Love Actually - Hasn’t dated so well…

Following on from an earlier thread regarding Four Weddings, I watched Love Actually a few years back and can remember a few things that made me think it’s not dated so well!
Fat shaming, misogyny, homophobic but the worse one for me personally was Colin Firth’s character using an offensive ableist slur…
AIBU and overthinking it - it’s what it is yadda yadda even though it makes me cringe and is slightly triggering ( child has a disability)

its on over Christmas and it’s annoying me that it’ll be lumped in as a great Christmas film but I find it really outdated and offensive!

I really hate that kind of stuff: it’s nasty and outdated!!
Someone give my head a wobble but be kind if you do….

Given that it's really not an old film, honestly, would anybody say, "oh, it's just of its time" if he'd used a racist slur? I very much doubt it. I do find it massively offensive.

Yeah they would.

Movingonup313 · 13/12/2025 06:43

Id describe it as a very british christmas movie. It covered a lot and appealed to many. It had a wide ranging cast which also appealed to many. It was a bit like panto, but for the screen. It raised many topics that crop up at christmas - not all good. It poised many wwyd momemts. The word rwferred to by op was not acceptable at the time so an odd choice - maybe to show the word was around and to provoke conversation. I enjoyed it in 2003 (watched it in the cinema in nz) and still enjoy it now.

Missey85 · 13/12/2025 07:06

Yay it's the time of year 😂😂 I love the movie if you don't like it switch it off! 💕💕 Go sit in the corner and moan about it to yourself 😂 the rest of us will just enjoy the film

Barleycat · 13/12/2025 07:13

Watched it last night with my 18 year old son. We've seen it a few times and all love it. We discussed and agreed how most of the men are arseholes, MM is in no way fat and that AL is stalky and creepy and is not romantic. Don't see any issue with the US scenes, its just taking the piss out of awkward mens fantasies and thats ok. Obviously AR character is a ridiculous old man and its a horrible betrayal but no one can say that the office worker isn't out to cause trouble. Bill Nighy is fabulous 'ant or dec' and I think its a funny entertaining film. Though that word used by CF did shock me as it would have done when the film came out .

Whytodayofalldays · 13/12/2025 07:23

Only on Mn would people admit to feeling some kind of moral superiority because they don’t like a film. Madness!!

bleakmidwintering · 13/12/2025 07:47

I’m afraid anything by that director just makes me cringe. It probably reflects the fact he’s a bit of a knob. I just switch onto a different film. It doesn’t need another thread.

Moral superiority?
Show one poster that claims a moral highground or makes any reference to people who enjoy the film as being morally inferior?

What I find fascinating on this thread is how personally people have taken criticism of a film. The only personal comments (or moral judgements) on this thread are directed at posters who are critical of the film.

BeardofHagrid · 13/12/2025 07:54

I’m watching all the Bridget Jones films at the moment. Lots of the issues mentioned in the OP also present. I can’t get over what a dreadful actor Colin Firth is! He’s had a face like a smacked arse in every scene and speaks like he has a stick somewhere he shouldn’t. Why does Bridget even like him?! On Tattle they said Firth plays Firth in every film 😆

Nitgel · 13/12/2025 07:56

It was a shite film then and a shite film.now. colin firth was embarassed to be in it i expect.

I’d only heard that about Hugh Grant playing Hugh Grant the posh English man in every film.
Funny they should be cast together.

isthesolution · 12/12/2025 15:39

I’ve hated it since the day it was released. We’ve got a guy being unfaithful to his wife, one telling their best friend’s teenage looking wife they love her, a child whose mother has died being driven to the airport and encouraged to break the law, a prime minister being completely inappropriate with his staff, urghhh. Just urghhhh!

Me too. I have never understood why it is so popular.

Hugh Grant can actually act if you see him in anything where he’s not completely typecast. I find Colin Firth as Colin Firth marginally less irritating, but I’m not sure he can act at all.

WeirdyBeardyMarrowBabyLady · 13/12/2025 08:12

I had never watched it so resolved to do so a few years ago. Just beforehand I read the Jezebel article which someone has already posted upthread. It’s very funny but totally put me off watching. And I’ve still not seen it.

Nitgel · 13/12/2025 08:19

Colon firth has won an oscar. Please dont judge his acting from the shite films he did.

The one on the previous page who says that women only enjoys watching LA these days because it reminds them of their long gone glory days when they used to be fit and popular.

Not only is that poster making morally superior comments but speaking as someone who still enjoys LA but views 2003 as one of the worst years of their life due to suffering a catastrophic health crisis then, stupidly sweeping untrue ones too.

Edited

I had not seen that particular post and agree it is unreasonably nasty.
But by far and away, the majority of posters critical of the film have limited their comments to the film, not judging those who like it. The majority of the personal criticism such as "madness" etc have been directed at the op (who merely expressed her opinion) and others who expressed a negative view of the film.

Chocolatecoveredshitpig · 13/12/2025 10:10

This was on the other night so my 16 year old DD was half heartedly watching it. I had said a couple of times to bear in mind it was over 20 years old but she was still pretty horrified by how creepy all the men were. When I told her that Keira Knightley was only 17 years old at the time of filming I thought her head was going to explode. “That’s disgusting“ she said, followed by this face 🤢🤢🤢

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 13/12/2025 11:20

No-one bothered about the Colin Firth ( Jamie ) characters flu-filled girlfriend shagging her boyfriends BROTHER in their bed while she has shoved him out to the wedding ?

No of course not .
If it was a bloke and his girlfriends sister it would be Shock
And I'll add - she is in a relationship , we don't know about brother of Jamie .

ApplebyArrows · 13/12/2025 11:49

I'm getting a sense here that a lot of people think a film is beyond the pale if the protagonists aren't all paragons of virtue. With the growing prevalence of this kind of sanctimonious moralising over the last couple of decades, it's no surprise that nobody's made a quality romantic comedy in years.

Atorwave · 13/12/2025 14:04

Ljm90 · 13/12/2025 01:07

Yes it was a shit film. Ignore the posters who are saying "yes but I bloody love it!"- these women were fit and popular in the early 2000s, now in 2025 far, far from it and still love it because it reminds them of their long-gone glory days

Oh how I would love to know your back story @Ljm90 !

It's a terrible film, and I agree with you. Misogynist, ableist, and just a shit film as well. That scene where all the attractive American models fall over that disgusting idiot guy ffs 🙄

Couldn’t agree more.

Just change channel. I can't watch any but the most recent James Bond films as I find the earlier ones incredibly misogynistic. But that's just me. There are squillions of other programmes available and a raft of streaming channels.

ThePoliteLion · 13/12/2025 18:59

It’s a shit film. Always has been, always will be
