Come in, come in, to Tea Room the Twelfth! We now inhabit a rambling log cabin, surrounded by mysterious pine forests and mist-covered mountains (but also, strangely) easily accessible by regulars, new-comers and passing bishops, ferried in by Mellors driving the troika. All the usual rules apply and all are welcome!

MadBad/Daisy - ever get to play lacrosse in the snow? Oh, and of course, no track suits... I can remember getting the ball lost when it rolled under heavier falls of snow

UniS · 06/12/2009 23:10

found you.
long day, too much driving, back tomorrow. byyyyyeeeee

MadBadandCoveredinTinsel · 06/12/2009 23:17

Mistle - Wind, rain and sleet, but I don't remember any snow! We did have track suits, but this was a long time before lycra and they were shapeless, sagging affairs. Oh the glamour.

mistlethrush · 06/12/2009 23:20

Unis - need a recommendation for a scooter - looking at the ones with 2 wheels at the front, but the ones suitable for his weight appear to be about £80 plus - are the just 2 wheel ones as good?

daisy99divine · 06/12/2009 23:36

we got a micro scooter 2 wheels front, one back, it's wonderful but only £40 I think?

amberlight · 07/12/2009 08:50

"Dear Bishops

If using the sauna, try to wipe the snow off your boots first, and don't keep setting light to the birch twigs as it causes all sorts of mayhem with the fire alarm systems.

And no hiding behind the door, leaping out and yelling "Ho Ho Ho" Have I got a surprise for you!" at the guests... or else."

Er, is that is?

I'm seeing a real one later today. I'll see if he agrees to the general principles/has me sacked for it.

Splendid choice of new accom. Very bijou and yet spacious. Warm, yet snowy.

We had to play hockey in the snow. It wasn't nice. Our games mistresses were cruel and heartless. But I did learn that it's very impolite to tell them this to their faces and that it lead to Consequences

CMOTdibbler · 07/12/2009 08:59

DS has a three wheeler scooter from Argos that was 30ish - it's v good, and much easier than the two wheeler sort

No tracksuits at my school. In the very coldest weather we could wear our jumpers over our aertex shirts, but your legs were exposed from navy gym knickers to your socks (the gym skirt added nothing to warmth)

RacingSnake · 07/12/2009 11:28

Didn't ever play lacrosse (private/state divide) and hated hockey. Was made goal keeper as I was rubbish at everything else. However, I have once scored a try at rugby. It was very recently. I was on a 'rugby and French' course and we were trying out some of the ideas. I was so useless that the opposition seem to have forgotten that I was there and I .... sprinted through and scored a try!!!! First and last ever, I feel.

Very grey and miserable this morning. Sheets of rain, Aged Parent more anxious and depressed than usual, WRiggle sobbing all the way to nursery 'I neeeeeeed Mummy.'

Rugby and French ? Was it to get rugby fans to learn some french ? Tell us more.

Weather foul here too - cats are all sulking around the place. Is it anything in particular troubling your AP, or general malaise of the season. Poor Wriggle

RacingSnake · 07/12/2009 14:42

It was to get PE teachers to include some French warm ups etc. Good idea, I think.

AP suffering from a lot of pain, as well as the malaise of the season and feeling obselete as technology passes her by.

Wriggle was actually much better when I went to pick her up - not playing, but sitting next to the teacher and watching everything. She is extra annoying now, though, to make up for what I put her through.

Poor wee souls. We played lacrosse with tracksuits and waterproofs and everything - but I loved it and have played in mud, snow and everything - was still playing until I found out I was up the duff

Racing, now, come along dear, I am agog - how did Something About Mary go - you can't make us lesson plan and then not tell more!!!

Am in quandry between 2 schools - would you go
(a) forward looking, plan for future but possibly a bit gizmo and flash (and expensive)

(b) traditional, tried and tested but possibly a bit dyed in the wool/ luddite/ stiff upper lip?

Both full of happy children and seemingly happy and dedicated staff. Staff in school (a) could be children of staff in school (b) and school (a) lovely head is leaving.....

teafortwo · 07/12/2009 17:55

Daisy...

I like the idea of school 2... It sounds dusty but warm and like it might smell of roast dinners and sponge cakes, do 'news', have a pond and organise educational trips to the woods. All of which is very good for child development!

... but maybe my imagination is running away with me a little bit!!!

MadBadandCoveredinTinsel · 07/12/2009 18:10

Racing - Commiserations for AP's feelings of gloom. What form is Wriggle's annoyingness taking? Has it abated by now?

Daisy - you were playing lacrosse until a few years ago? Wow!

As for the schools dilemma, let's cut to the chase. Are these state schools? How over-subscribed are they? I ask because, around here anyway, it doesn't seem too difficult to change independent schools mid-stream, but the most popular state schools have long waiting lists which mean that if one's original choice turns out to be a disaster it can take a long time to move. So I think you need to think about what your escape route would be. (Having moved MBB between schools I tend to think about this a lot and probably give it too much significance).

But, more than anything else, I think you need to base your decision on (first and foremost) what will suit DaisyBoy. The little boys around here who attend the prep school which sounds rather like your school B seem a bit, well, squashed. Not unhappy, just not giving free rein to their essential boy-ness. Which may or may not be a good thing.

As for age of staff. MBB's education has suffered in the past, I think, through having teachers who were very young and very inexperienced and just didn't have the skills of the trade, which you need if you are going to hack it in a London primary school. So I would be wary of any school which had a vast proportion of newly-qualified teachers (especially as that might tell you something about staff turnover). But younger staff can also be energetic and enthusiastic, so I wouldn't necessarily opt for a school with a middle-aged staff. I also wouldn't be too bothered about the headteacher leaving - a really good school won't be dependent on the personality of one individual (even an individual as elevated as the head teacher) and if it's a good school will attract another good person to be the new head.

So that probably hasn't helped much.

Who'd like a steaming mug of hot chocolate?

Catitainahatita · 07/12/2009 18:37

Ok, what´s with all the red? [puzzled emoticon]

Welcome gallusbesombaubles, your name is very good I hope you live up to it!

I've no real time to catch up beyond the new thread, But I hope all are well and thriving.I hope to be around soon.

mistlethrush · 07/12/2009 19:52

Daisy - for what its worth, mistlechick has needed experienced hands in charge to try to channel the enthusiasm in the right direction...

We had the option of a school with lots of plans - but, again, new head coming in.

We started out wanting ds to go to the really small school (just one class per year) - went off it though when I found out that 1/2 the class did music and 1/2 the class did computers - meaning only did music 1/2 the time.

That school ended up having a major siblings issue that meant that rather than being the top of the reserve list, we were pushed down to 7th or 8th - and they didn't even bother to contact me to explain before the 'interviews'. And I'm actually really glad that the school he has gone to has 3 groups at reception - its meant that there has been enough flexibility in the system to allow one boy to move forms - that boy is doing better and the whole class dynamics have improved in mistlechicks form - more importantly, mistlechick is no longer being led astray!!!

UniS · 07/12/2009 21:30

school with outdoors sound good for energetic child, one hope they actually USE that outdoor resource. I chose boys preschool largely on outdoor space and they do get the kids out when ever its not lashing it down. I'd like them to use it when it IS lashing down but not enough kids are sent with full waterproofs.

school choice is made for us, only one school in walking distance so he going there.

Scooter- never had a 3 wheeler so not sure, boy is using my cr*ppy rip off copy old 2 wheeler from China. Hes been OK on it for a long time, but his balance is good, still can't do teh brake confidently tho.
