DO BRITISH MUMS CARE ABOUT CHEMICALS IN CHILDREN'S CLOTHING?

FashionAndMumsResearch · 07/04/2026 20:02

Along with the rise of clean eating, beauty, and homeware, fashion may be emerging as the next safety concern.

I'm a Master's student at the London College of Fashion, researching non-toxic childrenswear!

I'd be massively grateful if any British mothers of children aged 3-12 could take 5 minutes to complete the questionnaire. I have to hit 200 responses, which is challenging as I don't personally know many mothers. If you feel like it and have the time, please feel free to share it with any friends or group chats. https://arts.eu.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_cLOsTjZpcDVgKWy

Thank you so much and have a wonderful week Xx

oh there we go. Ready for the pile on.

Very interesting topic and not enough people know about the chemicals. I don’t have young children but I do have a sensitivity to formaldehyde and have to wash everything before I wear it. I can’t even go into a primark (or similar shops that put stuff on clothes to make them look better quality than they are) for long as my breathing and eyes are affected and I feel sick. I had patch tests in my 20s as I had unexplained rashes. I’m 60 now and still have to be careful . It’s affected me my whole life so far

Hi I'm really interested to here about this view point please may someone explain it for me. I would like to hear all sides of this argument because as a student at an arts uni, you don't often come across this debate. I am neutral in this and genuinely interested.

No idea what the PP thinks but some people think gender stereotypes are rather damaging and asking people what gender they identify as encourages the idea of gender stereotyping. I know some non-binary people who feel this way, and it is the reason why they don't want to be identified with either gender.

Other people don't like answering questions on ethnicity, sex, gender etc. because they think it could lead to discrimination. It is well known that a lot of people lie on these type of questions if they think an honest answer will disadvantage them in some way. This is irrelevant to your survey though as there is no advantage or disadvantage to be had.

Good luck with your survey!

How many more responses do you need now?

Hiya, I have actually exceeded the amount I need! :) I am going to keep it open, which gives me the option of deleting data from this date if it comes back suspicious.

I’ve also reported the posts naming the OP. Yes it’s available in her survey, but it’s not on to take it out of her control and full name her on this site. Completely unacceptable and rabid. How dangerous and unempowering to name a young woman being attacked on the internet, in the name of feminism. Stripping her of control and aiming to humiliate her. Irony?

Edited

Really instructive isn't it.

What nasty, nasty pieces of work. When someone tells you who they are, listen.

That’s great! I’m going to exit here now, but I will say to be careful with some of the people you engage with on here and I’d be worried if my young student daughter was having her information thrown around on here. It can be vitriolic.

YerMotherWasAHamster · 10/04/2026 15:23

OP- if you curernly have no idea about the issue, havent heard much about it and know nothing then i suggest you spend some time reading the feminism board on here and click on the links, and read tra spaces to get views from all sides and angles and make sure you research facts and statistics in order to have fully informed opinions on the issue, whatever those opinions may be.

Just read it all yourself. Don't read someone's interpretation of what someone else told them someone else had said and form your opinions from that.

Do your own research. Place value on facts.

Yep, agree. Absolutely not on. Think what you like about the OP's daft question and subsequent actions on Reddit, but naming is terrible. Have also reported.

AStonedRose · 10/04/2026 15:24

Good luck with the research btw OP. I've done some work in this area and it's really important. I'll complete the survey once my working day is done.

FWR post stuff from Reddit on MN quite often. What's the difference?

The difference is that researchers place value on ‘clean’ data, not influenced by other factors. Starting a Reddit thread about MN while still keeping the link and thead on MN? As I said on the other thread, my academic advisor would skin me alive. Talking shit about your participants in another forum is not ethical. And not very academically rigorous.

Absolutely this, though do bear in mind that the anti-trans boards on here have gone way beyond reasoned debate, and are often simply detatched from the facts. Lots of committed GC people have abandoned them because they are too extreme. There are also far-right elements at work.

Of course, there are some loons on the other side too. It's this polarisation that's made the whole issue so toxic.

Actually, she posted her full name in the comments. Maybe I shouldn’t have used it back at her, but I only read her comments here not the survey.

There isn't an "anti-trans" board on here.

There is Feminism and Women's Rights, which is pro-women.

HI all, unfortunately, I do have to ask the question about gender as part of research ethics. I'm sorry really sorry if it has caused any offence.

I chose prefer not to say. It said on the first page the questionnaire was for mothers? Why do you need to know if I'm a male mother or female mother? It's nonsensical.

Currentquandry · 10/04/2026 15:34

FashionAndMumsResearch · 10/04/2026 15:12

Absolutely everyone has a right to an opinion, and I genuinely don't know how I feel about it yet. Thank you for providing some insight, and I support open discussion. I am trying to learn from mistakes and make sure I conduct myself in a mindful manner in future research.

Hi OP, I really hope you get what you need from the survey. It’s an interesting and important area of research so it’s great that you are doing it. Best of luck and I hope you pass your Masters with flying colours!

As for the gender question, I really recommend you visit the Feminism: Sex and Gender board on here. The threads below might help you to get an idea of why many MNers feel passionately about this (myself included!) It is a passion for women’s rights and protecting women and girls that spurs us on, not a hostility to trans people.

What a good idea.

There was this really good thread the other day where posters trawled the Guardian's 'Blind Dates' series looking for participants who looked like they may be trans. I'm sure the OP will get a lot from that.

What about the threads where you've talked about not employing trans people, or refusing to let a property to them, because you think they may be troublemakers? Really educational.

FashionAndMumsResearch · 08/04/2026 13:13

Hiya, unfortunately because sex is biological, ethically some people might find it quite invasive, so I am not allowed to ask that for my study. But thank you for the question x

If you cannot see that this is abject nonsense, you are better off leaving academia, along with every single one of your gender identity ideology addled peers. You are there to think for yourself, not to parrot fashionable and entirely wrong-headed dogma.

Briefly: sex is a scientific, empirically observable fact. We are all either male or female. There is nothing ethically compromising about that. Gender identity, by contrast, is trendy, make up nonsense that is unfalsifiable and therefore not at all relevant to any form of scientific enquiry.
