After yesterday’s horrific attack in Southport, the usual Islamophobia and racism has jumped up as per usual. Whilst there is no indication the suspect was Muslim and the police have confirmed it’s not terror related, the speculation and accusations on social media were rife, with many still claiming it’s why Islam should be banned in the UK and we should all be sent back.

And that is tough, because the sadness over what happened is magnified by fears for our safety and our future. So just thinking of you all and wanted to say hope you’re ok.

But I wanted to say I stand with you sisters. I'm so sorry.

I read about the terrible and shocking stabbings which has tragically led to the deaths of the three innocent children. So incredibly sad

A police van has also been set on fire! It's madness

No evidence beyond social media rumours. A name was circulating, which the police have said is incorrect. But that's enough to spark what looks like a riot. So worried for our sisters and brothers there.

Not Muslim but would also like to offer solidarity.

Thank you. What happened was simply awful. I'm so sad for the innocent lives lost and forever changed by that senseless attack. And to see what's happening on the streets just now is terrible too. I'm thinking of you all - stay safe.

So the protests and riots are because the perpetrator might be muslim?
I feel so sorry for the families of the victims, imagine the grief they must be going through and then to have other loonies hijack your pain for their own agendas

The mainstream media hasn't suggested the suspect is Muslim to my knowledge but I was on Twitter and there were claims it was someone with a very Muslim name.

There were also claims it was an asylum seeker who came "on a boat" I believe this has been stated as incorrect by police and he was born in Cardiff. The strength of hate in these posts shocked me.

It's sad that those poor children dead, families in agony and so many just and traumatised and so much energy is being wasted forwarding on falsehoods and hate.

I finally got a chance to read the news and what happened was absolutely devastating. The hatred (and almost riot) at the masjid is shocking. They need someone to calm things down.

Absolutely senseless behaviour tonight. Its been widely reported the attacker has born in Cardiff, but the thugs rioting tonight obviously don't care for the facts, or for the community who are already traumatised by yesterdays events and praying for the safe recovery of the other victims still in hospital.

My heart always sinks when I hear that any perpetrator of a violent crime is "not white", knowing the effects this will have on thousands of innocent people and the rise in racist attacks.

Again, not a Muslim, a white British atheist. I stand with you and the people of Southport. Sending love and kindness your way <3
