After yesterday’s horrific attack in Southport, the usual Islamophobia and racism has jumped up as per usual. Whilst there is no indication the suspect was Muslim and the police have confirmed it’s not terror related, the speculation and accusations on social media were rife, with many still claiming it’s why Islam should be banned in the UK and we should all be sent back.

And that is tough, because the sadness over what happened is magnified by fears for our safety and our future. So just thinking of you all and wanted to say hope you’re ok.

Another non-Muslim posting in solidarity.
Thinking of everyone in Southport and especially the families of those gorgeous girls 💔

maldivemoment · 30/07/2024 23:27

Sister, I am with you.

(For context; practicing RC)

JoyApple · 31/07/2024 09:30

I was so so upset and sad to hear about this. When I saw that police said it wasn't terrorism related, I thought phew. The entire UK Muslim population won't be blamed for this or have to pay the price for this heinous crime.

Sadly the rampant never ending islamophobia that very few people are calling out in different factions of our society, had led to today where the Muslim community are being blamed for and attacked for a crime that has nothing to do with them. The far right rhetoric has gone too far again. The media and some politicians need to be held responsible.

BuddhaAtSea · 31/07/2024 09:33

As a woman and a mother, I stand with you ❤️

Apileofballyhoo · 31/07/2024 09:54

Not in the UK or Muslim either. I'm so sorry this is happening and thinking of you all.

Insidelaurashead · 31/07/2024 09:57

Not Muslim. Absolutely know that your religion is one of peace, kindness and respect, and that when a Muslim does awful things it's because they're scum, not because of their religion. Also know that this specific case wasn't even a Muslim-not that it would change my opinion if he was.

I read yesterday that some lovely Muslim people wanted to lay flowers for the girls, but were too scared to come and do that. I am so, so sorry that any of you are having to feel scared, upset, and I'm sure a ton of other emotions, due to some far right scumbags trying to upset, hurt and intimidate you. They do not stand for me

As a middle aged white atheist I send good hopes and wishes. Intolerance will not prevail and in this I stand with you.

Scirocco · 31/07/2024 10:52

Thank you to everyone who has posted with support - this means so much to so many of us.

spiderdave · 31/07/2024 10:55

Another atheist standing with all of you. X

idontwannabeanythingotherthanwhativebeentrynabe · 31/07/2024 10:59

Also not a Muslim and just showing support.

So very sorry for everything that is happening (and has been happening)

ErrolTheDragon · 31/07/2024 11:05

Another atheist sickened by this.

I don't know why what the EDL thugs did last night isn't officially considered terrorism - they certainly create terror.

CurbsideProphet · 31/07/2024 12:33

I don't know if you would have seen, but the Southport community have all rallied around to clear / repair the damage done to the Mosque last night. Local companies are offering to replace windows for free. Everyone is helping each other.

I might be speaking completely out of turn, I just wanted you to know.

stormy4319trevor · 31/07/2024 12:44

Support and solidarity with you all. Sickening news altogether. Prayers for Southport, the families and children, and the Muslim community.

Yes, lots of people including kids out with brooms

This is the reaction of normal, decent people whatever their background.

It's my hometown. I don't live far away now and all my friends and family still live there. I hope everyone will know that those who travelled in from places like Wigan to do that don't represent the people of Southport.

As if they haven’t all had enough to deal with, now they’re having to clean up after these people.

The idiots that did this won’t even have the common sense to feel ashamed of themselves either.

noblegiraffe · 31/07/2024 15:39

I’m horrified by what has been happening and the lies that have been told on social media specifically to whip up violence and anti-Muslim hatred, using the deaths of those poor girls for their own ends. I was also disgusted by the chants at the Tommy Robinson march at the weekend. I don’t know whether my algorithms have changed to be particularly racist recently, but it feels like social media is just plastered with Islamophobia at the moment. Maybe it has just become even more visible to me or maybe it is ramping up. Either way, I am really sorry this is happening, it must be very frightening. I hope things calm down soon. I’m glad the people of Southport are showing that those thugs don’t speak for them.

yes saw that in the news. hopefully the community will grow closer as opposed to what the thugs intended. that's the only way to beat that kind of ideology.

This Northern Ireland poster stands with you my Muslim sisters. I know too well the fear of being targeted for your religion or ethnicity. I'm sorry you are going through this. Thanks

coastergirl · 31/07/2024 16:38

I'm an atheist and Southport has been my home for the past fifteen years. The events of this week have truly shocked our town. I was at the vigil last night and so many emergency vehicles flew past. Horrified watching the scenes on TV when I got home. Please know that these yobs are not speaking for Southport. The people and businesses offering help and support today, that's the Southport I know. I also stand with you. ❤️

TeaMistress · 31/07/2024 16:45

I dont wish to intrude on your space but I wanted to offer you solidarity and support. I'm a Christian. I stand with you and everyone else who is shocked and appalled at the violence we are seeing. My thoughts are with our Muslim communities and citizens and with the grieving community in Southport.

LilyJessie · 31/07/2024 16:53

I am also not Muslim, but I see you and I stand by you and together we can grieve those poor girls deaths.

Riots in Hartlepool 30 minutes away from me, lying in bed terrified all because my skin is brown.
Never felt anxiety as I do right now, there’s only me and my daughters in this house.
Couldnt afford to carry on living down south after divorce so stuck in an area where I’m terrified.
