After yesterday’s horrific attack in Southport, the usual Islamophobia and racism has jumped up as per usual. Whilst there is no indication the suspect was Muslim and the police have confirmed it’s not terror related, the speculation and accusations on social media were rife, with many still claiming it’s why Islam should be banned in the UK and we should all be sent back.

And that is tough, because the sadness over what happened is magnified by fears for our safety and our future. So just thinking of you all and wanted to say hope you’re ok.

I'm a Christian not Muslim so I hope you don't mind me posting. Like most people I am really upset by the awfulness of the attacks on little children but I am also so saddened that this has been hijacked to stir up extreme hatred against Muslims.

I’m not Muslim, I am brown skinned as my mother is an Indian sikh, my children are mixed race, I’m very worried at how it is out there.
I was born in England in the early 70s so have seen racism but never thought it would be this bad and scary.
I live in the NE and there are very few Asians in this town so I’m ultra paranoid.
Why do I have to worry when every time a person of colour does something I will be made to feel guilty by colour? I’ve never lived anywhere but England and don’t cause trouble or offend anyone.
Of course my thoughts are with those children and families that goes without saying.

I came to say the same thing.

Many of us stand shoulder to shoulder with each other - regardless of race or religion - in solidarity to grieve and mourn such incomprehensible loss.

I am so very sorry that these disgusting people are hijacking this awful tragedy to promote hatred towards your community. The scenes in Southport tonight have been utterly shameful.

This violence had been orchestrated by the far right stirring up tensions.

It was reported that the Southport attacker was born in Cardiff with Rwandan heritage. Rwanda is a Christian majority country, with a very small Muslim population.

thank you to everyone offering msgs of support. I am part of a muslim spiritual community and our community centre where we do retreats and hold classes for children has previously been attacked by EDL. today we are on high alert.
