DO BRITISH MUMS CARE ABOUT CHEMICALS IN CHILDREN'S CLOTHING?

FashionAndMumsResearch · 07/04/2026 20:02

Along with the rise of clean eating, beauty, and homeware, fashion may be emerging as the next safety concern.

I'm a Master's student at the London College of Fashion, researching non-toxic childrenswear!

I'd be massively grateful if any British mothers of children aged 3-12 could take 5 minutes to complete the questionnaire. I have to hit 200 responses, which is challenging as I don't personally know many mothers. If you feel like it and have the time, please feel free to share it with any friends or group chats. https://arts.eu.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_cLOsTjZpcDVgKWy

Thank you so much and have a wonderful week Xx

Surely it’s irrelevant whether they “identify as being female” ? As mothers, are female. Anyone who doesn’t want to be called a mother won’t be filling in a survey for mothers. If your survey is only for mothers, and doesn’t include fathers, then it’s a female only survey by definition so the gender nonsense is unnecessary.
Anyway, yes I do care about toxic clothing, and school uniform was the hardest for me to get round, all that polyester with toxic stain resistant coatings. My children are now young adults though so too old for me to do the survey.

Definitely, in retrospect, I regret asking the question. I agree it is potentially irrelevant. Thank you for the insight, I find uniform really interesting and almost made this research on it! Decided not to because I knew I was going to be contacting schools to distribute, and thought they may not have wanted to spread that information, haha.

Oops, you're not familiar with the university ecosystem at all are you? They are absolutely rabid with this nonsense at every level. A real shame.

Sadly too familiar with it - 2 of mine have been through university, and I support students in my role in the NHS ('nuff said). I was trying to understand if it was driven by the OP or from her supervisor, or both, and she clarified that.

Not ok. Posting on reddit to complain about us.

Oh my goodness! Just to invite criticism and spite towards anyone gender critical?

A bit snide to expect people to contribute to your research and then moan on Reddit. As a researcher you should perhaps have looked more at the forum you’ve chosen to question rather than going off to find out more via the famously reliable forum of Reddit. Really not ok.

Yeah, snide indeed. Not able to challenge people on here? Scurrying to Reddit for affirmation?

bridgetreilly · 10/04/2026 15:03

I find it bizarre that a question about observable, biological fact is considered ethically intrusive, while one about internal, psychologically disordered thinking is completely fine.

I promise this was never my intention. I am interested in the differing view points and feel that I don't know enough.

Indeed. You dont have to explicitly moan on reddit, just innocently plop it down and let reddit do what reddit does.

No doubt a few new names will now pop up on this thread. Coincidentally.

I personally didn't give a flying fuck about the gender question. Its well known how things are in universities at the moment, but plopping it onto reddit, knowing exactly what will happen, while doing the innocent me thing? Not ok.

Hi I am sorry you feel that way. I don't want to challenge anyone. I feel neutral about it because I don't feel I know enough about both arguments. I am interested to learn.

I'm genuinely trying to give you the benefit of the doubt, but your post on Reddit, and the responses, leads me to think otherwise.
People have a right to an opinion on the whole "gender identity" thing. If you don't like it, either ignore it, or take it on board.

LavenderFieldds · 10/04/2026 15:08

Good luck OP!

Ok. Interested to learn is good. Listen to people's opinions on this.
It's a huge issue, so I'm surprised you're unaware. However, you are now.

SirChenjins · 10/04/2026 15:11

Oh no - that's not on at all OP. You've had a number of supportive posts wishing you good luck on here and answering your questions in good faith , as well as others (inc me) who wanted to understand why you asked question and then came to understand you had been forced to do so and so defended your position. There really was no need to take to Reddit.

What, like a beacon won’t have been sent out on the FWR board trying to recruit people to pile on in here?

Absolutely everyone has a right to an opinion, and I genuinely don't know how I feel about it yet. Thank you for providing some insight, and I support open discussion. I am trying to learn from mistakes and make sure I conduct myself in a mindful manner in future research.

Hiya! This is an attention check question, it's to make sure people are reading the questions, so that I can remove any who don't pass it and have a set of good quality data.

Bloody cheek, and staggeringly condescending. When one is conducting a survey, one does not choose to ignore some of the results. Rookie error.

Besides, why are you just asking mums? 0/10 for that.

FWR post stuff from Reddit on MN quite often. What's the difference?

I’ve also reported the posts naming the OP. Yes it’s available in her survey, but it’s not on to take it out of her control and full name her on this site. Completely unacceptable and rabid. How dangerous and unempowering to name a young woman being attacked on the internet, in the name of feminism. Stripping her of control and aiming to humiliate her. Irony?

I think it's important to understand that Mumsnet gets vilified because it is predominantly a space for women. You can't imagine how many misogynists loathe that women have spaces to support each other
Is it perfect? No. Do some threads get a bit bonkers? Yes.
However, because it's female it gets mocked - as you saw from many of your Reddit responses. Prosecco/Babycham mockery, the usual.
