Tea Room 17 - The Tropical Beach Hut

1000 replies

amberlight · 23/07/2010 14:41

Welcome to the 17th version of the Tea Room. We find ourselves on a tropical beach, with the tea room now in a beach hut on stilts, the waves lapping on the golden sands beneath. Palm trees surround us. Our virtual gardener/beach surfing dude/handyman, Mellors, is here to tend to your every need. He looks like the person of your dreams (male, female or otherwise ). There are of course holidaying Bishops and other leaders of faith, the Camels, the Bison, various guinea pigs, the tea room horses, a life-size cut out of George Clooney, the NMBs (please don't ask me to explain how Mohawk Babies joined us, and a wide variety of other virtual followers. We chat, we relax, we share how life is. All in need of friendship are most welcome. The kettle is on...and the distressed chintz sofa has of course made the journey over. Enjoy.

okish - it is very painful, esp the nerve pain from that damage. It'll be a long recovery apparently - will be in plaster for at least 8 weeks, then splinting etc. Will find out next week if I'll need more surgery (had 3 lots so far)

ASmallBunchOfFlowers · 26/08/2010 10:25

Yikes. Are you back at work or are you too immobile/zonked out on painkillers for that?

Help yourself from the breakfast buffet - today we have tropical mango smoothies as well as the coffee, hot chocolate, pastries and hot buttered toast.

CMOTdibbler · 26/08/2010 10:46

Too zonked - have done a bit of email, but have no concentration atm due to Tramadol. Don't like it, but needs must.

Fortunatly our cleaner has taken on the name tape sewing in, so DS will start school next week properly dressed. Its his last day at nursery tomorrow

MaryBS · 26/08/2010 11:12

Eek, CMOT! I missed that! Ouch!

Smoothie bar sounds good. I'm a bad mummy, completely lost it at my daughter, and made her cry buckets. Over a silly thing too.

AandO · 26/08/2010 11:54

Hi guys, I'm in my family home now, surrounded by boxes. Hope you are all well. xxx

mistlethrush · 26/08/2010 13:15

Oooh I'm so sorry CMot - sounds very, very OUCH.... I've had various horse escapades... like being bucked off and kicked on the head (thank you Lucy) at Riding School. And cantering Paddy around a field in a circle and he fell over - luckily we were going at a speed that he chucked me clear so didn't land on top of me - but I think I was exceptionally lucky not to have broken my collar bone that time. And I know I was in the lower 6th at the time as the following day I was leading the 2nd violins in orchestra - I hadn't told my mother how badly I'd fallen - during the day I was having to hold my jumper with my left hand to try to keep my arm still.... then for orchestra I had to put my violin under my chin with my RH, pick my LH up wtih my RH and bring it up to the violin and then inch it backwards to the scroll - didn't put my violin down for the whole rehearsal.... But never actually broke anything.

How is everything else fitting in - have you got enough help - is work being reasonable (they sometimes can be, but I have experience of them not)(ie insisting that I came back whilst still signed off otherwise they'd get someone in to do my job). Did ds see it all happening - if so, is he OK? Hope all necessary ops finished with....

This sort of thing makes me rather ultra cautious - I'd end up on morphine plus steriods to minimise the allergic reaction - don't fancy either.

Amber - how are you doing, can I pass a pot of tea down to the priest hole and would you like a chocolate brownie with vanila, pecan and maple syrup icecream?

ASmallBunchOfFlowers · 26/08/2010 23:23

Hmm. It's quiet here tonight. I shall ask Mellors to set the glitter ball spinning and then he and I will throw some shapes to which I brought back from my holiday.

thumbwitch · 27/08/2010 12:14

Another dullsville day weatherwise here in SW London(ish) - oh what shall we do today? Might go to the cemetery if the rain holds off; otherwise not quite sure. WEekend is mostly planned out apart from BH Monday - you'd think I'd have enough people to see to fill every day but some seem rather less bothered than I perhaps anticipated. This has left me slightly deflated but I guess I haven't been away long enough yet; or perhaps too long?

Well, we shall see.

CMOTD - am so :( for you that your wrist is still not sorted - I do hope it sets ok and you don't need any further surgery. Hope you're catching up on your reading - I've just pre-ordered the latest TP from Amazon, it should arrive just before we leave - good opportunity to re-read them all if you're bored! Wink

A&O - hurrah! Enjoy the unpacking Grin

mistlethrush · 27/08/2010 12:25

Was that unseen accademicals TW? I've just finished that one... Grin Or is there a newer 'new' one (we wait now for the paperbacks)

thumbwitch · 27/08/2010 13:36

There is indeed a newer new one - it's called "I shall wear midnight" and it's a TIffany Aching one (so technically more for the children but that never stops me!)

I've also just found a trilogy called The Magic Thief, by Sarah Prineas - again a younger readership but not bad. Just finished number one (Aussie library book) and ordered no.2 (paperback) but will have to wait for no.3 to be issued in paperback.

THe only hardbacks I buy are TP (and stuff that never goes to paperback of course).

amberlight · 27/08/2010 17:42

Hello all. Missed you. Needed the break desperately. Smile

Will catch up soon. Where's the tea? Ah, there it is...splendid...

Hello all.
Welcome back Amber and AandO.

The news on my front goes from depressing to downright scary. Last night the electricity went off at midnight, followed by two rather large bangs. It came back on at 6am. Depressing because it's hot and we thus had no air-conditioning.
Scary because when I dropped my two at nursery (about 3 streets from our house) this morning, the street in front of it was cordoned off and full of soldiers and federal officers. Turns our there had been two car bombs (the bangs, obviously). Drug gang warfare is becoming too nasty by half, is all I can say.

So I dithered about leaving K and G obviously. In the end, I decided that they would be no safer at home, given the proximity. At least the nursery has high walls and a locked gate to the street (which our house does not). Hmm. Hmm. I have no idea what to do really.

Just to be clear, I am not looking for sympathy here, things are as they are. I just needed to talk about it really.

thumbwitch · 27/08/2010 21:04

Gah! Catita, that is scary. It is, definitely. I take it that moving is not an option for you? I'd be desperate to get out of there, I must say but I am a terrible pessimist.
The electricity thing sucks too - was that related to the car bombs? I know you weren't asking for sympathy but hey, have an unMNly (((hug))) and the priest hole for a while.

Amber - lovely to see you back again, glad you had a good time :)

ASmallBunchOfFlowers · 27/08/2010 22:33

Would anyone care for a Friday night Bolly?

Catita - I think it was that incident that made the Today programme today (or was it yesterday, I'm never fully compos mentis at that time of the morning). I don't know what to say here, but will FB you if I can think how to express my rather jumbled thoughts.

Amber - Welcome back!

AandO · 27/08/2010 22:41

Oh Catita, that sounds very scary!!

I am lying in bed instead of packing Grin

Catitainahatita · 27/08/2010 23:37

I assume the electricity going was to do with the bombs. It does go alot here; but the fact that the bombs and the cut coincided makes me think that it was related.
We're all safely home just now. Hopefully there will be no more unwanted bangs in the night for the foreseeeable future.

amberlight · 28/08/2010 09:53

Ye heavens Catita.... Shock Blimey, goodness me!!

Large hugs/cups of something?

OP posts:
ASmallBunchOfFlowers · 28/08/2010 11:23

I'll have a lemon tea if you're offering, Amber.

Catitainahatita · 28/08/2010 16:31

I'll have a large cup of tea laced with whisky just as my grandad used to make, please Amber.

Thumb: we are looking at moving, given the situation (plus work is not a great place here either), it's just a logistical nightmare and we are not sure we can afford to move financially, especially as it would probably mean only one of us working for a time. As you can imagine the housing market here is not bright and breezy. We are unlikely to be able to sell, and thus to move we could end up having to pay the morgage plus rent on a place in a new town Sad.

It's a bit of a nightmare really, we only decided to stay and thus buy a house in 2007. Before that we were keeping out options open. There was no real violence in those days. It's all just kicked off since January. Two drug cartels are fighting for the control of the border with the US and surrounding area. The army is fighting them. All sides are barbarous in the extreme.
Just the day before yesterday 72 Central Americans migrants on their way to Texas werre "executed" in a town further north in Tamaulipas. What they had done to annoy the gangs is unknown. It is probable they just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time, poor things.

MaryBS · 29/08/2010 07:59

Catita, how horrible for you :(.

amberlight · 29/08/2010 16:57

Much about the situation in the newspapers here as well, now.

Still very quiet but it's just because of life here. Now it looks very much as if ds may have a fairly serious hormone production problem...tests soon...could mean another operation and if it doesn't lead to a lot of improvement, hell for his A level year and his rugby. We do not need this. He especially doesn't need it.

Who's for a cuppa?
