Nursery requesting to see my DC passport

The other day went I collected my DC from nursery I was asked to bring my DC's passport. We just started the 15hrs free allowance, but I do not think this is something to do with that.

Why do they require to see this? Anyone knows if this is related to the new government thing which I saw in the papers and Schools week

Did you not ask the nursery why?

Just ask them. Not every child has a passport anyway, so it's a silly thing to ask for.

I don't know but IME for nursery and school I had to provide birth certificate and proof of address, I don't think I was asked for passports but had them if needed.

I had to show dds birth cert when she started at nursery in sept. It's proof theyre entitled to the free hours.

As others said. They just need proof of date of birth.

Tbh I was in a hurry so I didn't think much at the time. It's probably better to ask for a birth certificate and explain why. I email them a copy of the birth certificate and see what they answer. I'm not very happy to send a copy of my DC passport.

Why aren't you happy to send them a copy of the passport? Surely if you trust them to look after your child you'd trust them to have a copy of the passport.

My child didn't even have a passport until she was 6.

But I thought they had to ask everyone regardless of ethnic origin torn sure they had the right to study (independent schools) or the right to a state education.

I'm sure I had to take school a copy of either dd's birth certificate or passport before she started (actually, I think they asked for birth certificate & I suggested passport as she's not UK born). She's in yr 10 now, so that was a long time ago!

I showed DS's passport in lieu of a birth certificate at his school nursery. Mainly because I couldn't find the thing. They ask for birth certificate and proof of address. Maybe she'd just had a bunch of parents like me...

It's just for proof of age for the free hours

In order to claim the free hours the nursery need to see proof of date of birth
We ask for the full birth certificate as it also gives info on parental responsibility
You can refuse but the nursery have every right to refuse to claim he free hours and pass on the full cost to you

We recently got this in an email from school.

Information for Department of Education

We need extra information to give to the Department of Education for the Autumn Census this term.
The information asked for is:

Country of Birth of pupil
Nationality of Pupil

We have to enter this information for ALL pupils on roll in the school on October 6th.

We didn't need to show proof though.

I don't mind showing it, but I do mind having a photocopy that can be misplaced. We had an issue with a brand new passport lost in the way home from the passport office, so I do worry about this things.

Also after seeing that article regarding schools demanding passports to that tick the boxes outside "British white" put me on guard, I do not want my child to be profiled. Call me paranoid...

As there was no explanation of what was it for? It got me worry. I have show the birth certificate and they are happy now.

They shouldn't need to keep a copy

I had to show my children's birth certificates to show they were off the right age

There was a tick box on the free hours form to say they had seen proof of dob. Nursery kept a copy as it was their policy but preschool didn't.

We didn't fill any form regarding the 15 hrs, they were doing all the paperwork.

And I'm assuming their paperwork had a check box for them to check to say they had seen it.

In Scotland and you can use either a BC or passport to claim free hours. You also need proof of address.

The numbers (passport or BC) go into a database (maintained by a private company) that follows the child through school up to age 18 -no idea what happens to the data then.
I think it is flawed as obviously passports expire and you get a new number - better still when one parent used a BC for one setting and a passport for another it threw the system into confusion!
Our Nursery funding application form (supplied by the council) is now 7 pages long and asks for lots of stuff like ethnicity etc - I think it is intrusive.
Also it is like eligibility to work - when it first became the employers responsibility we were told we had to ask everyone (even if we had known then since birth etc) for proof and to keep a record -otherwise it could be seen as discriminatory.

You will have to take it again when your DC starts school.

Hmm, I've just been asked for this info again, despite showing them all when my dc started school. They are in y 5, 4, 2. I've recently shown it already for my reception aged child. I had to fill in a form asking what country they were born in and their nationality. This has all been done before.

Also, I've recently applied for DLA for my dc. I've been asked to provide my passport details (I have dual citizenship, but I was not born in the uk and have an obvious accent. All info has already been provided on the original form, not quite sure why they have asked again? It's annoying as they have lost the copy I had certified and I need to do it all again.
