Following on from another thread - I have decided to give up the booze ... ( for January ).
There are a number of reasons why I felt the need to grasp the nettle ( so to speak )

  • 3 alcoholics in my family
  • very over weight
  • my health is suffering
  • I am ( truthfully ) becomming rather dependent and feel that the pros outweigh the cons

Only trouble is ... i know that it will be damn hard for me ....

anyone want to join me

Becks alcohol free lager is amazing tastes v alcoholic imo

katetee · 03/01/2006 08:08

so how do you feel this morning? bright, refreshed after a great alcohol free night of sleep? Like hell, I couldn't sleep a wink, much prefere falling into a nice hazy wine induced state. Now have to get kids to school and v.grumpy.

katetee, after a day or two when the alcohol is clearing out of your system, you'll be able to sleep again, and you'll feel far better in the morning than you do after drinking!

I'm not promising to give up altogether, as my social life really does revolve around alcohol, but I'm certainly cutting down drastically, along with starting my new year diet today.

I'm going vegan for a few days to kick start it. Going to make a carrot, apple and ginger juice in a minute. Planning evening drinks of camomile tea to relax me and help me sleep without wine.

JonesTheSteam · 03/01/2006 12:45

I couldn't sleep last night either katetee!!!

puddle · 03/01/2006 12:49

This is my first day although yesterday I only had 1 small glass of wine as I knew I had to get up early this morning. I've got used to not drinking in the week so it feels fine, I think Friday and Saturday are going to be the hardest. How is everyone else managing? Everyone at work is long faced and January ish and we all need something to cheer ourselves up and take our minds off being on diets and teetotal. Most of my office has given up wine so that's practically a support group!

Blossomhill · 04/01/2006 20:04

Katetee - I am the same as you. Normally drink every night and it helps me sleep.
Haven't slept since 1st Jan properly. I fell asleep at 6.30am this morning and re-woke at 8.15am to take ds to school. Dh snapped at me "fgs go and buy a bottle of wine tonight "
I am determined though and am dieting as well! So my body is really detoxing. Gone up a stone last year and really don't want another stone creeping on top in 2006.
Have a solution for my sleeplessness. Went to the chemist and said please give me something that will knock me out as I cannot function I am that knackered. I now have 2 Phenergan sitting waiting for 8.30 so I can fall into a deep sleep.
I feel terrible

Crystaltips · 04/01/2006 20:31

kitegirl · 04/01/2006 20:42

ha, just found out I am up the duff, so I have an unfair advantage. I'll just concentrate on getting fat from now on. Good luck with your sober January!

puddle · 04/01/2006 20:44

On my second day. I was hugely productive last night - cleaned the oven and the kitchen floor. House may look better at the end of the month!

Went to meet colleagues in the pub and lunchtime and stuck to water.

I couldn't sleep last night either, it took at least an hour which is most unlike me. Feel good this evening though and not tempted (although have discovered a lone bottle in the fridge that we have not finished off pre-Teetotal Jan.)

motherinferior · 04/01/2006 21:01

I actually don't have too much of a problem with this. Well, so far anyway. I've done booze free months before, not that they stop me leaping back into the bottle once they're over!

WideWebWitch · 04/01/2006 22:40

Anyone read the article in Easy Living mag about liver damage? Scared me enough to think I may have to go longer than a month just to protect my liver, which may already be f*ed.

katetee · 05/01/2006 08:18

Hiya
Kitegirl, thats a bit too drastic for me, think I'll tough it out without getting preggersLOL!!! I must admit its the early part of the eveing I struggle with, about 7.30-8.00, I mooch around thinking "Its only wine, I can go and buy a bottle, why am I depriving ,myself of what I enjoy" (also doing 2 week cereal challenge, bloody starving too). By about 9 i am thinking Oh well I'll just have a fizzy water and lime again. The problem is I am bored too, DH is drying out with me and we are like a couple of middle aged old farts. Is this as good as it gets!! Maybe I will have a look at the Easy Living mag to boost me a bit. Wickedwaterwitch, is it the feb issue? I know I ve gotta go more than a month, health issues etc.
Sleep - well first 3 nights, absolutely rubbish, kept waking up really easily, felt terrible in the morning. Last night I slept and feel a lot better this morning, if a little subdued. Probably pms too, that doesn't help.
Chin up ladies.

katetee · 05/01/2006 08:20

Blossomhill - have just properly read your u.name, how could you do that to me LOL!! I love blossomhill, and banrock sation and many many others!!!!!! sorry just halucinating here!!!lol

WideWebWitch · 05/01/2006 08:22

Kateee, it's the issue out now. Well, my first night without booze last night and I feel fine this morning. I'm sort of looking forward to the rest of the month, it feels like a challenge.

Blossomhill · 05/01/2006 13:20

Katetee -

Well had a great nights sleep thanks to 2 phenergan tablets. I was in such a lovely deep sleep
I am so glad I am not drinking. I am like you WWW in that I am so scared I have damaged my liver. After drinking wine I quite often have pains all round my back which I think is linked to your kidneys/liver.
The other plus is that already (am dieting as well) I am nowhere near as bloated as I was

WideWebWitch · 05/01/2006 21:42

Night 2 for me and I feel fine. I tell you what though, I look awful! My eyes are red despite 2 days of healthy food, 8 hours sleep last night and no booze. It's most disheartening but I will carry on, I feel highly motivated. I've just spent a blissful hour in Borders and have bought loads of books so that's my Friday and Saturday night sorted.

katetee · 06/01/2006 08:15

Hi everyone
and welcome to another day in the sahara!!
Am now on day 6, feel ok, sleep is improving but still feel shattered in the morning. I don't think im finding it as hard as i thought, a bit like when i stopped the ciggies, like it, want it but dont really need it. I hope that doesn't sound too full of my own self imprtance, it wasn't meant to, I just think most of it is in my head!IYSWIM. Anyway, tonight will be a test as I always always always drink on a Friday night, I'll have to pretend its Monday LOL.
Crystaltips - How are you doing? Is everything Ok with you. I can fully understand 3 of your reasons for quitting, but I think I was on the way to being the only alcoholic in my family!
WWW - must trawl through books as yet unread - good idea, thanks.
Blossomhill - how are you? Another lovely night in sleepyland?
Keep in touch

anorak · 06/01/2006 08:39

Come on ladies, don't be downhearted. You can't undo years of wine in two days! Give it four or five at least

I've survived three drink free nights now and didn't really miss it - I drank diet hot chocolate or chamomile tea instead and took a valerian capsule and had good sleep two nights out of three.

I'll prob drink wine tonight but abstain for another three days till my London night out on Tues. This is enormous cutting down for me, I normally only have one or two nights off a week.

I'm quite enjoying feeling holy!

JonesTheSteam · 06/01/2006 09:35

Well done everyone (so far!!!!)

I'm still surviving - not really missing it TBH, but I'm not sleeping very well, so feeling very tired and grumpy in the mornings!!!

DH gave in last night and drank the other three-quarters of one of those small bottles of Blossomhill that I bought to go in the spag bol on Tues, and then sent me a text message asking me to bring a bottle of red home. Seeing as he's allowed to drink on Friday and Saturday, I think it's very weak to give up a whole day early

Am wondering if I'll survive the weekend, though, especially if he has a glass or two of red wine!!!!! Wish me luck!!!!!

puddle · 06/01/2006 09:48

Day four for me. Didn't seem hard to do without at all last night and slept really weell, but finding it almost impossible to get out of bed in the mornings - this may be because it's so cold and dark though! I've been drinking lots of water and hot water with lemon and ginger. A bit more tea than I would normally too - will try and cut that down again next week.

Like WWW I look dreadful though.

Blossomhill · 06/01/2006 17:43

Hi katetee - yes I am sleeping much better thanks. Like you cannot get up in the mornings.
Already losing weight which is good.

Just one question can we have 1 drink at the weekend ?
