After yesterday’s horrific attack in Southport, the usual Islamophobia and racism has jumped up as per usual. Whilst there is no indication the suspect was Muslim and the police have confirmed it’s not terror related, the speculation and accusations on social media were rife, with many still claiming it’s why Islam should be banned in the UK and we should all be sent back.

And that is tough, because the sadness over what happened is magnified by fears for our safety and our future. So just thinking of you all and wanted to say hope you’re ok.

Hi everyone, I’m not Muslim so I’m sorry for commenting in your safe space, but I just want to say I have you all in my thoughts.

Tonight’s riots ( and the last couple) are absolutely shocking and the fact that mosques are having to have armed police protection is truly heartbreaking, I hope you and your families are all doing ok and not getting any abuse from your wider communities 💔

This means a lot to me, thank you.

Unfortunately, yesterday, whilst passing through the city centre of a place known to have a high muslim population, I was called a "f*ing Muslim". I was very shocked because I didn't expect it in that area. I was walking with my baby, minding my own business and man behind me was repeating this.

Not that it should be of any relevance but I found it rather ironic that this man was a black man, and so obviously must know what it's like to be subjected to abuse for the colour of one's skin. I noticed that he had bought something from a shop owned by a Muslim as well (whilst expressing islamaphobic views)... This man whilst probably used to being judged for the colour of his skin (like me) cannot see the bigotry involved in judging someone based on religion (and probably sex too, since I was wearing a headscarf)... Sad that society can be so divided and that some lack empathy.

I’m Jewish not Muslim, but wanted to stand beside you at this truly horrible time. My heart breaks for what you are going through. I can empathise with feeling hated and unwanted in your own country. This is not ok. Sending strength and support.

Thank you, I am deeply touched by some of the comments that I'm reading on this thread by non-Muslims, tonight. I guess there is hope after all... It means a huge deal and is almost making me quite emotional because watching the news, seeing various posts here on MN over the past couple of days has been upsetting. Mostly because I now have kids of my own and don't know how to explain that some people won't like them because of the colour of their skin and/or their religion. They're just kids and they are willing to be friends with anyone and everyone.

LunaTheCat · 03/08/2024 04:03

I am not Muslim but I am standing with you. 💐

I know it mustn’t seem like it at the moment, but the majority of people don’t think like those vile thugs. They don’t represent us.

Most of us are raising our children to be kind and tolerant, and to embrace diversity and all of the wonderful cultures that we share this country with so that your children don’t have to live in fear of hatred.

I am just so sorry and sad for what I’m seeing on the news, what you experienced yesterday is disgusting and must have been terrifying for you Flowers

You got abused by a man yesterday whilst out alone with your baby? I’m truly sorry you experienced that in your community, I honestly have no words, I hope that this hasn’t scared you into staying at home, I don’t know if there was CCTV in the area that you were in but I’d definitely be reporting it as a hate/race crime for your own safety and that of your baby.

You are honestly in my thoughts ( and all of you on this thread) these people are just thugs and just know that their actions have no baring on our country as a whole, we are all British and our diversity stems hundreds if not thousands of years but some of our population deserve to rot in jail

Lopine · 03/08/2024 08:47

I am not a Muslim but wishing everyone who is solidarity and support. I am horrified by the turn of events.

Lwrenn · 03/08/2024 09:00

If any of you ladies are Merseyside ways and feel uncomfortable going places in this climate send me a message, I'll come with you the shops etc until it you feel safer. I'm sorry I even have to offer this. But if I can do anything and you're local, let me know x

That's such a kind offer - thank you on behalf of anyone in the area.

Parkingt111 · 03/08/2024 11:53

For those in Manchester I have seen messages not to go into the city centre today.
Stay safe x

Parkingt111 · 03/08/2024 11:58

There's 22 far-right protests planned just for today across the country.
Stay vigilant

Hope you’re all doing ok

My other half (who looks like a thug, big, skin head, beard and tattoos) is going to Liverpool counter protests later on after his shift at work. I've just said he needs to not wear his tracksuit incase the Tommy Robinson dicks try to claim them as one of their own.

I'm so sorry my friends. Love to all and stay safe.

The Liverpool imam has woken up today being shared around my friends what's app groups as a thirst trap as he's a very handsome guy, I'm not sure if any of you have seen the images from last night when the Abdullah Qulliam Mosque served burgers and chips to both sides of the protesters, powerful stuff. He hugged a rioter and invited them for talks.

Parkingt111 · 03/08/2024 13:03

@Lwrenn I did a quick Google and found the image, it is indeed powerful and he's a braver person than myself! Going over to hug and meet those who are violently protesting against him.

And thank you to your partner, I do hope he stays safe.

Love to everyone on this thread. We are a community and nobody can take that from us. Those mindless thugs do not speak for decent people.

Thanks for that. Bought tears to my eyes.
I'll be honest, I'm so tired of it all. I hardly go out much anymore, seriously worried for my children. Can't do much except remind them to be aware and be careful. I have family who volunteer or work as police, paramedics, scouts and they have had plenty of racists incidents over the years but now I just wish we could leave move etc but there isn't anywhere to go, I was born here as were many of my family. Only thing that keeps me going and getting out of bed is my faith in God. He is the best of planners and if this is the best place for me for now then I try to make the best of it. I go out of my way to connect with all the local people and it is just so tiring sometimes.
Hope everyone is safe out there.

Auvergne63 · 03/08/2024 16:46

I am not a Muslim or British but just wanted to say that I am appalled by what it is happening and offer solidarity to you all.

Scirocco · 03/08/2024 18:57

We had a handful of people at our masjid, and about twice the number of people there to stand between them and the masjid. After about an hour, everyone was invited in for tea and cake.

And people say we aren't British enough. What's more British than everyone resolving their differences over a nice cup of tea?

Hettar · 03/08/2024 19:11

I wanted to thank everyone that has commented on this thread. It's been wonderful to see such support of the Muslim community.

These protests are scary but please do remember that this is a very small minority. The fast majority of people in this country hold no ill will to Muslims.

Any man that abuses a women in the street is a coward. As we know he wouldn't say anything to a man. Women are easy targets for these people.

I'm sorry to hear the abuse and fear in the Jewish community as well. Especially if any this is because of the muslim community. I'm sorry your feeling afaird in your own homes. Please know that many muslims love you and want nothing but good things for you.

I dont comment often but wanted to share my feelings.

TakeMe2Insanity · 03/08/2024 20:14

That sounds so positive @Scirocco

I hate calling them protests. It feels like a mobilisation without rational thought, which is also contradictory.

BelleHathor · 03/08/2024 23:36

Sending love and Solidarity to all of you. I'm not Muslim but did not think that we as mothers would be having to have "the talk" with our children in 2024.
I'm heartened at all of the communities coming together to say "not in our name". Xxx

p.s. the good people on social media are also coming together to identify the perpetrators and a lot them will not have jobs to go back to.

Nazzywish · 03/08/2024 23:49

How are we doing mamas? I'm tired of this shit. British ,born here, give everything to here, yet always looking over my shoulder for the wrong reasons. Just when you settle there'll be another event where your looking over your shoulder again. Why can't these fuckers just fuck off and get castrated so they don't pro create mini versions of themselves whilst they're at it.

I've also been waiting to hear our pm come out to denounce the islamaphobia ( using that word specifically) but he hasn't has he. All in a roundabout way about making 'communities feed safe' why can't he say we stand with the muslim community being targeted and we won't stand for this islamaphobia in Britain. Why?

Londonismyjam · 04/08/2024 01:00

I’m with you my sisters. I’m a white granny, old enough to have been on Rock against Racism and Anti Nazi league marches in the late seventies. I didn’t think we’d be here again but sadly here we are. I’m still prepared to get on that coach and protest agains mindless racists. I’m 72.

Parkingt111 · 04/08/2024 08:56

@Nazzywish so sorry you feel like that. Somebody threw eggs on my front door the other night, I put it down to naughty teenagers but now I'm feeling paranoid it's something else as it was only my house that was targeted in the cul de sac where I live, and we are the only visible ethnic minority and Muslim family here.

My DC sometimes play out at the front with the other children from the cul de sac, but with everything going on we have had to explain to them why it's no longer safe for them and they can only play in the garden from now on.

Scirocco · 04/08/2024 09:03

@Parkingt111 that's awful! Did you log it with 101 - there might be a pattern of houses in your area that could shed light on the perpetrators? It's horrible that this is happening.
