DO BRITISH MUMS CARE ABOUT CHEMICALS IN CHILDREN'S CLOTHING?

FashionAndMumsResearch · 07/04/2026 20:02

Along with the rise of clean eating, beauty, and homeware, fashion may be emerging as the next safety concern.

I'm a Master's student at the London College of Fashion, researching non-toxic childrenswear!

I'd be massively grateful if any British mothers of children aged 3-12 could take 5 minutes to complete the questionnaire. I have to hit 200 responses, which is challenging as I don't personally know many mothers. If you feel like it and have the time, please feel free to share it with any friends or group chats. https://arts.eu.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_cLOsTjZpcDVgKWy

Thank you so much and have a wonderful week Xx

Got to the gender question. Rolled my eyes and closed the survey I'm afraid.

I didnt see a gender question Confused

frostytimes · 08/04/2026 00:14

It’s at the very end. I was debating whether to submit as I think more attention needs to be brought to this topic and the risk of these chemicals but also annoyed at the silly categories

TakeTheCuntingQuichePatricia · 08/04/2026 00:23

Hmmm. Well I did the survey. It submitted after the question that wasn't actually a question (choose one to preserve answers)
Just looked again and there were more questions after that. So @FashionAndMumsResearch might need to check the whole thing really as I seemingly submitted half a survey.

Is this the final version of the survey? Lots of the questions seem to be asking the same thing with just slightly different wording, which is a bit confusing. And a lot about 'consuming' clothing which was unusual wording and made it sound as though ingestion of chemicals was the problem you're trying to solve.

And the gender question doesn't cover everyone - either you're assuming that everyone has a gender identity, or you're only seeking responses from those who do, in which case it should be at the beginning to weed out those who don't and avoid wasting time.

After all that though, I'm still not sure what the non toxic clothing is! Clothing made from natural fibres? Clothing made without using chemicals in the dyes? Clothing made from synthetic materials that haven't been treated with chemicals? I am interested, but confused.

PS I hope you don't mind this kind of feedback - I used to design surveys and I know how hard it can be to boil everything down to multiple choice answers! 🤯

HI all, unfortunately, I do have to ask the question about gender as part of research ethics. I'm sorry really sorry if it has caused any offence.

Can’t you ask about sex? Why gender?

Hi thank you so much for the feedback! Yes, unfortunately with quantitative research I have to take questions from previous surveys, and often they ask very similar things, which I know can be quite tedious! The questions are often quite similar because they test a specific construct; if they were very different, they would likely be testing something unrelated to that construct.

With the gender question, I do have to ask it as part of research ethics but I put it at the end because I assumed people would not be too happy with it. It's not so much relevant to my research if people identify as a mother that is enough. I agree it's silly I have to ask it.

Also yes, some people will leave this survey feeling confused, as it is not intended to inform. Some people are shown things which are more informative, some are not, so it tests the responses to the differing levels of information!

No worries at all, this is very insightful and thank you for taking part <3

Hiya! This is an attention check question, it's to make sure people are reading the questions, so that I can remove any who don't pass it and have a set of good quality data.

Hiya, unfortunately because sex is biological, ethically some people might find it quite invasive, so I am not allowed to ask that for my study. But thank you for the question x

Hiya thank you so much for looking past it, I really appreciate it. I have to ask it as part of research ethics, unfortunately. I did put it at the end because I had a feeling it wouldn't have entirely positive reactions.

I didn't get the gender question, thank goodness.

Why do you have to ask it, out of interest? Who's making you ask that nonsensical and irrelevant question?

Good luck with your research, hope you get some good responses (to the non-gender woo questions!) 😊

Hiya thank you so much! 😊It's a standard question that all research has to ask I am looking specifically at mothers, but I am not allowed to assume that means everyone identifies with being female. I wasn't keen on asking it because it's controversial.

I spoke to my supervisor, and she said I was not allowed to assume that, just because I am just testing mothers, all would identify with being female. I'm sorry if I have caused any discomfort, just following her guidance and she is one of the people who marks my work x

I'm literally conducting research right now so I do understand wanting a large enough sample size.

But shouting isn't the way (unless you're testing salience).
