Tea Room the Twelfth

Come in, come in, to Tea Room the Twelfth! We now inhabit a rambling log cabin, surrounded by mysterious pine forests and mist-covered mountains (but also, strangely) easily accessible by regulars, new-comers and passing bishops, ferried in by Mellors driving the troika. All the usual rules apply and all are welcome!

in MN tea room world I have spent teh day X-country sking. Swooshing along groomed trails on pristine snow tho teh trees and catching sight of native wildlife going about its business ( and one or 2 NMBs sledging) .

In RL I was parent helper at preschool, hung my washing on line up wrong way so it all caught and kept hold of wet snow, had boy fall over on ice outside house and Dh unable to get car onto drive as all slick as snot underfoot.

RacingSnake · 05/01/2010 20:53

I hung my washing out a couple of days ago (I tend to leave it on the line until I finally remember where all the clean knickers are ) and Wriggle's jumpers had frozen solid! Haven't seen that since I was a child, and mammoths roamed the snowy plains of Southern England. I had to lay them on a bush in the sun to thaw.

Catita, if you are chilly every winter, a duvet sounds like an excellent present from you to you.

I forgot to have my little moan of the day. Was speaking to my colleague this morning, and she managed to get rather a lot of phrases like 'well, when you are a 5 person family its a bit different' and 'I think it's so nice for all the kids to get to play together at Christmas' and so on into the convo. She can be a bit smug about her kids tbh, and it can get on my nerves a bit.

How about some hot mulled cider tonight ?

mistlethrush · 05/01/2010 21:20

Picked up mistlechick at 2.30ish - reception and nursery rolled into one - one form only. Most of the teachers had also been sent home by then due to lack of pupils!!!

Probably had 5 or 6 inches between leaving this morning and returning - sent dh and mc out to have a snowball fight when they got home. Then made a mechano robot with dh. And was in bed by 6.10!!!

What warming offerings are available in the tearoom this evening? Any suggestions? Alcoholic preferably and now on an 'eek the wine out as long as possible in the hope that dh gets some sort of job soon' situation in RL!

MadBadandCoveredinTinsel · 05/01/2010 21:32

Hot mulled cider? Just the ticket! Many thanks, Cmot.

Argh to your smug colleague, Cmot. (I've just been responding, perhaps unwisely, to comments in similar vein on another thread here). If I were feeling naughty bold, I would reply in kind next time. Something about 'it's so nice that we can really focus on Cmottiddler and help him with his lego/pretend to be a camel with him/give him lots of one to one time". But you would never be so petty, I'm sure.

Catita - Get onto Ebay now and buy yourself a duvet!

No snow here yet. Will we be snowed in tomorrow or not? The plot, if not the snow, thickens.

CMOTdibbler · 05/01/2010 21:39

It's a bit tricky as we work together very closely, so can't say anything. So just gently seethe..

The weather map says that you will have lots of snow tonight, so heres hoping (or not, depending on preference)

MadBadandCoveredinTinsel · 05/01/2010 21:48

Yes, but the snow's already 50 minutes late !

I had also meant to say that I too have laundry that's frozen to the washing line. The kitchen is already so cold that I dare not open the door to go and retrieve it. Things are getting Dickensian around here!

Cmot - I understand. In those situations, I like to have imaginary conversations in my head, in which I saya the unsayable.

mistlethrush · 05/01/2010 21:49

Sorry CMot, crossed posted - yes, mulled cider sounds perfect tonight!

I'm just waiting for the insensitive remarks from the secretary at work who has announced that she is pregnant with No2 - No.1 having been cooed over at all stages - and the fact that No.1 was 2wks ahead of where dc2 for us would have been (actually, 4 - but who's counting) had things gone differently - just waiting for the 'oh, I don't know how I'm going to cope with only 2 years between them etc etc etc... She will be left in no doubt about the inappropriateness and insensitivity of any such comments.

UniS · 05/01/2010 22:14

Thing is MT, she really doesn't know. Its not just being said to wind you up. none of us know how we will cope with what life chucks at us. Its not much different to the I don;t know HOW I'll get all this work done AND theres a bank holiday next week. We all KNOW bank holidays mean one less working day, but we somehow forget to allow for them.

Here endeth Unis attempt at a homily, I'll leave them to people like mary who have had "training".

I tend to feel a bit smug about only having one to deal with when I watch other mums at toddlers ( for example) being pestered by 2 or 3 and having to divide their attention and missing out on the biscuits. Am lucky I guess in having some other mums of one as friends as well as mums of many.

I offer you, mulled ginger wine, that should warm teh cockles of your heart. tis Scottish apparently! and leberkuchen to add to teh gingery theme. and for tomorrow there will be a beefy hearty soup and fresh bread.

In RL I did resort to buying a bag of expensive organic bread flour from village shop JUST in case I can't get to supermarket till weekend, as we are on last bag of flour and half a loaf of bread. DH was told to take work home and not come in if doing so was going to be dangerous. His attempt to e-mai himself some work in a large file has failed, so he has some reading to do, CPD he claims is also possible with a bit of web browsing .

ThumbleBells · 05/01/2010 22:16

in an ironic sort of way at MT. CMOTD - bah to her smuggery, I like MadBad's suggested responses though!

RS - thank you for your support on my "lame" thread - am amazed how many people are still posting on it considering how "lame" it is! It annoyed me last night (for me) - it still does tbh and I haven't stuck my head over the parapet for aaaages so thought it was about time

I bet all the snow has gone gone gone by the time we get to the UK - earliest flight we could get was 21st Jan (I wanted a week earlier) and we'll be faced with muddy yuk everywhere instead.

Really ought to go and change my name back...

MadBadandCoveredinTinsel · 05/01/2010 22:23

What lame thread is that, Thumb? Is that why you might need the priest hole?

RacingSnake · 05/01/2010 22:37

Have already eaten the bombay mix (family size) bought to keep us going in case we are snowed in tomorrow. Better go to bed now.

OP posts:
mistlethrush · 05/01/2010 22:48

RS - funny that happens isn't it - if you hadn't had it in, you wouldn't have eaten anything - but it called to you JUST because you knew it was there!!!

We're lucky - small Coop shop within easy walking distance - but fairly well stocked up anyway here and have got plenty of veg for hearty stews or winter soups, and a good amount of bread flour - MrMT makes the bread.

Sorry haven't seen your lame thread - is it worth looking for?

Did see your dog recommendation though Tea!

thumbwitch · 05/01/2010 22:48

The AIBU to be annoyed by the MNHQ description of the Schools Closed - are teachers snow wimps?

I am now a snivelling newbie who would be better off on NM apparently!

No, no priesthole required - sense of humour intact and most people weren't too rude (some were but I ignored them)

mistlethrush · 05/01/2010 22:52

won't wade in I don't think!

Jacksmama · 06/01/2010 05:08

how are you all snowbunnies?

by the way, have we lost notquiteagymbunny??

CMOTdibbler · 06/01/2010 07:57

We had 3" yesterday, and another 4" overnight. We have loads of food in, but might walk into town (well, whoever isn't working at that point will - we'll be doing shifts as no way to get cars out of the estate) later

amberlight · 06/01/2010 09:13

Foot of snow!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

HallelujahHeisBorntoMary · 06/01/2010 09:50

Do I go shopping? We have 1mm of snow. Got fresh food for a couple of days, so not desperate... don't want to form part of this panic buying frenzy that apparently is happening...

CMOTdibbler · 06/01/2010 10:02

Nursery was actually open, so DH walked DS there (well, mostly carried him as the snow was up to his knees). Took DH an hour to get there and back, but apparently DS loved it - and has 2 members of staff to himself

I wouldn't bother food shopping Mary - as long as you have enough for a few days, theres no point

teafortwo · 06/01/2010 11:14

In RL I have to run to work now... and I don't feel like it (feeling quiet and fragile and in need of a duvet)... too cold outside!!!

So in TRL (tearoom life) I will lay on the sofa with a duvet and watch a nice film!

amberlight · 06/01/2010 13:01

Shall have a nice casserole on for people for later...

mistlethrush · 06/01/2010 13:04

Took 90mins to do 5miles this morning instead of normal c.15 - 20mins - had to come in as car being serviced - just hope that they get it back in good time so that I can leave early before any more awful drivers get onto the roads!

Had worked out stopping strategy in case on the only steep hill - but I think that its been salted fairly well, so not a problem there - just heavy traffic because everyone was on the main road rather than doing normal rat runs along smaller roads.

Mistlechick wailed this morning when we said school was closed. Hopefully dh has managed to put a positive face on and get on with it - he did manage quite well yesterday when playing snowballs - most sucessful throw at MC was apparently lobbing a large snowball onto the single story extension to the back of the house, above mc's head - it dislodged LOTS more snow which all descended on his head! Dh had problems getting mc's boots off, turned out that they were packed on with snow, despite snowsuit being on the outside of them, at least to start with!

UniS · 06/01/2010 13:33

RL- snow snow snow. AT last. a good couple of inches of beautiful dry snow. made 2 snowmen already, off sledging soon.

mistlethrush · 06/01/2010 13:38

UniS - I've seen people cycling about in it around here, on the main roads - must be mad!
