as it always makes me feel better
I will give up drinking during the week as I too am drinking every night AND feel like you Crystaltips - not a good sign

havent drunk since Christmas day and I must admit I do feel better for it

will make up for it tonight though

WideWebWitch · 31/12/2005 19:30

Crystaltips, as promised I'm with you on this. I did over a month without booze last year and lost quite a bit of weight. I was eating less and walking more too so I think all those together = good result. Plus I proved to myself that I can do it! Since August I have mostly not been drinking in the week as I've been staying with Ex ILS who don't drink or have it the house and it's fine, I've got used to it. BUT I find I overcompensate at the weekends, which is ridiculous so I really want to do at least a month with no alcohol at all.

iota · 31/12/2005 19:34

I'm going to cut down as part of my plan to lose wight and get fit (again) (sigh)

I lot about 10lb last yr ad would like to do that again this yr as half of it is back on again

kitegirl · 31/12/2005 19:41

I'm in. except for one week in Jan when we are on holiday, I can't abstain then - please don't make me please please... I'll make it up in February I promise

motherinferior · 01/01/2006 14:10

Well, I haven't drunk anything yet today but otoh am floating on the tide of last night's champagne still

Crystaltips · 01/01/2006 14:15

This is my THIRD day without booze.
I survived last night without drinking - and felt so much better this morning.
Have just come back from a drinks party ( on the perrier ) ... feeling very proud of myself.

I know there will be hard times ..... during which time I shall resort to a couple of squirts of rescue remedy so ... fingers crossed to losing some weight !!

Well, at about 10pm last night dh said 'shall we have a chat about our year and next year - I'll have some Champagne if you're opening it,' which I wasn't but then did. So we had smoked salmon, Champagne, lovely cheese, a great conversation and, ahem, a lovely night but that is it: No More Drinking for me until February at the very, very earliest. We didn't even finish the bottle last night though so no hangover for me today, thank goodness. Well done Crystaltips.

WideWebWitch · 01/01/2006 15:19

Dh said I ought to have something else to mark the end of the day etc but I can't think what. Ame isn't quite the same is it and tastes of perfume anyway iirc. It can't be food since I want to lose weight, can't be booze, sigh. I am just going to have to say, right, that is the end of my day, I don't need anything to mark it aren't I?
