Lily Allen - she really is an unpleasant woman isn't she?

And all her music sounds the same, talky shite.

Sorry if you like her but DH was just reading her opinions on various people and she is quite ugly in her opinions. Add this to the other things i have read or seen her say in interviews.

not big not clever
no you ain't a big fella...

MagNacarta · 06/07/2009 21:31

Well, going back to the class issue I have to confess that I used to work in the same company as her mother. I didn't know her well, but I do remember that when Harry Enfield became part of their lives the story in the office was that he offered to pay for her to go to an independant school. Alison said that she couldn't accept the offer as there was no way she could afford to pay the fees should anything happen to end their relationship and he said that he'd cover the fees regardless. I was young and childfree at the time, but admired her mother for that and also Harry Enfield.

So, she could be working class and go to a private school.

cornsilk · 06/07/2009 21:46

Harry Enfield???

Habbibu · 06/07/2009 22:11

Yeah, but there's a whole range of clever in between Lily Allen and Leonard Cohen, and I just don't get the idea that she's clever. The lyric that Heated (?) posted earlier just left me cold - you're really mean blah blah. Clever doesn't need to be angst-ridden - you can write shit angsty lyrics too (Snow patrol, anyone). Alongside the example of Tom Lehrer, Victoria Wood was/is a clever and witty female songwriter sans angst...

And clever in the "rock pool" really really isn't the same as clever on MN! Relatively clever doesn't cut it on here so much, surely - this place is packed to the gills with clever witty women.

AitchTwoOh · 06/07/2009 22:13

i think she'll become one of us, habs, in the end. they all do. [ominous]

one of us, one of us, one of us.

MrsSpringsteen · 06/07/2009 22:15

need to read article to comment

Lily copies Kate Nash ..badly

nepotism begins chez Allen

PavlovtheForgetfulCat · 06/07/2009 22:17

MrsSpringsteen - i heart your husband so I will agree with anything you say. As long as you get me a signed photo to lust after ok?

Pavlov - I have an old pair of his jeans if you fancy them? Sorry wont have time to wash them so they may be a bit sweaty.....

Habbibu · 06/07/2009 22:19

Nah, Aitch. She couldn't keep up. Not witty or clever enough. You'd have a moany thread in Flouncer's Corner in the blink of an eye. And can you imagine the aforesaid lyric's reception in Relationships? "FGS, stop fucking moaning about how mean he is. You sound 5 years old. Get a grip and dump him and stop whining"...

noddyholder · 06/07/2009 22:20

I really like her just for what she is but to compare her to Difford and Tilbrook is a huge insult!

Tinker · 06/07/2009 22:20

Nodding at Hab here and am appalled that Lily Allen could be mentioned in the same discussion as Leonard Cohen

PavlovtheForgetfulCat · 06/07/2009 22:21

I only want them if they are sweaty . Do they have his ass print in them still? He has a mighty fine butt.

MrsSpringsteen · 06/07/2009 22:22

read her wiki entry they are quite scathing

Habbibu · 06/07/2009 22:23

Have just done the briefest of analyses on a lyrics site and can categorically state that she falls into the "swallowed a rhyming dictionary" group of "songwriters".

meh.

Hassled · 06/07/2009 22:23

You're right that there is a whole range of clever between Allen and Cohen, but don't forget that below Allen there is a whole range of gob-smacking stupidity. Tis all relative.

And yes, she is clever in her ability to see and sum up the zeitgeist (I hate the word, but it's all I can think of) - to talk about shiteness in bed, or the fame culture, or wanting to smile when the guy who dumped her is in a bad way; stuff that people have experienced and can relate to - and to do it with a good, catchy melody. She'd do well on MN, I think.

AitchTwoOh · 06/07/2009 22:23

ohfgs she was compared UNFAVOURABLY with leonard cohen. how silly.

hab, i disagree with you, i do think she's bright. i couldn't have kept up with this place when i was her age.

and this whole thread is premised on a piece of magazine furniture where quotes are pulled together by the office boy to make the celebrity look vacuous, self-obsessed and delusional, it was never an article. and the quotes are FUNNY.

Tinker · 06/07/2009 22:24

Um, I know aitch. Was a mock face...

MrsSpringsteen · 06/07/2009 22:26

read article now

24 ? more like 12

AitchTwoOh · 06/07/2009 22:27

well you were nodding at hab who is a well-known serious soul with a gavel and your post wasn't actually funny, so how were we to know? [mock]

Habbibu · 06/07/2009 22:28

Well, I have never read an interview with her, as she just isn't sufficiently interesting to me, and haven't looked at the links on this thread, so was just going on her lyrics. Which are just - mundane. It's rhymey, rhymey, nondescript bleh, imo.

AitchTwoOh · 06/07/2009 22:28

ye gods, it's not an article, it's a clips search.

Tinker · 06/07/2009 22:30

Er, ok...

Habbibu · 06/07/2009 22:30

well known serious soul with a gavel? I'm clever and witty, damn your eyes.

PavlovtheForgetfulCat · 06/07/2009 22:31

Aitch - you are not Lily Allen herself are you?
