DO BRITISH MUMS CARE ABOUT CHEMICALS IN CHILDREN'S CLOTHING?

FashionAndMumsResearch · 07/04/2026 20:02

Along with the rise of clean eating, beauty, and homeware, fashion may be emerging as the next safety concern.

I'm a Master's student at the London College of Fashion, researching non-toxic childrenswear!

I'd be massively grateful if any British mothers of children aged 3-12 could take 5 minutes to complete the questionnaire. I have to hit 200 responses, which is challenging as I don't personally know many mothers. If you feel like it and have the time, please feel free to share it with any friends or group chats. https://arts.eu.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_cLOsTjZpcDVgKWy

Thank you so much and have a wonderful week Xx

Trigger warning: Non-toxic clothing refers to apparel that is manufactured without the use of harsh chemicals that can have adverse impacts on human health. You may be exposed to messages that include information about the potential negative effects of chemicals in clothing on children’s health. If you feel that reading about health risks to children may cause you distress, you may wish to decline participation or stop the survey at any point.’

Did your rather silly supervisor make you include that too? I’d have thought any parents distressed at potential health risks to their children would want to do the survey to check their own children weren’t in danger.

I also wanted to mention that unless you paid the £30 to MNHQ your thread is at risk of disappearing before you have enough answers, so hopefully that’s done.

Yes she did. Some people completing the survey may see more information than others. Thank you so much for helping to keep the thread alive I appreciate it massively xx

I can explain that for you. A lot of MNers reject the concept of gender on priniciple - we know we’re women / females because those are the words for our sex, not because we identify as a gender. So when there isn’t an option for ‘Gender is sexist bollocks & I don’t believe in it’ all you can do is go for the Other / Prefer not to say option, assuming you’ve got one.

Hi thanks for the insight! I do have an "other" option.

Survey completed. Off to do some research on this subject as I am rather ignorant.
Good luck op x

Thank you so much for your time! ☺️ I would love hear any thoughts you have on the research you do. Xx

I appreciated the trigger warning. As someone who has received counselling for perinatal anxiety relating to toxic stuff affecting my children, I have to be in the right frame of mind to be confronted with yet another source of anxiety. There’s also been a lot of stuff in the media about various toxic stuff, like asbestos in the play sand, pesticides, PFAS etc etc.

Thanks for sharing this feedback! It's important for me and lovely to hear that you found it helpful x

Did the BIG FAT CAPITAL LETTERS in the title not give away what the survey is about? Are you not triggered by reading the trigger warning that there are "negative effects of chemicals in clothing on children’s health"?

Bloody hell. Why on earth are you arguing on a thread about a chemicals in clothes survey? You probably need a new hobby away from the internet.

Got to the gender question. Rolled my eyes and closed the survey I'm afraid.

So childish, getting all the way through it then not submitting it cos of this. This person was just wording it in the most inclusive way that she thought would keep everyone happy (which we all know is impossible). The same way you might see it worded on a council/tv subscription whatever form. She’s just copying the wording from what she sees on other forms! Don’t blame her, blame society. It’s got nothing to do with the questions she’s asking. So petty

keepswimming38 · 09/04/2026 08:37

A poorly constructed survey!

TalulahJP · 09/04/2026 08:44

im not a parent of under 12s or id have filled this in.

i dont think people know that some chemicals like Teflon are considered toxic. I thought the best kids trousers were protected by teflon and would last longer, but apparently it’s one of many chemicals that arent what we thought - and i cook on pans wirh that in them.

im about to watch “in our blood the forever chemicals scandal” on stv (or itv). scary stuff. like spent nuclear fuel once it’s made it can be unmade.

all the best with your course OP.

This is so uncalled for. The OP is a student. How many masters degrees do you have?

Yes and she is trying to meet the expectations of her academic supervisor who will be mainly responsible for marking it. It would be crazy to ignore any advice from the supervisor, even if it is bonkers! The end goal is that OP passes her Masters.

WappityWabbit · 09/04/2026 09:12

Gender is made up nonsense whereas biological Sex can only be one or the other, so I’m surprised that anyone conducting academic research would want to include such a pointless option that doesn’t assist the research in any way. 🤔

TheTulipsAreOut · 09/04/2026 10:34

FashionAndMumsResearch · 08/04/2026 13:02

Sorry haha I had to make it stand out somehow my Masters is hinged on this! Just trying to get a good grade I hope you understand x

I understand you wanted to stand out, but shouting isn't the way to do it. It really comes over as obnoxious. Presumably not the vibe you were aiming for.

putting a question at the end that you know will get peoples backs up isn't the way to go about it, unless you are ok with abandoned surveys.

It doesn't come across as obnoxious - don't be silly.

If you read the thread, the OP explains why she had to include the ridiculous question about gender. She can make a stand, refuse, and fail - or she can grit her teeth, roll her eyes inwardly, and do what her supervisor requires her to do. I know what I'd do after paying £££££ for a Masters.

Trigger warnings are the same brand of nonsense as gender wang. People who can't go about their daily lives without notice that their feelings might get hurt.

Edited

Yes. I read ALL her posts.

She said she left the gender question until the end as she knew people wouldn't be to happy about it. That's not a good approach to creating a survey, unless you want abandoned surveys. I never said to make a stand, so don't know why you're going on about that??

I'm not the only one who finds shouting thread titles obnoxious, if you don't, that's great. But bugger off telling others not to be silly.

neverwakeasleepingbaby · 09/04/2026 11:02

I think some people required a trigger warning for the gender question!

Hiya, some people who fill out the survey may have to read more detailed explanations of specific chemicals and health conditions.

You bugger off.

She had to include the gender question, and she explained very clearly why she left it to tge end. People who know it's a ridiculous question and decide not to continue will abandon the survey regardless of where the question is placed.

I’m sorry about the responses. Good luck with your survey. I filled it in. I wanted to add I avoid non iron school uniform as it has formaldehyde in, and try and only buy fabrics that don’t, but it is hard to get full school uniform that complies, that children will wear and that isn’t full of chemicals.

The only issue I had was the word “consume” as my kids do many things with clothes but they don’t eat them!

No worries at all thank you for sharing your thoughts! I've swapped to stainless steel pans now, although it takes a bit of practice!
Wow I didn't know ITV had made a documentary too will definitely be giving that a watch.
Thank you so much! Have a wonderful day x
